BACKGROUND: Perinatal mental health conditions and substance use are leading causes, often co-occurring, of pregnancy-related and pregnancy-associated deaths in the United States. This study compares odds of hospitalization with a mental health condition or substance use disorder or both during the first year postpartum between patients with and without severe maternal morbidity (SMM) during delivery hospitalization.
METHODS: Data are from the Maryland's State Inpatient Database and include patients with a delivery hospitalization during 2016-2018 (n = 197,749). We compare rate of hospitaliza

BACKGROUND: After the birth of a child, also fathers may develop postpartum depression. Altered steroid hormone concentrations are discussed as a possible underlying mechanism, as these have been associated with depressive symptoms in previous studies outside the postpartum period. While higher paternal testosterone levels have been found to protect against paternal postpartum depressive symptoms (PPDS), an association between higher cortisol levels and PPDS has been seen in postpartum mothers, with no comparable studies available on fathers.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate cross-s

BACKGROUND: Women are more prone to experience adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), placing them at higher risk of postpartum mental health disorders. However, research on ACEs, particularly their association with postpartum Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in non-Western contexts, is limited.
OBJECTIVE: To utilize a cumulative risk approach and latent class analysis (LCA) to operationalize ACEs among postpartum women in China and examine their association with postpartum PTSD.
METHODS: In this prospective cohort study, 856 eligible participants from a tertiary hospital in Guangdong pr

BACKGROUND: Detection of perinatal depression by healthcare providers remain an important barrier to receiving treatment. This study reports on the detection of perinatal depression by frontline non-physician primary healthcare workers (PHCWs) as well as the feasibility, effectiveness and acceptability of routine screening using the 2-item patient health questionnaire (PHQ-2) during antenatal care.
METHOD: Twenty-seven primary healthcare facilities were assigned to screening (n = 11) and non-screening (n = 16) arms. All PHCWs in both arms were trained to diagnose and treat perinatal depressio

BACKGROUND: Postpartum depression (PPD) is a common psychological condition affecting 10-20% of postpartum women, characterized by emotional instability, anxiety, and, in severe cases, hallucinations or suicidal ideation. Growing evidence suggests a link between oxidative stress and depression, with nitrite-a key metabolite of nitric oxide (NO)-emerging as a potential biomarker. This study explores the association between salivary nitrite levels, perinatal anxiety, and PPD, aiming to identify predictive factors for early intervention.
METHODS: A prospective clinical study was conducted involv

Animals exhibit a wide range of stress responses aimed at restoring homeostasis and promoting adaptation. In response to stress, they employ coping mechanisms to maintain physiological balance. Dysregulated stress-coping strategies have been associated with mental disorders, including depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder. Understanding the neuronal mechanisms that regulate stress-coping is critical for elucidating normal physiological responses and addressing the pathological processes underlying these disorders. Stress responses are influenced by sex and life stage, with no

Among mental health disorders in the perinatal period, postpartum depression and anxiety are particularly common and iteratively attract research interest. Less focus, however, is placed on postpartum post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and that develops following traumatic experiences during childbirth. Previously, post-traumatic stress disorder was primarily associated with wartime experiences, but it is now understood that various situations perceived as traumatic – such as childbirth – can also trigger this disorder. Our study aims to provide an overview of the risk factors contributing

BACKGROUND: Perinatal depressive symptoms (PDS) are a risk factor for maternal well-being during and following pregnancy as well as for infant development. COVID studies documented a definite increase in PDS during this period of heightened stress, but also highlighted that all women were not equally at risk of perinatal depression. This calls for the identification of factors that could contribute to sensitizing certain individuals to populational stressors such as the COVID-19 pandemic.
OBJECTIVE: Based on the stress sensitization model, this study aimed to evaluate the associations between

BACKGROUND: Mothers of preterm infants report traumatic, anxious and depressive symptoms in the postpartum period. Many studies have focused on biological, social, and life circumstance factors to explain the emergence of these symptoms. The process model proposes to focus on psychological processes, which are mechanisms underlying mental disorders. However, the psychological processes underlying the onset of traumatic, anxious, and depressive symptoms in postpartum mothers of preterm infants had not yet been investigated. The aim of this study was to identify the most common symptoms experien

IMPORTANCE: Mental health disorders are frequent, challenging, and potentially devastating complications during the antenatal and postnatal period with major impact on both women and their offspring, especially if left undiagnosed and untreated or managed in a suboptimal way.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to review and compare the most recently published guidelines on the screening, diagnosis, and management of the most common mental health disorders in pregnancy and the puerperium.

IMPORTANCE: Generous parental leave benefits have been associated with better mental health outcomes for parents after childbirth. However, few studies account for preconception mental health and working conditions, the latter being a requirement for generous parental leave benefits.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association between levels of parental leave benefits and maternal postpartum mental health when preconception mental health, income, and employment status were considered.

OBJECTIVES: (1) To assess the prevalence of depression and treatment rates in antepartum and postpartum women compared to a control group of reproductive-age women over a 12-year period, and (2) To determine demographic characteristics associated with depression.
METHODS: National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data (2007-2018) were used. 5412 controls, 314 antepartum women, and 455 postpartum women were analyzed. Outcomes included depression prevalence, defined as moderate to severe depressive symptoms measured by Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) scores ≥10 or self-reported an

Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) and postpartum depression (PPD) are significant global health challenges affecting maternal and child well-being. HDP, including pre-eclampsia, gestational hypertension, and chronic hypertension, complicate up to 10% of pregnancies worldwide, with profound implications for maternal mortality, particularly in low- to middle-income countries (LMICs) like Ghana. The incidence of HDP is rising globally, contributing substantially to maternal deaths and severe perinatal outcomes such as stillbirth and low birth weight. Concurrently, perinatal mental health

OBJECTIVE: To explore the adherence and perceived usefulness of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) components in the perinatal period and their association with sleep outcomes.
METHODS: Seventy-six nulliparous individuals (age M = 33.07 SD ±3.10) from two randomized control trials who received CBT-I at three time points: late pregnancy (35 weeks' gestation), 1.5-3 months postpartum, and 6 months postpartum were analyzed. At each time point, participants self-reported perceived usefulness and adherence for each of the six CBT-I components, and completed the Insomnia Severity Ind

BACKGROUND: Strong evidence suggests physical activity (PA) can ameliorate postpartum depression (PPD) symptoms; however, many postpartum individuals do not meet PA guidelines. Electronic health (eHealth) interventions are a promising approach to address common barriers to PA during postpartum.
OBJECTIVE: To test the effectiveness of a tailored eHealth PA intervention for increasing PA and decreasing depressive symptoms in individuals at high risk for PPD.
METHODS: We conducted a randomized controlled trial within the Kaiser Permanente Northern California integrated health care delivery syst

BACKGROUND: The perinatal period is critical for women's physical and mental health. Anxiety and depressive symptoms are common, impacting both mothers and peripartum outcomes.
METHODS: This multicenter study in Southern Italy assessed 969 women attending three gynecological departments from January to November 2022. Evaluations occurred in the third trimester (T0) and at 7 days, 1 month, and 6 months postpartum (T1, T2, T3). The Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7) and Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) screened for perinatal anxiety and depression. Additional measures assessed ne

BACKGROUND: Postpartum Psychosis (PP) is a severe perinatal psychiatric disorder affecting 1-2 in 1000 individuals following childbirth. Most episodes emerge within the first two weeks postpartum and commonly present with mania and decreased need for sleep. The postnatal period is a time of profound sleep disruption and sleep deprivation is a known trigger for mania and psychosis. Despite growing recognition of the role of sleep in the onset and progression of PP, this relationship remains poorly understood. Existing research is largely retrospective, relies on self-reported data and primarily

BACKGROUND: Fear of childbirth (FOC) has been shown to adversely affect the physical and mental health of pregnant women. However, most of the previous studies have explored only certain factors influencing FOC and have not consistently followed birth outcomes and lactation initiation. This study aimed to understand the incidence of FOC antenatally among pregnant women, analyse the factors influencing this fear, investigate the relationship between generalised anxiety disorder (GAD) and FOC, and explore the influence of this fear on birth outcomes and lactation initiation.

This longitudinal study examined whether specific cognitive patterns during pregnancy predict postpartum obsessive-compulsive (OC) symptoms. A diverse sample of 256 women was assessed at 20 weeks of pregnancy (Time 1), 6 weeks postpartum (Time 2; n = 233), and 6 months postpartum (Time 3; n = 231). At each point, participants completed interview and/or self-report measures of OC symptoms, psychological distress, and obsessive beliefs (i.e., cognitive patterns related to OC symptoms). Postpartum OC symptoms were common, reported by 87.1 % at Time 2 and 74.5 % at Time 3. Stronger prenatal obsess
