[Personality disorders in eating disorder patients].

Personality disorders in eating disorder patients. A follow-up study was designed to analyze the relation between personality disorders (PD) and the course of eating disorders (ED) in 34 patients who required treatment over 4 years and half. 91% of the clinical sample met the criteria for PD at the initial assessment and 36% at the end of treatment, with a significant reduction in MCMI-II scores at follow-up. The outcome of the ED was significantly related to the PD outcome. There was a higher rate of improvement of PD in the bulimic group (61%) than in anorexic group (34%). The patients who p

Facial affect recognition deficit as a marker of genetic vulnerability to schizophrenia.

The aim of this study was to investigate the possibility that affect recognition impairments are associated with genetic liability to schizophrenia. In a group of 55 unaffected relatives of schizophrenia patients (parents and siblings) we examined the capacity to detect facially expressed emotions and its relationship to schizotypal personality, neurocognitive functioning, and the subject's actual emotional state. The relatives were compared with 103 schizophrenia patients and 99 healthy subjects without any family history of psychoses. Emotional stimuli were nine black-and-white photos of act

Immersion in the surface.

In order to treat patients with a narcissistic structure showing a rigid shell of defence together with a lack of inner differentiation - insufficient subject/object constitution - one has to deal with a split kind of transference. Their compelling need for distance corresponds to their fragile self-esteem. They feel threatened by the analysis and the analytic relationship. Because the seeming normality of these patients' thinking and language is deceptive, a variation of psychoanalytic technique to facilitate the work with them is described and explained in detail. To transform their two-dime

"I am not complaining"--ambivalence construct in schizoid personality disorder.

Patients with schizoid personality disorders (SPD) often challenge clinicians because of their seemingly detached and restricted affective behaviour, which may be interpreted as lack of motivation for treatment and lifestyle changes. However, Bleuler indicated the intrapsychic dynamics of ambivalence in schizoid disorder, and it has been discussed in later literature on psychopathology. Schizoid ambivalence refers to contrasting feelings in patients of a seemingly emotionally detached appearance that may curtain an inner, heightened sensitivity and longing for closeness. This article introduce

When less is more: how fewer diagnostic criteria can indicate greater severity.

For diagnosing many mental disorders, the current Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) system weights each diagnostic criterion equally--each criterion counts the same toward meeting the diagnostic threshold. Research on the diagnostic efficiency of criteria, however, reveals that some diagnostic criteria are more useful than others for identifying their associated mental disorders. That some criteria are more useful than others suggests that the criteria may indicate different levels of severity, but this has yet to be empirically tested. Using data from a large epidemi

Does change in temperament predict change in schizoid personality disorder? A methodological framework and illustration from the Longitudinal Study of Personality Disorders.

Personality disorders (PDs) have been thought historically to be enduring, inflexible, and set in psychological stone relatively firmly; however, empirical findings from recent prospective multiwave longitudinal studies establish otherwise. Nearly all modern longitudinal studies of personality disorder have documented considerable change in PDs over time, suggesting considerable flexibility and plasticity in this realm of psychopathology. The factors and mechanisms of change in the PDs remain essentially opaque, and this area of PD research is just beginning to be probed using candidate predic

Developmental instability in social anhedonia: an examination of minor physical anomalies and clinical characteristics.

Developmental instability (DI) refers to the inability of the developing brain to buffer the effects of genetic and environmental insults. This concept has been invoked to better understand how fetal brain development goes awry in schizophrenia and related spectrum disorders. This study examined one marker of DI, minor physical anomalies (MPAs), and its association with a putative indicator of schizotypy, the trait of social anhedonia. MPAs and clinical symptoms were assessed within a community sample of psychometrically identified individuals high in social anhedonia and a matched group of he

[The prevalence of personality disorders in the greater-Reykjavik area].

The prevalence of personality disorders was estimated in a sample of 805 individuals randomly selected from the greater Reykjavik area. The sample consisted of 3 equally large cohorts of persons born in 1931, 1951 and 1971. The individuals were asked to participate in a survey of mental health. Of those contacted, 52% of the total group participated. The instrument used for estimating personality disorders was the DIP-Q. The results show that the overall percentage with any disorder was 11 % according to DSM-IV and 12 % according to ICD-10. The most frequent disorder of the whole group, accord

Schizoid-like features and season of birth in a nonpatient sample.

OBJECTIVES: People with the deficit subtype of schizophrenia differs from others with schizophrenia with regard to risk factors, signs and symptoms, biological correlates, treatment response, and course of illness. The deficit group, which is characterized by decreased social interests and a lack of depression, has a well-replicated association with June/July birth, which contrasts with the association of schizophrenia as a whole with winter birth. As some of the correlates of schizophrenia are found in subclinical form in the schizophrenia spectrum, we hypothesized that June/July birth would

Assessing interpersonal aspects of schizoid personality disorder: preliminary validation studies.

In 2 studies, we examined the reliability and validity of an interpersonal measure of schizoid personality disorder (SZPD) based on nonverbal behaviors and interpersonal interactions occurring during interviews. A total of 556 male jail inmates in the United States participated in Study 1; 175 mentally disordered offenders in maximum security hospitals in the United Kingdom participated in Study 2. Across both samples, scores on the Interpersonal Measure of Schizoid Personality Disorder (IM-SZ) exhibited adequate reliability and patterns of correlations with other measures consistent with expe

Personality disorder features as predictors of symptoms five years post-treatment.

Personality disorders are associated with dysfunction in a variety of areas. Recent longitudinal research has shown that personality disorders are also predictive of problems later in life, as well as of poor response to treatment of depression and anxiety. This study assessed whether personality disorder features were associated with psychiatric symptoms in a cohort of women treated for substance abuse in Sweden. Patients were diagnosed with personality disorders using the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV (SCID-II) personality questionnaire and SCID-II interview, and were then adminis

[Autism: exploring historical psychiatric and psychological concepts].

Autism today is a widely used term, yet what is understood by autism has changed considerably since first being introduced in scientific discourse almost 100 years ago. Autism is one example for the influence of the psychoanalytic school of Sigmund Freud on scientific psychiatry at the beginning of the 20th century. In particular psychoanalysis had an impact on Eugen Bleuler's concept of schizophrenia. The Swiss psychiatrist did not only acknowledge and follow a biological, but also a psychological approach to psychiatry and thus opened up his subject to psychoanalytic thoughts. This paper pro

Associations between body weight and personality disorders in a nationally representative sample.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether, in the general population, individuals in numerous abnormal body weight categories had higher odds of having personality disorders (PDs) than normal-weight individuals. Although personality functioning is hypothesized to be associated with body weight, there is a dearth of empirical evaluation of this topic. METHODS: The association of body weight (five categories: underweight [body mass index [BMI] <18.5]; normal [18.5 <or= BMI <25]; overweight [25 <or= BMI <30]; obese [30 <or= BMI <40]; and extremely obese [BMI >or=40]) with personality disorders was investi

[The capacity for mentalization in depressive patients: a pilot study].

OBJECTIVES: Mentalization has been primarily investigated in Borderline Personality Disorders. This pilot study takes the first step toward investigating mentalization in depressive patients. METHODS: First, we present the theoretical background of the concept of mentalization and previous studies. Secondly, we report the results of this pilot study. 20 female inpatients suffering from Major Depressive Disorder were investigated with SKIDI+II, depression-scales (HAM-D, BDI), cognitive tests (TMT, MCVCT), and the Adult Attachment Interview (AAI), rated according to the Reflective Functioning S

Asexuality: a mixed-methods approach.

Current definitions of asexuality focus on sexual attraction, sexual behavior, and lack of sexual orientation or sexual excitation; however, the extent to which these definitions are accepted by self-identified asexuals is unknown. The goal of Study 1 was to examine relationship characteristics, frequency of sexual behaviors, sexual difficulties and distress, psychopathology, interpersonal functioning, and alexithymia in 187 asexuals recruited from the Asexuality Visibility and Education Network (AVEN). Asexual men (n = 54) and women (n = 133) completed validated questionnaires online. Sexual

The heritability of cluster A personality disorders assessed by both personal interview and questionnaire.

BACKGROUND: Personality disorders (PDs) as assessed by questionnaires and personal interviews are heritable. However, we know neither how much unreliability of measurement impacts on heritability estimates nor whether the genetic and environmental risk factors assessed by these two methods are the same. We wish to know whether the same set of PD vulnerability factors are assessed by these two methods. METHOD: A total of 3334 young adult twin pairs from the Norwegian Institute of Public Health Twin Panel (NIPHTP) completed a questionnaire containing 91 PD items. One to 6 years later, 1386 of t
