Neural processing of social rejection: the role of schizotypal personality traits.

A fear of being rejected can cause perceptions of more insecurity and stress in close relationships. Healthy individuals activate the dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (dACC) when experiencing social rejection, while those who are vulnerable to depression deactivate the dACC presumably to downregulate salience of rejection cues and minimize distress. Schizotypal individuals, characterized by unusual perceptual experiences and/or odd beliefs, are more rejection sensitive than normal. We tested the hypothesis, for the first time, that individuals with high schizotypy also have an altered dACC res

Gender differences in firesetting: results from the national epidemiologic survey on alcohol and related conditions (NESARC).

This study presents gender differences in sociodemographics and in psychiatric correlates of firesetting in the United States. Data were derived from the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions (NESARC), a representative sample of U.S. adults. Face-to-face interviews of more than 43,000 adults were conducted in the 2001-2002 period. This study focused on the 407 subjects with a lifetime history of firesetting. The prevalence of lifetime firesetting in the U.S. was 1.7% in men and 0.4% in women. Firesetting was significantly associated with a wide range of antisocial beh

Sociodemographic and diagnostic characteristics of homicidal and nonhomicidal sexual offenders.

The aims of this study were to compare the prevalence of psychiatric disorders and "psychopathy" in homicidal and nonhomicidal sexual offenders and to investigate the specificity of previous studies on psychiatric morbidity of a sample of sexual murderers. Information from court reports of 166 homicidal and 56 nonhomicidal sex offenders was evaluated using standardized instruments (SCID-II, PCL-R) and classification systems (DSM-IV). Sexual murderers were diagnosed more often with a personality disorder (80.1% vs. 50%; p < 0.001), especially schizoid personality disorder (16.3% vs. 5.4%; p < 0

Social anhedonia, but not positive schizotypy, is associated with poor affective control.

Emotion researchers have distinguished between automatic versus controlled processing of affective information. One previous study with a small sample size found that extreme levels of social anhedonia (SocAnh) in college students, which predicts future schizophrenia-spectrum disorders, is associated with problems in controlled affective processing on a primed evaluation task. The current study examined whether in a larger college student sample SocAnh but not elevated perceptual aberration/magical ideation (PerMag) was associated with poor controlled affective processing. On the primed evalua

[Gottfried Benn and schizoidism].

Based on increasing criticism concerning operational diagnostics in psychiatry, the concept of schizoid personality disorder in ICD and DSM is discussed critically. In a case study regarding the poet and doctor Gottfried Benn, the limitation of manualized, context-independent diagnostic systems is shown. In contrast Ernst Kretschmer's concept of schizoidism seems suitable to describe a schizoid character in his ambiguity.

[Psychiatric disorders among parents of patients with anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa].

Family diseases represent a risk factor in the multifactorial etiology model regarding the genesis of eating disorders. In German-speaking countries only a few studies give attention to this topic. The aim of this study is to investigate the occurrence frequency of psychiatric disorders and personality styles among parents of juvenile patients with eating disorders. Furthermore a comparison between parents of patients with restrictive anorexia nervosa (AN-R) and parents of patients with bulimia nervosa (BN) is carried out. Psychiatric disorders listed on Axis I and Axis II of DSM-IV (American

After hours: temporal developments at the edge of the analytic session.

The author presents case material of a rigid, schizoid patient who at some point during his treatment began to come late for sessions. He once missed an entire session only to appear at the door after the scheduled hour had passed; this "timing" was evidently intentional. Discussion centers upon the meaning of this kind of phenomenon; it seemed that this particular patient was trying to remold the analytic frame, and the analyst's temporal experience, in accordance with a deeply primitive experience of the "shape" of time, and thereby carve out a sanctuary into which he could sequester his idi

Coping flexibility in young adults: comparison between subjects with and without schizotypal personality features.

The current study examined characteristics of coping patterns adopted by college students in mainland China. In particular, it examined the coping strategies adopted by subjects with schizotypal personality (SPD) features compared to those without SPD features, and compared the relative effectiveness of their coping. Four types of coping flexibility were identified among the college sample (n=427), including active-inflexible, passive-inflexible, active-inconsistent, and passive-inconsistent styles. The passive-inconsistent style was related to the worst outcomes. When comparing subjects with

Sensitivity and specificity of the Chinese version of the Schizotypal Personality Questionnaire-Brief for identifying undergraduate students susceptible to psychosis.

BACKGROUND: Early interventions can improve treatment outcomes for individuals with major psychiatric disorders and with nonspecific symptoms but increasingly impaired cognitive perception, emotions, and behaviour. One way used to identify people susceptible to psychosis is through the schizotypal personality trait. Persons with schizotypal characteristics have been identified with the widely used Schizotypal Personality Questionnaire-Brief. However, no suitable instruments are available to screen individuals in the Taiwanese population for evidence of early psychotic symptoms. OBJECTIVES: Th

[Use of aripiprazole in the treatment of catatonia].

INTRODUCTION: Successful aripiprazole treatment of catatonia was reported in some recent case reports. METHOD: Review of the literature and three case reports. RESULTS: In the presented cases it was demonstrated that aripiprazole was effective in the treatment of catatonia in patients with schizophrenia, major depression or brief psychotic disorder. CONCLUSION: Besides benzodiazepines and electroconvulsive therapy, aripiprazole might be an alternative treatment for catatonia, however randomized controlled trials are required to prove the effectiveness of aripiprazole in patients with catato

Gender-related influences of parental alcoholism on the prevalence of psychiatric illnesses: analysis of the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions.

BACKGROUND: Offspring of individuals with alcoholism are at increased risk for psychiatric illness, but the effects of gender on this risk are not well known. In this study, we tested the hypothesis that the gender of the parent with alcoholism and the gender of offspring affect the association between parental alcoholism and offspring psychiatric illness. METHOD: We analyzed the National Epidemiological Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions (NESARC) data to examine the gender-specific prevalence of axis I and axis II disorders in 23,006 male and 17,368 female respondents with and without

Hidden gifts of love: a clinical application of object relations theory.

Using an extended clinical example, the author applies aspects of Kleinian, Fairbairnian, and Bionian theory to demonstrate how individuals may come to hide away feelings of both love and aggression. In the clinical material presented, a version of a schizoid retreat was understood as a pervasive response to trauma. The author attempts to explore more specifically the nature of a 'traumatizing outer world' ( Guntrip, 1969 ) and how these experiences cause an individual to retreat and undermine movement toward healthy adult dependency. An understanding of these dynamics helps inform the psychoa

A source, a cascade, a schizoid: a heuristic proposal from the Longitudinal Study of Personality Disorders.

It is argued that personality pathology represents the final emergent product of a complex interaction of underlying neurobehavioral systems as well as environment inputs. A number of factors may be involved in the developmental pathway and a cascading of effects is plausible, although a unifying cascade for all personality disorders is not likely. The present study suggests a possible cascade relevant to one personality disorder: schizoid personality disorder in emerging adulthood. In brief, it is hypothesized that the absence of a relationship characterized by a rich degree of psychological

Are personality patterns and clinical syndromes associated with patients' motives and perceived outcome of orthognathic surgery?

PURPOSE: A study of surgical-orthodontic patients was performed to assess whether signs of personality patterns and psychologically defined clinical syndromes influenced patients' motives for treatment, perceived oral function, self-concept, social interaction, and overall satisfaction with treatment. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The sample consisted of 92 adult surgical-orthodontic patients. They filled out 3 questionnaires from Kiyak et al: one on motives for treatment; another on perceived oral function, self-concept, and social interaction; and a third on satisfaction with treatment outcome. Hypertrophic discoid lupus erythematosus.

Hypertrophic discoid lupus erythematosus is a distinct form of chronic cutaneous (discoid) lupus, which is characterized by hyperkeratotic plaques that typically are observed over the face, arms, and upper trunk. We present the case of a 43-year-old man with verrucous plaques that were distributed symmetrically over the face, who initially was treated with oral antibiotics and topical glucocorticoids for acne vulgaris. A biopsy specimen confirmed the diagnosis of hypertrophic discoid lupus erythematosus. The clinical and histopathologic features of this clinical variant are reviewed.

Patients with cluster a personality disorders in psychotherapy: an effectiveness study.

BACKGROUND: While psychopharmacological studies are common in patients with cluster A personality disorders, the effects of psychotherapy have received little attention. The aim of this study is to explore whether psychotherapeutic treatment yields health gains for these patients. METHODS: The study was conducted between March 2003 and June 2008 in 6 mental health care centres in the Netherlands, with a sample of 57 patients with a DSM-IV-TR axis II cluster A diagnosis. Patients were assigned to 3 settings of psychotherapeutic treatment (outpatient, day hospital, inpatient), and effectiveness

Thought disorder in Asperger syndrome and schizophrenia: issues in the differential diagnosis. A series of case reports.

The relationship between Asperger syndrome (AS) and schizophrenia is still unclear. An unanswered question is, do hallucinations or delusions per se justify a diagnosis of schizophrenia when these symptoms appear in subjects with AS? The aims of the present study were: (1) to review the characteristics of thought disorder in AS and schizophrenia; (2) to describe the clinical features of six adult patients with AS who presented psychotic symptoms without mood symptoms; (3) to observe their clinical course and response to therapy in order to speculate possible relations between AS and schizophre
