BACKGROUND: Hyperemesis gravidarum is a severe form of nausea and vomiting that occurs during pregnancy. The connection between psychiatric morbidity, especially depression, and hyperemesis gravidarum has been debated from contradictory findings. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate the associations between hyperemesis gravidarum and both pre-pregnancy and new-onset post-pregnancy depression.
METHODS: We conducted a nationwide register-based controlled study in Finland between Jan 1, 2004, and Dec 31, 2017. Data were collected from 2004 to assess at least 1 year of pre-pregnancy depression as deli

Postpartum psychosis (PP) is an acute and severe psychiatric illness with onset within weeks after delivery and a high risk of suicide and infanticide. Most women with PP experience severe mood symptoms, including mania, mixed episodes, or depression with psychotic features. Impaired cognition, irritability, and agitation are also common. The specific timing of PP strongly suggests a biological basis, because the postpartum time period is characterized by profound endocrine, immune, neuroanatomical, and physiological changes in the brain. Genetic studies show a unique risk architecture, partly

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether postpartum domperidone use is associated with new-onset psychosis and other severe mental health outcomes.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of people who filled a prescription for domperidone within 56 days of delivery between March 1, 2006, and March 1, 2022, in Ontario, Canada. Those who filled a domperidone prescription were matched 1:1 based on propensity score to an equal number of those who did not. The primary outcome was any health care contact for incident psychosis in the subsequent 365 days, with a secondary outcome of any psychiatri

BACKGROUND: Sensitivity to ovarian hormone fluctuations can lead to mental distress during the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle, such as in premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), and also during pregnancy and postpartum, as in perinatal depression (PND).
AIMS: In two cohorts, we investigated the relationship between history of PMS/PMDD and PND symptoms. We also examined how premenstrual symptoms are associated with perinatal symptom trajectories and dimensional phenotypes of PND symptoms, which remains unidentified.
METHOD: From early pregnancy until 6 mon

AIMS: To examine the risk of perinatal mental illness, including new diagnoses and recurrent use of mental healthcare, comparing women with and without traumatic brain injury (TBI), and to identify injury-related factors associated with these outcomes among women with TBI.
METHODS: We conducted a population-based cohort study in Ontario, Canada, of all obstetrical deliveries to women in 2012-2021, excluding those with mental healthcare use in the year before conception. The cohort was stratified into women with no remote mental illness history (to identify new mental illness diagnoses between

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) reflect childhood exposure to abuse, neglect, and family stressors and are associated with subsequent poor mental health. Maternal ACEs can have lasting effects for mothers and their children. Few studies of maternal ACEs have been conducted in low- and middle-income countries. We aimed to determine the relationship between maternal ACEs and mental health among postpartum mothers in Kenya with and without HIV. This nested cross-sectional study used data from mothers attending 6-week postnatal care visits enrolled in the HOPE study. Outcomes of interest were

BACKGROUND: Postpartum mental illnesses and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) are both common, and both associated with adverse maternal and child health outcomes. However, the relationship between them is unclear. This study aimed to investigate prevalence and symptom severity of depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) 2-years postpartum in women with normal blood pressure (NBP) during pregnancy versus preeclampsia or gestational hypertension (GH).
METHODS: Two-years follow-up of the prospective Postpartum, Physiology, Psychology and Paediatric (P4) Cohort Stud

PURPOSE: Women are at high risk of stress, anxiety, and depression during the postpartum but the ways in which these different types of psychological distress are related to cortisol regulation is not clear. We examined the distinct association of each type of distress with women's average cortisol level, cortisol awakening response (CAR), cortisol decline across the day (diurnal slope), and overall amount of cortisol secretion across the day (AUCG).
METHODS: At 6 months postpartum, a diverse group of 58 women completed measures of depression, anxiety, perceived stress, and life stressors. Ea

BACKGROUND: Stillbirth occurs more commonly among pregnant people with comorbid conditions and obstetrical complications. Stillbirth also independently increases maternal morbidity and imparts a psychosocial hazard when compared with live birth. These distinct needs and burden may increase the risk for postpartum readmission after stillbirth.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine the risk for maternal postpartum readmission after stillbirth in comparison with live birth and to identify indications for readmission and the associated risk factors.
STUDY DESIGN: This was a retrospective cohort

INTRODUCTION: Active-duty servicewomen and veterans make up nearly 20% of the United States military and may experience trauma specific to military service. Military-specific trauma includes combat deployment and military sexual trauma, exposure to which may result in posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The purpose of this scoping review is to examine the extent to which military trauma exposures impact the pregnancy outcomes of active-duty servicewomen and women veterans.
METHODS: A systematic search of OVID MEDLINE, OVID Embase, and OVID PsycINFO from inception to September 25, 2023, iden

Purpose: Postpartum psychosis (PPP) is a serious mental health illness affecting women post-parturition. Around 1 in 1000 women are affected by postpartum psychosis, and the symptoms usually appear within 2 weeks after birth. Postpartum mental disorders are classified into 3 main categories starting from the least to most severe types, including baby blues, postpartum depression, and postpartum psychosis. Materials and Methods: In this systematic review, genetic and epigenetic factors associated with postpartum psychosis are discussed. A PRISMA flow diagram was followed, and the following data

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder is a childhood-onset neurodevelopmental disorder that frequently persists into adulthood with 3% of adult women having a diagnosis of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. Many women are diagnosed and treated during their reproductive years, which leads to management implications during pregnancy and the postpartum period. We know from clinical practice that attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder symptoms frequently become challenging to manage during the perinatal period and require additional support and attention. There is often uncertainty amo

OBJECTIVE: Being a mother of a young child may be protective against alcohol misuse for some, but not all, women. This is the first study to identify the mental health and psychosocial correlates of alcohol misuse among postpartum mothers.
METHOD: Mothers with a child younger than 12 months (n = 319) were recruited via social media to complete a cross-sectional online survey. Two hierarchical logistic regressions examined unique factors associated with heavy episodic drinking and hazardous alcohol use, including sociodemographic, poor mental health, and psychosocial factors.
RESULTS: On aver

BACKGROUND: Postpartum depression is among the most common complications associated with child-bearing having a period prevalence rate of 17%. Despite the prevalence of postpartum depression, recognition and treatment remains low.
METHODS: This paper examines the predictors of help-seeking behavior among a sample (N = 326) of postpartum women. A cross-sectional survey was deployed, and participants were recruited via social media through snowball and convenient sampling techniques.
RESULTS: Binary logistic regression was used to analyze the data. Results indicate the severity of depression a

Postnatal depression is a common and severe complication of childbirth. It is an important public health problem with significant implications for both mothers and children. The exact mechanisms underlying and the factors influencing the occurrence of postnatal depression remain unclear. The literature suggests that certain dietary deficiencies during pregnancy and the postnatal period may contribute to a greater risk of maternal depression. This review focuses on the role of selenium in postnatal depression. It collects evidence from published interventional and observational studies investig

BACKGROUND: Postpartum fatigue (PPF) can impair the physical and mental well-being of women. The aims of this study were to assess the associations between fatigue and maternal health-related variables, specifically, sleep quality, depression symptoms, and resilience, and to explore the moderating role of resilience in the relationships between sleep quality, depression symptoms, and fatigue.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study used data collected from mothers during the postpartum period via an online platform. PPF was assessed using the Fatigue Severity Scale, whereas sleep quality and depr

BACKGROUND: Perinatal mental health conditions and substance use are leading causes, often co-occurring, of pregnancy-related and pregnancy-associated deaths in the United States. This study compares odds of hospitalization with a mental health condition or substance use disorder or both during the first year postpartum between patients with and without severe maternal morbidity (SMM) during delivery hospitalization.
METHODS: Data are from the Maryland's State Inpatient Database and include patients with a delivery hospitalization during 2016-2018 (n = 197,749). We compare rate of hospitaliza
