An important forensic psychiatric measure, contacts with police, was compared in a randomized, controlled trial of 155 patients with severe mental illness with a previous admission within the past two years. The patients, who also had their personality status addressed formally before randomization, were allocated to community multidisciplinary teams or to hospital-based care programs after discharge from in-patient care and were followed up for one year. A total of 138 patients (89%) had at least one post-baseline assessment and of these patients, 16 (12%) had at least one police contact in t

Previous studies have indicated associations between a functional biallelic repetitive element in the 5' regulatory region of the serotonin transporter gene (5-HTTLPR) and alcoholic subjects who have either dissocial personality disorder or severe withdrawal symptoms. To replicate these associations under the hypothesis that genetic polymorphism plays some role in the susceptibility or vulnerability of some subgroup of alcoholics, the associations between alcoholic subjects' genetic polymorphisms, clinical characteristics, and personality traits were examined. This case control study comprised

Outrage of modesty (OOM) offenders cause considerable annoyance and distress to their victims. The offending behaviours include touching, grabbing or fondling of erogenous or non-erogenous parts of the victim's body. The purpose of this study is to examine a prison cohort of OOM offenders and to compare them with a group of OOM offenders who had been remanded in a state mental hospital. All prisoners serving sentence over a two-year study period were interviewed. They were of similar mean age to the hospital cohort but were better educated, more likely to be married and most were working. Vict

There is growing evidence for the validity of the diagnosis of Attention Deficit Hyperkinetic Disorder (ADHD) in adults, as well as evidence that conduct disorder in adolescents and dissocial personality disorder in adult life are linked to ADHD in childhood. Methylphenidate is an effective treatment of ADHD in adolescents and young adults and it is possible that dissocial personality disorder will respond to methylphenidate. There is no evidence that methylphenidate reduces symptoms of conduct disorder in adolescents or of dissocial personality disorder in young adults, because no studies hav

Quantitative trait analyses in mice suggest a vulnerability locus for physiological alcohol withdrawal severity on a chromosomal segment that harbors the genes encoding the alpha1, alpha6, beta2, and gamma2 subunits of the gamma-aminobutyric acid type-A receptor (GABR). We tested whether genetic variation at the human GABA(A) alpha6, beta2, and gamma2 gene cluster on chromosome 5q33 confers vulnerability to alcohol dependence. The genotypes of three nucleotide substitution polymorphisms of the GABRA6, GABRB2, and GABRG2 genes were assessed in 349 German alcohol-dependent subjects and in 182 et

The present association study tested whether genetic variation of the GABAB receptor (GABABR1) gene confers vulnerability to alcohol dependence. The genotypes of three DNA sequence variants in exons 1a1, 7 and 11 of the GABABR1 gene were assessed in 234 German controls and 350 German alcohol-dependent subjects, including three more homogeneous subgroups of alcoholics, marked by (1) history of parental alcoholism (n = 121); (2) history of alcohol withdrawal seizure or delirium (n = 108); and (3) comorbidity of dissocial personality disorder (n = 60). The allele frequencies of none of the invest

BACKGROUND: Involvement of the serotoninergic system (S/S) in alcoholism has been suggested in both mice and humans. Previous studies have suggested the S/S genotype of the serotonin transporter gene promoter polymorphism to be associated with severe alcohol dependence marked by severe withdrawal symptoms. It has also been associated with alcoholics who exhibit a dissocial personality disorder.
METHODS: We examined the polymorphism in 166 Japanese alcoholics who experienced withdrawal seizure or delirium and 290 Japanese controls.
RESULTS: The S/S genotype was not increased in the patients.

BACKGROUND: We tested the hypothesis that a functional biallelic repetitive element in the 5' regulatory region of the human serotonin transporter gene (SLC6A4) confers susceptibility to serotonin-related personality traits underlying alcohol dependence with dissocial behavior.
METHODS: The association study was focused on 64 alcohol-dependent subjects with a dissocial personality disorder (according to ICD-10) who were derived from 315 German alcohol-dependent subjects. The Tridimensional Personality Questionnaire (TPQ) was applied to assess personality dimensions in 101 alcohol-dependent me

A dysfunction of dopaminergic neurotansmission has been implicated in alcohol-seeking behavior. Recently, a significant association between the seven-repeat allele (DRD4*7R) of a 16 amino acid motif in the third exon of the dopamine D4 receptor gene (DRD4) and the personality trait of novelty seeking has been reported. Our population-based association study tested the hypothesis that the DRD4*7R variant predisposes to high levels of novelty seeking, which may underlie alcohol-seeking behavior. The genotypes of the expressed DRD4 exon III polymorphism were determined in 197 German controls and
