["I can't sleep!": insomnia as the most common non-organic sleep disorder].

Insomnia, especially chronic insomnia, is a common condition that is also listed as a separate clinical entity in the new International Classification of Diseases (ICD). The diagnosis of chronic insomnia is based on the patient's own and third-party medical history, questionnaires on sleep and quality of life, a sleep-wake log, and, if necessary, a measurement of sleep quality. In addition, other factors that disrupt sleep as well as other sleep disorders must be ruled out, if necessary in a sleep laboratory. Cognitive behavioral therapy should be used as a preventive measure and as the first

Daytime Performance in Insomnia Patients.

Patients suffering from Nonorganic Insomnia (NI) are burdened by significant subjective daytime impairments which contribute to the reduction of quality of life for the patients and lead to greater healthcare utilization and increased indirect costs. Besides being central to diagnosis, operationalized criteria for daytime symptoms are lacking and data remain heterogeneous, especially regarding objectively measurable deficits. This study examines daytime performance in 329 NI patients through neuropsychological testing as well as self-report questionnaires, and correlates the results with polys

The current article reviews adjustments that were made to the classification of sleep disorders in the 11th revision of the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD-11) in comparison to the 10th revision of the coding system (ICD-10). Impact of lipodystrophy on health-related quality of life: the QuaLip study.

BACKGROUND: Lipodystrophy is a rare disease characterized by loss of adipose tissue. Natural history studies have demonstrated significant burden of disease; however, there is limited data on the impact of lipodystrophy on quality of life (QoL) and psychoemotional well-being. The QuaLip study is a prospective observational real-world study that aims to determine the impact of lipodystrophy on QoL and psychoemotional well-being and explore subjective burden of the disease. Sixty-seven adult patients and eight pediatric patients with lipodystrophy were included. Patients were followed up for 24

IgA vasculitis with nephritis: an overview of the pathogenesis and clinical characteristics.

BACKGROUND: Vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE), particularly Enterococcus faecium and E. faecalis, are responsible for various human infections and represent a significant global public health concern in both nosocomial and community settings. To facilitate early detection of these pathogens, we developed a rapid method for detecting E. faecium, E. faecalis, and vancomycin resistance genes (vanA and vanB) in a single reaction using multiplex recombinase polymerase amplification (M-RPA) combined with a chromatographic printed-array strip (C-PAS). METHODS: A total of 106 samples, including

Eyelid Closure Behavior of Patients with Idiopathic and Nonorganic Hypersomnia, Narcolepsy-Cataplexy, and Healthy Controls in the Maintenance of Wakefulness Test.

PURPOSE: Differential diagnosis of central disorders of hypersomnolence remains challenging, particularly between idiopathic (IH) and nonorganic hypersomnia (NOH). We hypothesized that eyelid closure behavior in the maintenance of wakefulness test (MWT) could be a valuable biomarker. PATIENTS AND METHODS: MWT recordings of patients with IH, NOH, narcolepsy-cataplexy (NC), and healthy sleep-deprived controls (H) were retrospectively analyzed (15 individuals per group). For each MWT trial, visual scoring of face videography for partial (50-80%) and full eyelid closure (≥80%) was performed from

Insomnia disorders are associated with increased cardiometabolic disturbances and death risks from cardiovascular diseases in psychiatric patients treated with weight-gain-inducing psychotropic drugs: results from a Swiss cohort.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Insomnia disorders as well as cardiometabolic disorders are highly prevalent in the psychiatric population compared to the general population. We aimed to investigate their association and evolution over time in a Swiss psychiatric cohort. METHODS: Data for 2861 patients (8954 observations) were obtained from two prospective cohorts (PsyMetab and PsyClin) with metabolic parameters monitored routinely during psychotropic treatment. Insomnia disorders were based on the presence of ICD-10 "F51.0" diagnosis (non-organic insomnia), the prescription of sedatives before bedtime or

Association between sleep disorders and osteoarthritis: A case-control study of 351,932 adults in the UK.

This study aimed to analyse the association between sleep disorders and osteoarthritis in adults in the UK. This case-control study included patients aged ≥ 18 years who were diagnosed with osteoarthritis for the first time in one of 256 general practices in the UK between 1997 and 2016 (index date). Patients without osteoarthritis were matched (1:1) to those with osteoarthritis by sex, age, index year, general practice, observation time prior to index date (in years), obesity, injuries, and other types of arthritis. For patients without osteoarthritis, the index date was a randomly selected v

Diagnostic Distribution of Psychiatric Disorders among Korean Young Adults.

OBJECTIVES: The prevalence of psychiatric disorders among young adults is different from that among younger or older age groups because of biological and environmental changes. The purpose of this study was to analyze the diagnostic distribution of psychiatric disorders in 19-30-year-old Koreans based on their age and gender using data from the Korean National Health Insurance Service (NHIS). METHODS: From the 2011 medical claims sample data of NHIS of 1,375,842 people, we extracted the data of 221,038 people aged 19-30 years, including 106,232 (48.1%) men and 114,806 (51.9%) women. [Insomnia and Hypersomnia among Children and Adolescents with Psychiatric Disorders].

Insomnia and Hypersomnia among Children and Adolescents with Psychiatric Disorders The common symptom of sleep disorders is non-restorative sleep, which results in daytime sleepiness. Therefore in clinical practice simultaneous complaints of "not enough" and "too much" sleep are very frequent. For the investigation and treatment of organic sleep disorders, available instruments, guidelines and specialised institutions (sleep centres or sleep laboratories) are more advanced than for non-organic sleep disorders. Especially in the child and adolescent psychiatric and psychotherapeutic field this

Identifying Cases of Sleep Disorders through International Classification of Diseases (ICD) Codes in Administrative Data.

OBJECTIVES: Prevalence, and associated morbidity and mortality of chronic sleep disorders have been limited to small cohort studies, however, administrative data may be used to provide representation of larger population estimates of disease. With no guidelines to inform the identification of cases of sleep disorders in administrative data, the objective of this study was to develop and validate a set of ICD-codes used to define sleep disorders including narcolepsy, insomnia, and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in administrative data. METHODS: A cohort of adult patients, with medical records re

[Narcolepsy and Other 'Central Disorders of Hypersomnolence'].

Narcolepsy and Other 'Central Disorders of Hypersomnolence' Abstract. 'Excessive daytime sleepiness', 'hypersomnia' in the sense of prolonged sleep need, 'tiredness' or 'fatigue' are frequent complaints in primary care, requiring a careful separation in view of a correct diagnostic. After exclusion of various internistic and neurologic causes by clinical and laboratory investigations and after exclusion of sleep apnoea syndrome or other causes of disturbed sleep by polysomnography, the ambiguous group of 'Central Disorders of Hypersomnolence' remains, including narcolepsy with and without cata
