Reductions in PTSD symptom clusters among perinatal and postnatal survivors of intimate partner violence participating in the Heartbeats program.

BACKGROUND: Intimate partner violence (IPV) remains a leading cause of injury among women, especially during pregnancy and the postpartum period. Experiencing IPV increases the risk of mental health disorders, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). PTSD during the perinatal period is associated with poorer maternal mental health and adverse early child outcomes. Heartbeats (HB) is a hospital-based, community-linked violence intervention program designed to reduce morbidity and mortality among perinatal and postnatal survivors of IPV. HB provides crisis intervention, intensive case ma

Postpartum anemia and maternal wellbeing: A cohort analysis of the WOMAN-2 trial.

OBJECTIVE: We examined the association between postpartum anemia and maternal wellbeing in women who gave birth with anemia. METHODS: We conducted a cohort analysis using secondary data from the WOMAN-2 trial. Between August 2019 and September 2023, women with moderate or severe anemia who were giving birth vaginally were recruited from hospitals in Nigeria, Pakistan, Tanzania, and Zambia. Our exposure was postpartum anemia (hemoglobin concentration <70, 70-99, or ≥100 g/L: severe, mild/moderate, and no postpartum anemia, respectively). Our primary outcome was physical capacity (6-min walk te

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Anxiety, and Depression in Patients after Undergoing Cesarean Hysterectomy for Placenta Accreta Spectrum Disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Medically complicated pregnancies and deliveries can lead to adverse mental health outcomes, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, few studies have examined mental health outcomes after surgery for placenta accreta spectrum (PAS). Our aim was to identify prevalence of PTSD, anxiety, and depression in patients who underwent hysterectomy for PAS. We sought to understand whether more complex or emergent surgery was associated with a higher prevalence of PTSD and whether physical symptoms such as pelvic pain were correlated with patients' mental health outcomes. Phubbing in pregnancy as a predictor of postpartum depressive symptoms: preliminary results.

Partner behavior toward pregnant women plays a significant role in maternal mental health. One of the common behaviors that negatively affects the quality of communication is phubbing. Phubbing is defined as ignoring a partner during face to face interaction in favor of a mobile phone. The present study examined the association between partner phubbing during pregnancy and postpartum depression. Thirty expectant couples were recruited from a gynecological outpatient clinic in Italy and assessed longitudinally during the first trimester, third trimester, and within three months postpartum. Prenatal cannabis use disorder and postpartum psychiatric emergency department visits: A retrospective cohort study of trends and associations in California, 2016-2021.

PURPOSE: Cannabis is the most-used substance during pregnancy and has known associations with psychiatric disorders (e.g., psychosis, depression). No prospective studies, however, have investigated associations between prenatal cannabis use disorder (CUD) and psychiatric outcomes in perinatal populations. METHODS: Annual cohorts of women with a live infant delivery in California from 2016 to 2021 were constructed using statewide linked hospital and emergency department (ED) discharge data. We examined temporal trends in prenatal CUD prevalence and compared risk of postpartum psychiatric ED vi

Childbirth-related posttraumatic stress disorder and postpartum depression following cesarean delivery.

Maternal mental health disorders are fairly common during the perinatal period, predominantly mood- and trauma-related disorders, first episodes or relapses. Untreated, these mental health conditions can have a significant impact on the health of the mother, her child, and family functioning. These disorders remain underdiagnosed during the postpartum period. Obstetric care providers must understand the stakes involved and recognize the need to assess mothers' emotional well-being in the postpartum period-an essential opportunity for early detection and intervention for maternal mental health

Sleep and symptoms of depression and anxiety in mothers and fathers of infants: A longitudinal perspective.

OBJECTIVES: This longitudinal study investigated bidirectional links between objective and self-reported sleep and symptoms of depression and anxiety in both parents from pregnancy to 12 months postpartum. Using Random Intercept Cross-Lagged Panel Models (RI-CLPM), we examined whether sleep disturbances predict later depressive and anxiety symptoms and vice versa. METHODS: A total of 232 couples were recruited during pregnancy. Data were collected in the third trimester and at 4, 8, and 12 months postpartum. Sleep was assessed over seven nights using actigraphy and diaries. Parents completed

Access and barriers to treatment and counseling for postpartum women with and without symptoms of (CB-)PTSD within the cross-sectional study INVITE.

BACKGROUND: Although childbirth is frequently described as a positive experience, the transition to parenthood can be challenging and many postpartum women suffer from mental health problems. Nevertheless, the utilization of treatment and counseling services remains low. To improve this, it is necessary to examine the likelihood of and barriers to help-seeking among postpartum women. There is a paucity of research on postpartum posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), that addresses these issues, especially when considering both types of postpartum PTSD, namely childbirth-related PTSD (CB-PTSD) a

Trajectories of perinatal sleep quality from early pregnancy to six weeks postpartum and their risk factors: A multicenter longitudinal study in China.

BACKGROUND: Poor sleep quality during pregnancy is common and linked to adverse maternal and fetal outcomes. This study examined different sleep trajectories during pregnancy and risk factors associated with sleep quality. METHOD: Data came from a prospective cohort study of 1210 Chinese pregnant women who were within 13 weeks of gestation. Participants completed surveys at seven time points: five during pregnancy (gestational week 10-13 (T1), week 15-18 (T2), week 23-25 (T3), week 30-32 (T4) and week 36-37 (T5)) and two postpartum (7 days (T6) and 6 weeks (T7)). Antenatal anxiety and postpartum depressive symptoms in pregnancies complicated by placenta previa and placenta accreta spectrum.

OBJECTIVE: Placenta previa (PP) and placenta accreta spectrum (PAS) are high-risk obstetric conditions associated with significant maternal morbidity. While their obstetric consequences are well established, less is known about their impact on maternal mental health, particularly regarding the relationship between prenatal anxiety and postpartum depressive symptoms. METHODS: This cross-sectional comparative study was conducted at a tertiary referral center between September 2025 and January 2026. A total of 127 pregnant women were included, comprising 42 women diagnosed with PP with or withou

Identifying postpartum depression subtypes using natural language processing and clinical notes.

BACKGROUND: Postpartum depression (PPD) remains vastly underdiagnosed, and its clinical heterogeneity is not well understood. Diagnosis codes in electronic health records (EHRs) alone may not identify all PPD cases, highlighting a need for novel detection approaches. OBJECTIVE: To develop a transformer-based natural language processing (NLP) method to identify patients with PPD from clinical notes in EHRs and to examine demographic and clinical heterogeneity among identified cases. METHODS: Clinical notes from 64 426 patients who gave birth between 2010 and 2023 at a major US academic medica

Postpartum retention in opioid agonist treatment for opioid dependence: A population-based cohort study.

PURPOSE: Opioid agonist treatment (OAT) is the first-line treatment for opioid dependence during pregnancy and recommended for at least one year postpartum or until a strong maternal-infant bond and stable family environment is established. Evidence on postpartum OAT retention is limited. We examined retention rates and associated maternal characteristics. METHODS: We linked OAT prescription authority to perinatal, mortality, and other data sources. We identified all opioid-dependent women who gave birth in New South Wales, Australia (1 January 2004-31 March 2020) while receiving OAT. We defi

Longitudinal mother-rated screening of male partners' depressive symptoms using the Edinburgh postnatal depression scale during the perinatal period.

This study examined the validity of a mother-rated partner version of the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS-MRP) for screening perinatal depressive symptoms in male partners and the factors associated with proxy-rating accuracy. A longitudinal survey was conducted with 201 pregnant women (i.e., mothers) and their male partners recruited from three facilities during pregnancy and at 3-6 months postpartum. Mothers evaluated their partners' depressive symptoms using the EPDS-MRP. Mothers and partners completed the Beck Depression Inventory-Second Edition (BDI-II), partners completed the

Postpartum Psychosis: could genetic vulnerability to insomnia or short sleep duration be protective?

Postpartum Psychosis (PP) is a severe and understudied perinatal mental illness which disproportionately affects women with bipolar disorder (BD). A relationship between sleep disturbance and PP is often assumed, but is poorly understood. From a cohort of 2099 individuals with BD, 343 parous women were identified and screened for perinatal psychiatric complications. We compared 117 women who developed PP with 226 who did not. Polygenic Risk Scores (PRS) for BD, schizophrenia, insomnia, short sleep, long sleep, sleep efficiency and sleep duration were computed using PRS-CS. Logistic regression

Adverse pregnancy outcomes as predictors of postpartum psychiatric illness: a retrospective cohort study.

PURPOSE: Severe maternal morbidity (SMM as defined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) as well as other adverse pregnancy outcomes (APOs) may confer differential risk for postpartum psychiatric illness (PPI). PPI is often underrecognized, and it can have lasting and harmful effects on both the mother’s and the infant’s well-being. The purpose of this cross-sectional study is to explore whether specific pregnancy complications act as potential predictors for PPI, and how this differs across important social determinants of health (e.g. race/ethnicity). METHODS: Participant data w
