Migration and perinatal mental health in women from low- and middle-income countries: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Migrant women are at risk of perinatal mental disorders due to stressors experienced before, during and after migration. OBJECTIVES: This systematic review and meta-analysis summarises the prevalence, associated factors and interventions for perinatal mental disorders in migrant women from low- and middle-income countries (LMIC). SEARCH STRATEGY: We systematically searched nine electronic databases and the grey literature using a predefined search strategy. SELECTION CRITERIA: Studies were included if they assessed pregnant or postpartum migrants from LMIC, used a structured too

A review of the safety of clozapine during pregnancy and lactation.

Clozapine is an antipsychotic used in the management of treatment-resistant schizophrenia. However, little is known about clozapine use during pregnancy and lactation, or its impact on the mother, foetus, and infant. This review aims to summarize the available literature on the safety of clozapine use during the perinatal period. EMBASE, PsycINFO, and MEDLINE were searched from their inceptions through June 2016. The review encompasses 21 studies that have examined clozapine use during pregnancy and lactation. The limited available data do not support an increased risk of congenital malformati

Postpartum depression in the Occupied Palestinian Territory: a longitudinal study in Bethlehem.

BACKGROUND: Postpartum depression (PPD) affects women from different cultures around the world. No previous studies have investigated PPD among women in Palestine. Fertility rates in Palestine are among the highest in the world, hence even low rates of PPD could have considerable national impact. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of, and risk factors for, PPD among Palestinian mothers. METHODS: 101 mothers were recruited during the registration of their child's birth (within 1 week) at the Bethlehem branch of the Ministry of Interior. Participants were assessed via a face

All-Cause Mortality in Women With Severe Postpartum Psychiatric Disorders.

OBJECTIVE: The postpartum period is associated with a high risk of psychiatric episodes. The authors studied mortality in women with first-onset severe psychiatric disorders following childbirth and compared their mortality rates with those in women from the background population including other female psychiatric patients (mothers and childless women). METHOD: In a register-based cohort study with linked information from Danish population registers, the authors identified women with first psychiatric inpatient or outpatient contacts 0-3 months postpartum. The main outcome measure was mortali

Serum leptin level measured 48 h after delivery is associated with development of postpartum depressive symptoms: a 3-month follow-up study.

The aim of this study was to assess the possible relationship between leptin status and postpartum depressive symptoms using serum levels of leptin collected 24-48 h after delivery in a cohort Chinese sample. Women delivering a full-term, singleton, and live-born infant in the period from August 2013 to March 2014 were enrolled immediately postpartum. A blood sample was obtained 24-48 h after childbirth to test serum levels of leptin. Participation consisted of a visit in an obstetric unit at 3 months after delivery. The Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS), completed at 3 months postpa

Longitudinal suicidal ideation across 18-months postpartum in mothers with childhood maltreatment histories.

OBJECTIVE: The current study extends our understanding of postpartum suicidal ideation (SI) in the context of childhood maltreatment (CM). The study longitudinally examines the prevalence and severity of maternal SI. We further examined risk and protective factors' associations with postpartum SI. METHODS: SI was assessed at 4, 6, 12, 15, and 18-months postpartum in a non-clinical sample of mothers with CM histories (N=116). For the first aim, frequency, longitudinal percentage counts, and ANOVAs were conducted. For the second aim, logistic and linear regressions were completed to examine ass

Risk of Mental Health Disorders Following an Initial Diagnosis of Postpartum Depression, Active Component, U.S. Armed Forces, 1998-2010.

Postpartum depression (PPD) is one of the most common psychiatric conditions of the postpartum period. Several studies have found an association between PPD and other mental health disorders. The Defense Medical Surveillance System (DMSS) was used to identify a cohort of primiparous service women with PPD between 1998 and 2010 and match them by month of delivery to a cohort of women without PPD. During the surveillance period, there were 5,203 incident cases of PPD with a crude rate of 44.9 per 1,000 person-years. Individuals in the PPD cohort, when compared to their matched controls, were at

Long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acid status during pregnancy and maternal mental health in pregnancy and the postpartum period: results from the GUSTO study.

OBJECTIVE: Studies have demonstrated a relationship between lower omega-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acid (LC-PUFA) status and anxiety and depression. It is uncertain whether similar associations occur in pregnant women, when anxiety and depression could have long-term effects on the offspring. We examined the associations between plasma LC-PUFA status during pregnancy and perinatal mental health. METHOD: At 26-28 weeks' gestation, plasma LC-PUFAs were measured in mothers of the Growing Up in Singapore Toward healthy Outcomes (GUSTO) mother-offspring cohort study, who were recruited bet

High-frequency intimate partner violence during pregnancy, postnatal depression and suicidal tendencies in Harare, Zimbabwe.

INTRODUCTION: Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a common form of violence experienced by pregnant women and is believed to have adverse mental health effects postnatally. This study investigated the association of postnatal depression (PND) and suicidal ideation with emotional, physical and sexual IPV experienced by women during pregnancy. METHODS: Data were collected from 842 women interviewed postnatally in six postnatal clinics in Harare, Zimbabwe. We used the World Health Organization versions of IPV and Centre for Epidemiological Studies - Depression Scale measures to assess IPV and PND

Perinatal depression and omega-3 fatty acids: a Mendelian randomisation study.

BACKGROUND: There have been numerous studies investigating the association between omega-3 fatty acids (FAs) and depression, with mixed findings. We propose an approach which is largely free from issues such as confounding or reverse causality, to investigate this relationship using observational data from a pregnancy cohort. METHODS: The Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC) cohort collected information on FA levels from antenatal blood samples and depressive symptoms at several time points during pregnancy and the postnatal period. Conventional epidemiological analyses we

Psychiatric disorders and gestational weight gain among women who quit smoking during pregnancy.

OBJECTIVE: Pregnancy is a common time for women to quit using cigarettes and other substances. Such changes in substance use as well as other psychiatric and psychosocial changes during pregnancy can affect gestational weight gain (GWG). Thus, we evaluated the relationship between psychiatric disorders and GWG among pregnant women who had quit smoking. METHODS: Pregnant former smokers (n = 281) enrolled in a larger trial for postpartum relapse prevention completed semi-structured psychiatric interviews and measures of prepregnancy nicotine dependence and smoking behavior, and were weighed to

Steroid hormones in the development of postpartum depression.

Postpartum depression affects 10-15 % women after childbirth. There is no currently generally accepted theory about the causes and mechanisms of postpartum mental disorders. The principal hypothesis concerns the association with sudden changes in the production of hormones affecting the nervous system of the mother and, on the other hand, with the ability of receptor systems to adapt to these changes. We observed changes in steroidogenesis in the period around spontaneous delivery. We collected three samples of maternal blood. The first sampling was 4 weeks prior to term; the second sampling w
