Severe maternal psychopathology and infant-mother attachment.

Eighty-two mother-infant dyads, comprising women with psychiatric disorder and individually matched controls, were followed up over the children's 1st year of life. The mothers with mental illness consisted of two subgroups: first, 25 severely mentally ill mothers who had been admitted to a psychiatric unit with their infants; and second, 16 mothers from a community sample meeting research diagnostic criteria for unipolar, nonpsychotic depression. With the exception of six dyads in the in-patient group, observations were made of the mother-infant interaction and the quality of the infant-mothe

Maternal moods predict breastfeeding in Barbados.

This study was designed to identify psychosocial variables affecting early infant feeding practices in Barbados. The sample included 93 healthy women and infants born at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital who were extensively evaluated 7 weeks, 3 months, and 6 months after birth. Maternal moods were assessed with the Zung Depression and Anxiety Scales and the General Adjustment and Morale Scale. Feeding practices were evaluated using a questionnaire developed for this population. The prevalence of mild depression in this population was 16% at 7 weeks and increased to 19% at 6 months, whereas there w

Sexuality, reproduction, and family planning in women with schizophrenia.

This article reviews data about how schizophrenia affects sexuality, pregnancy, the puerperium, parenting, and family planning. Women with schizophrenia have high rates of coerced sex, sexual risk behavior, and unwanted pregnancies. High rates of obstetric complications and custody loss increase morbidity for women and their offspring. Since untreated psychosis increases these problems, the risks of withholding pharmacotherapy must be weighed against the risks of prescribing medications during pregnancy. The puerperium is a time when women are especially vulnerable to exacerbations of schizoph

Maternal psychopathology and prediction of outcome based on mother-infant interaction ratings (BMIS).

BACKGROUND: Very little is known about the adequacy and safety of maternal parenting behaviour in the context of severe postpartum psychiatric illness, about specific difficulties in relation to different types of mental illness, or about the potential for improvement over the course of an episode of illness. The Bethlem Mother-Infant Interaction Scale (BMIS) was thus developed as an aid to assessment on a specialist psychiatric Mother and Baby Unit. METHOD: Nurses' ratings of the quality of mother-infant interaction using the BMIS were collected throughout the consecutive admissions of 78 in

Cognitive profile of rats exposed to lactational hyperphenylalaninemia: correspondence with human mental retardation.

The present study was designed to provide further information on the enduring cognitive effects of experimental phenylketonuria (PKU) in rats, produced by the administration of alpha-methylphenylalanine and phenylalanine on postnatal days 3-21. These rats evidenced: (1) impaired learning set formation, (2) stimulus perseveration, particularly after an error, and (3) difficulty in utilizing the less salient features of their environment in mastering discrimination problems. In contrast, long-term memory function and the ability to form simple associations did not differ from controls. This patt

Psychiatric complications of progesterone and oral contraceptives.

Progesterone plays a critical role in the menstrual cycle, pregnancy, and sexuality. Its role in premenstrual syndrome, dysmenorrhea, and postpartum disorders is outlined. Oral contraceptives seem to affect mood and behavior in some women without preexisting psychiatric illness, sometimes inducing depression and loss of libido. When used as psychotropic agents, they can have mood-stabilizing effects and relieve premenstrual syndrome.
