BACKGROUND: Strong evidence suggests physical activity (PA) can ameliorate postpartum depression (PPD) symptoms; however, many postpartum individuals do not meet PA guidelines. Electronic health (eHealth) interventions are a promising approach to address common barriers to PA during postpartum.
OBJECTIVE: To test the effectiveness of a tailored eHealth PA intervention for increasing PA and decreasing depressive symptoms in individuals at high risk for PPD.
METHODS: We conducted a randomized controlled trial within the Kaiser Permanente Northern California integrated health care delivery syst

BACKGROUND: The perinatal period is critical for women's physical and mental health. Anxiety and depressive symptoms are common, impacting both mothers and peripartum outcomes.
METHODS: This multicenter study in Southern Italy assessed 969 women attending three gynecological departments from January to November 2022. Evaluations occurred in the third trimester (T0) and at 7 days, 1 month, and 6 months postpartum (T1, T2, T3). The Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7) and Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) screened for perinatal anxiety and depression. Additional measures assessed ne

BACKGROUND: Postpartum Psychosis (PP) is a severe perinatal psychiatric disorder affecting 1-2 in 1000 individuals following childbirth. Most episodes emerge within the first two weeks postpartum and commonly present with mania and decreased need for sleep. The postnatal period is a time of profound sleep disruption and sleep deprivation is a known trigger for mania and psychosis. Despite growing recognition of the role of sleep in the onset and progression of PP, this relationship remains poorly understood. Existing research is largely retrospective, relies on self-reported data and primarily

BACKGROUND: Fear of childbirth (FOC) has been shown to adversely affect the physical and mental health of pregnant women. However, most of the previous studies have explored only certain factors influencing FOC and have not consistently followed birth outcomes and lactation initiation. This study aimed to understand the incidence of FOC antenatally among pregnant women, analyse the factors influencing this fear, investigate the relationship between generalised anxiety disorder (GAD) and FOC, and explore the influence of this fear on birth outcomes and lactation initiation.

This longitudinal study examined whether specific cognitive patterns during pregnancy predict postpartum obsessive-compulsive (OC) symptoms. A diverse sample of 256 women was assessed at 20 weeks of pregnancy (Time 1), 6 weeks postpartum (Time 2; n = 233), and 6 months postpartum (Time 3; n = 231). At each point, participants completed interview and/or self-report measures of OC symptoms, psychological distress, and obsessive beliefs (i.e., cognitive patterns related to OC symptoms). Postpartum OC symptoms were common, reported by 87.1 % at Time 2 and 74.5 % at Time 3. Stronger prenatal obsess

BACKGROUND: Postpartum depression is prevalent among Black women and associated with intersecting systemic factors and interpersonal discrimination. However, gaps remain in understanding pregnancy-related changes in discrimination experiences that influence postpartum mental health and could inform preventive interventions. We hypothesized that young Black women would experience increasing levels of discrimination across the transition to parenthood, heightening depression risk relative to non-pregnant peers.
METHODS: Participants comprised 335 Black primiparous women (ages 17-30 at delivery)

Novel oral anticoagulants (NOACs) are extensively utilized in clinical practice; however, their associated non-bleeding adverse reactions have not been adequately emphasized. This study is based on the FDA Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) database and analyzes adverse events associated with NOACs from a real-world perspective, particularly focusing on non-bleeding adverse reaction signals, to assess differences in the safety of NOACs and provide early warnings for clinical practice. This study obtained raw data from the FAERS database, ranging from July 1, 2014, to March 31, 2024. The da

BACKGROUND: The Syrian crisis, severe economic conditions, and the COVID-19 pandemic have significantly impacted the mental health of Syrians, including mothers who have given birth during these difficult times. These conditions have led to an increased prevalence of postpartum depression (PPD), exacerbated by inadequate responses to these crises.
OBJECTIVES: The study aims to assess the prevalence of PPD among Syrian mothers during the Syrian crisis, economic crisis, and the COVID-19 pandemic. It also seeks to identify the influence of these factors on the occurrence of PPD.

The prevalence of postpartum mental illness is steadily increasing, a tendency that was exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Recent studies show that maternal depression is no longer confined to the perinatal period, and this necessitates long-term assessment and support for maternal mental health. It is critical to identify the factors that are related to depression among mothers, and this requires the development of integrated mental and physical health care encompassing both psychological aspects and intestinal microbiota, physical conditions, and dietary habits. Studies conducted in weste

BACKGROUND: Pregnancy and childbirth are vulnerable periods for women's mental health, with common occurrences of postnatal depression (PPD), postpartum post-traumatic stress symptoms (PP-PTSS) and postnatal severe fear of childbirth (PP-FOC). While previous trauma is linked to higher rates of postpartum psychological difficulties, the mechanisms and variations by parity and sociodemographic factors remain poorly understood. The aim of this study was to compare the prevalence of PPD symptoms, postnatal post-traumatic stress disorder (PP-PTSD), PP-PTSS and PP-FOC between women with a history of

In the present study, we aimed to assess the predictive role of selected factors on maternal responses to infant crying at 6-12 months after birth. About 221 Polish mothers in the postpartum period completed the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS), the 2-item Generalised Anxiety Disorder Scale (GAD-2), the Parental Reflective Functioning Questionnaire (PRFQ), and a Polish adaptation of the My Emotions Scale-the Emotional Reactions to Infant Crying Questionnaire (SER-PD). Through multivariate analyses, we found that educational level, maternal depressive and anxiety symptoms, parental r

BACKGROUND: Perinatal mental health disorders affect maternal and child health significantly. It can manifest as postpartum blues, postnatal depression or a more severe form as postpartum psychosis. Mostly, postpartum mental health disorders remain undiagnosed and untreated and there is paucity of data on the true prevalence of these disorders in the community.
METHODS: The present study has been conducted as a community-based cross-sectional study on postpartum and post-abortion women in the sub-Himalayan hilly area of India. The main objective of the study was to know the prevalence of peri

BACKGROUND: The physical and psychological challenges faced by postpartum women adversely affect their health-related quality of life (HRQoL). However, the influence of urinary incontinence (UI), sexual dysfunction, and depressive symptoms on HRQoL across the first postpartum year remains unclear.
PURPOSES: This study was designed to investigate the association of UI, sexual dysfunction, and depressive symptoms with HRQoL and to examine changes in HRQoL across the initial 12-month postpartum period.
METHODS: The participants ( n =613) completed the study questionnaire at four time points: 4-

Depression and perceived stress are common perinatal morbidities. We assessed associations between prenatal per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) with prenatal and postpartum depression and perceived stress. We analyzed concentrations of 7 PFAS in maternal plasma or serum in the Environmental influences on Child Health Outcomes (ECHO) cohort (n = 4403). We ascertained prenatal depression diagnosis; prenatal and postpartum depressive symptom severity using a Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System Depression (PROMIS-D) t-score; and prenatal and postpartum perceived stress

BACKGROUND: Pregnant women are at high risk of developing adverse mental health outcomes, such as posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), following climate-related disasters. Childhood maltreatment (CM) may be a pre-existing risk factor that increases vulnerability to PTSD in women exposed to flood-related consequences.
OBJECTIVE: To examine the associations between CM and PTSD symptoms, residential displacement due to flooding and PTSD symptoms, and to test whether these exposures interact to increase the risk for PTSD symptoms.
PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: This cross-sectional included 259 wome

During the perinatal period, many parents experience mental health difficulties of varying severity, which have been associated with adverse outcomes. Examples include perinatal obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) which can be thought to exist on a continuum from subclinical symptoms (e.g., intrusive thoughts (ITs)) to clinical diagnosis of OCD. Similarly postpartum psychosis can range from subclinical 'psychotic like experiences' (PLEs) to clinical diagnosis. These disorders are distinct conditions, yet some argue an overlap or comorbidity in symptoms, including co-occurrence postnatally, and

BACKGROUND: Mental health disorders are widespread during the postpartum period, yet only a minority of affected women seek professional help for their symptoms. While prior studies have explored barriers to help-seeking, certain factors yielded inconsistent results. Our study aimed to investigate whether these factors do not serve as barriers themselves, but rather as predictors of barrier formation. Given the limited previous research on postpartum women affected by posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), we examined those affected by childbirth-related PTSD (CB-PTSD) and general PTSD (gPTSD).

BACKGROUND: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental condition associated with excessive levels of inattention and/or hyperactivity/impulsivity. Symptoms usually persist into adulthood and negatively influence functioning and quality of life. Although sex differences in ADHD are commonly reported, ADHD remains under-recognised in females (including women and people assigned female at birth), and there is limited knowledge about experiences of females with ADHD across hormonal life phases. This study aimed to investigate self-reported ADHD and related traits in fe
