Eating Disorders and Intimate Partner Violence: The Influence of Fear of Loneliness and Social Withdrawal.

Eating disorders are vulnerability factors that increase the likelihood of intimate partner violence. However, the mechanisms underlying this relationship are unclear. Although eating disorders have been associated with increased perception and fear of loneliness, they have also been associated with increased social withdrawal resulting from decreased enjoyment of social situations and poorer social functioning. The purpose of the present study was to examine the mediating role of fear of loneliness in the relationship between the behavioural characteristics of eating disorders and intimate pa

Associations of executive function and age of first use of methamphetamine with methamphetamine relapse.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Methamphetamine (MA) is a psychostimulant associated with a high relapse rate among patients with MA use disorder (MUD). Long-term use of MA is associated with mental disorders, executive dysfunction, aggressive behaviors, and impulsivity among patients with MUD. However, identifying which factors may be more closely associated with relapse has not been investigated. Thus, we aimed to investigate the psychological factors and the history of MA use that may influence MA relapse. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 168 male MUD patients (MUD group) and 65 healthy m

Evaluation of Psychological Distress, Self-Care, and Medication Adherence in Association with Hypertension Control.

BACKGROUND: Most of the patients with hypertension (HTN) who undergo medical therapy unaccompanied by psychological and behavioral interventions may not achieve their goal in HTN treatment. Self-care is a key factor in controlling HTN. Given that depression, stress, and anxiety are the most psychological disorders in chronic illnesses. Their impact on self-care, quality of life, and HTN control must be studied more. METHODS: We analyzed the difference in medication adherence in 252 patients with low vs. high psychological distress. Also, patients with controlled and uncontrolled HTN were comp

The cardiac distress inventory: A new measure of psychosocial distress associated with an acute cardiac event.

BACKGROUND: Many challenges are posed by the experience of a heart attack or heart surgery which can be characterised as 'cardiac distress'. It spans multiple psychosocial domains incorporating patients' responses to physical, affective, cognitive, behavioural and social symptoms and experiences related to their cardiac event and their recovery. Although some measures of the psychological and emotional impacts of a cardiac event exist, none provides a comprehensive assessment of cardiac distress. To address this gap, the study aimed to develop a Cardiac Distress Inventory (CDI) using best prac

[Cardiac Rehabilitation].

A scientific guideline has been developed to update and harmonize exercise based cardiac rehabilitation (CR) in German speaking countries of Europe. It addresses all aspects of CR including indications, contents and delivery. Four meta-analyses were performed to evaluate the prognostic effect of CR after acute coronary syndrome (ACS), after coronary bypass grafting (CABG), in patients with systolic heart failure (HFrEF), and to define the effect of psychological interventions during CR. Other indications for CR were based on a predefined semi-structured literature search and recommendations we

FOXN3 and GDNF Polymorphisms as Common Genetic Factors of Substance Use and Addictive Behaviors.

Epidemiological and phenomenological studies suggest shared underpinnings between multiple addictive behaviors. The present genetic association study was conducted as part of the Psychological and Genetic Factors of Addictions study (n = 3003) and aimed to investigate genetic overlaps between different substance use, addictive, and other compulsive behaviors. Association analyses targeted 32 single-nucleotide polymorphisms, potentially addictive substances (alcohol, tobacco, cannabis, and other drugs), and potentially addictive or compulsive behaviors (internet use, gaming, social networking s

Past-year hallucinogen use in relation to psychological distress, depression, and suicidality among US adults.

BACKGROUND: There is renewed interest in the clinical application of hallucinogenic substances to treat a range of psychiatric conditions. However, there is mixed evidence regarding how use of such substances outside of medical settings relates to psychological distress, depression, and suicidality. METHODS: We examined data from a US representative sample of noninstitutionalized adults from the 2015-2020 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (N = 241,675). We evaluated whether past-year use of specific hallucinogens (i.e., LSD, DMT/AMT/Foxy, salvia divinorum, ecstasy [MDMA/Molly], ketamine)

Hippocampal F3/Contactin plays a role in chronic stress-induced depressive-like effects and the antidepressant actions of vortioxetine in mice.

Depression is a very prevalent psychiatric disorder which threats nearly one in six of the population in this world. To date, the pathogenesis of depression remains elusive and is thought to depend on multiple factors in which chronic stress is critical. Currently, it has been demonstrated that besides monoaminergic dysfunction, depression is accompanied by several other important pathological phenomena such as impaired neurogenesis and decreased brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF)-cAMP response element binding protein (CREB) signaling cascade in the hippocampus. F3/Contactin is a cell-ad

The first genome-wide association study of internet addiction; Revealed substantial shared risk factors with neurodevelopmental psychiatric disorders.

BACKGROUND: Internet addiction disorder (IAD) is listed as a disorder requiring further studies in the diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders (DSM-V). Psychological studies showed significant co-morbidity of IAD with depression, alcohol abuse, and anxiety disorder. Etiology and genetic bases of IAD are unclear. AIMS: Present study aimed to investigate the genetic, psychological, and cognitive bases of a tendency to internet addiction. METHODS AND PROCEDURES: DNA was extracted from blood samples of IADs (N = 16,520) and 18,000 matched non-psychiatric subjects. Genotyping for th

Coping motives mediate the relationship between PTSD and MDMA use in adolescents with substance use disorders.

BACKGROUND: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and substance use disorders (SUDs) often co-occur in adolescent patients. Previous research has shown that these patients differ from SUD patients without PTSD in terms of their substance use patterns. In this study, we aimed to test whether substance use in this population is related to an attempt to self-medicate PTSD-related symptoms. METHODS: German adolescent patients (aged 13-18 years) at an outpatient clinic for SUD treatment, n = 111 (43% female), completed a self-designed questionnaire on use motives, a measure of PTSD-related experie

Psychological Contributions to Symptom Provocation Testing After Concussion.

OBJECTIVE: Following concussion, symptoms such as headache, dizziness, and fatigue may transiently worsen or reemerge with increased exertion or activity. Standardized tests have been developed to assess symptom increases following aerobic, cognitive, or vestibular/oculomotor challenge. Although neurophysiological mechanisms are proposed to underlie symptom increases following exertion, psychological factors such as anxiety and misinterpretation of normal bodily sensations may also play a role. In this study, we examined the contribution of psychological factors to symptom provocation testing

[Risk factors and prevention strategies in eating disorders].

Scientific evidence supports an interactive model of biopsychosocial influences on the etiology of eating disorders. New genome-wide association studies suggest underlying metabolic dysregulation in anorexia nervosa. Among the psychological factors, body dissatisfaction (IC) is the most consistent predictor, mainly in females. Low self-esteem, negative affect and internalization of the ideal of thinness predict IC. Certain personality traits and other individual factors such as a high body mass index, emotional problems and some metabolic and digestive diseases, social factors such as some spo

Evaluating thinking styles in adults with an eating disorder: Associations with life satisfaction, psychological symptoms, and treatment engagement.

Cognitive weaknesses have been implicated as a vulnerability factor in the development and maintenance of eating disorders. Despite this, cognitive styles are not routinely assessed in adult outpatient eating disorder programs and little is known about how they may impact patients' functional outcomes, psychological symptoms, or treatment engagement. The aim of this study was to evaluate thinking styles (i.e., cognitive rigidity and attention to detail) among adults attending specialized outpatient treatment for an eating disorder and assess whether such styles were associated with participant
