Personality disorders and cardiometabolic diseases: A Mendelian randomization study.

Observational studies have suggested the associations between personality disorders (PDs) and cardiometabolic diseases (CMDs), though these may be biased by unmeasured confounding, including lifestyle factors or reverse causality. Mendelian randomization (MR) provides a novel approach to address these limitations by using genetic variants as instrumental variables, thereby minimizing environmental confounding and enabling causal inference. This study leverages MR to systematically evaluate causal relationships across 9 clinically relevant PDs and 8 major CMDs, offering genetic evidence to clar

Psychiatric comorbidities and sexual health risks in HIV-serodiscordant heterosexual couples involving women with borderline personality disorder: a mixed-method study and theoretical modeling.

BACKGROUND: HIV-serodiscordant heterosexual couples consist of one partner who is HIV-positive and the other who is HIV-negative. Our previous studies found that the HIV-negative female partner in no-prevention couples (NPC) may be affected by borderline personality disorder (BPD) and might have a history of child abuse, trauma, and neglect. These couples provide valuable insights into public health, particularly regarding health behaviors and psychosocial factors that influence the relationship between psychopathology, illness behaviors related to borderline personality disorder, and the tran

Development and validation of the Women Autonomy Scale for measuring psychosocial freedom from conventional gender roles.

BACKGROUND: The concepts of masculinity and femininity have historically shaped gender roles, leading to inequality and gender-based discrimination. Women's autonomy, defined as the ability to make independent choices across various life domains, remains inadequately measured by existing scales. This study addresses this gap by developing and validating the Women Autonomy Scale (WAS). METHODS: The development and validation of the WAS involved four phases with a total of 2,252 adult women from Rawalpindi and Islamabad, Pakistan. These phases included exploratory factor analysis (EFA), confirm

Evaluating the Significance of Obesity or Excessive Weight in Various Mental Health Disorders: A Systematic Review.

Obesity is a major global public health challenge affecting all countries and communities. The link between obesity and various types of physical morbidities has been widely acknowledged in different studies. Despite the immense impact of obesity on mental health, its full effect on the areas has not been as explored as the impact on physical health has been. Following an extensive review of various recent studies, the objective of this study is to evaluate the correlations and effects of obesity on mental health disorders, in addition to reflecting on the significance of assessing the correla

Bipolarity of maladaptive personality traits in the alternative model of personality disorders.

It has been posited that extremely high or extremely low levels of any personality trait in the five-factor model can be maladaptive. However, the Alternative Model of Personality Disorders in Section III of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-fifth edition (DSM-5) is composed almost exclusively of unipolar maladaptive traits. The lack of maladaptively low neuroticism and high extraversion fails to fully cover psychopathy; the lack of maladaptively high extraversion fails to cover histrionic personality disorder; the lack of maladaptively high agreeableness fails to cover

Narcissistic and dependent traits and behavior in four archetypal 2-person, 2-choice games.

INTRODUCTION: The characteristic behaviors we use to define personality pathology arise from specific interpersonal interactions. In an effort to create a laboratory-based context in which behavior might be expected to be influenced by particular personality traits, we used four 2-person, 2-choice games (the Prisoner's Dilemma, Chicken, Leader, and Hero games) to create a simulated interaction and focused specifically on narcissism and dependency. METHOD: An online sample of 1137 (35% male, M age = 38.46 years, SD age = 13.20) participants completed brief, self-reported measures of trait narc

Experts' perspectives on the impact of visual impairment and comorbid mental disorders on functioning in essential life domains.

BACKGROUND: Visual impairment (VI) with comorbid mental disorders (MDs) are expected to have a major impact on people's daily functioning, for which tailored support is needed. However, this has been barely investigated. Therefore, this study aimed to (1) determine the impact of VI and comorbid MDs on functioning in essential life domains, (2) gain insight into best-practices that are currently used to support this target group, and (3) determine strategies to optimize care in the future. METHODS: A four-step qualitative Delphi method was used to obtain input from 31 Dutch professionals who w

Working through the body in metacognitive interpersonal therapy to change relational patterns in dependent personality disorder: The case of Lia.

Persons with dependent personality disorder (DPD) have difficulties describing their inner world, and in realizing their negative ideas about the self, such as being weak, unworthy or powerless are just ideas. As a consequence, they tend to over-rely on others and may lose control over their emotions. Treating these persons can gain benefits from including body-focused techniques as they can promote a) awareness of internal states, b) better emotion regulation, c) the capacity to consider their negative ideas about themselves as not necessarily true, and d) gain power of and agency. Management of the therapeutic relationship in a patient with Complex PTSD and Personality Disorder.

Individuals diagnosed with Complex PTSD (C-PTSD) have experienced repeated and often prolonged traumatic events. From a therapeutic perspective this can lead to difficulties in emotion regulation within-session, challenges with patient-therapist attunement, and impaired coregulation of emotions during therapeutic interactions. As a result, frequent therapeutic alliance ruptures can emerge, which in turn pose challenges for symptom-focused work. We describe a case study involving a 38-year-old woman presenting with C-PTSD, dissociation, anxiety and borderline and dependent personality disorder

Personality interferences in the pathology of breast cancer: a cross-sectional single-center study.

Individual personality refers to the Ego and the interpersonal sector. The Ego corresponds to consciousness and self-esteem, including the capacities for emotional self-regulation, self-control, self-evaluation, and self-direction in relation to personal goals. When neoplastic and psychiatric diseases coexist, a patient's quality of life is significantly impacted. While there are somatic differences in disease progression, how the illness is perceived and mainly experienced depends on personality traits. In this study, we administered the DECAS Personality Inventory (a Romanian-validated instr

White and Gray Matter Abnormalities in Young Adult Females with Dependent Personality Disorder: A Diffusion-Tensor Imaging and Voxel-Based Morphometry Study.

We applied diffusion-tensor imaging (DTI) including measurements of fractional anisotropy (FA), a parameter of neuronal fiber integrity, mean diffusivity (MD), a parameter of brain tissue integrity, as well as voxel-based morphometry (VBM), a measure of gray and white matter volume, to provide a basis to improve our understanding of the neurobiological basis of dependent personality disorder (DPD). DTI was performed on young girls with DPD (N = 17) and young female healthy controls (N = 17). Tract-based spatial statistics (TBSS) were used to examine microstructural characteristics. Gray matter

Michelson Interferometer for Global High-Resolution Thermospheric Imaging (MIGHTI) On-Orbit Wind Observations: Data Analysis and Instrument Performance.

BACKGROUND: As the global burden of glaucoma continues to rise, evidence suggests factors beyond intraocular pressure contribute to its pathogenesis. Environmental pollutants are increasingly implicated in ocular disease, yet the association between dichlorophenol exposure and glaucoma remains unexamined. This study addresses this gap by analyzing NHANES data to investigate their relationship, providing new evidence for disease prevention and environmental intervention. METHODS: The data originated from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES, 2005-2008). To explore the c

Personality Pathology and Functional Impairment in Patients With Hypochondriasis.

BACKGROUND: Research indicates substantial co-occurance of personality pathology and hypochondriasis, which both involve significant psychosocial impairment. OBJECTIVE: This study sought to investigate the role of personality pathology for explaining functional impairment in patients with hypochondriasis, while accounting for the influence of health anxiety severity. METHODS: Patients diagnosed with hypochondriasis (N = 84; 60% women) were administered interview- and self-report instruments for personality pathology, health anxiety severity, and functional impairment (general, social, and ph

Exploring the processes of connection and disconnection in imagery work in a patient with depression and dependent personality disorder.

Imagery work is a useful therapeutic tool in the treatment of depression. It is central in different therapeutic approaches, such as cognitive behavioral therapy and compassion-focused therapy. The clinical case of Cynthia is presented. Cynthia started therapy for severe depression associated with social anxiety and dependent personality disorder. At different key moments in the therapy, the proposed change strategies led to ruptures in the therapeutic alliance. For example, difficulties in accepting depression, fears of being judged by the therapist, guided imagery of compassion and work on t

Staphylococcus aureus remains one of the most common and troublesome of bacteria causing disease in humans, despite the development of effective antibacterials and improvement in hygiene. The organism is responsible for over 70% of all skin and soft tissue infections in children and accounts for up to one-fifth of all visits to pediatric clinics. Skin and soft tissue infections that are predominantly caused by S. aureus include bullous and non-bullous impetigo, folliculitis, furunculosis, carbunculosis, cellulitis, surgical and traumatic wound infections, mastitis, and neonatal omphalitis. A Multimethod Investigation of Sex, Romantic Relationships, and Interpersonal Dependency.

An individual's level of interpersonal dependency influences the way they engage with others, and researchers have achieved a comprehensive understanding of the interplay between dependency and interpersonal relationships across an array of social situations. This knowledge has improved the efficacy of medical and psychotherapeutic work with dependent clients and has informed approaches taken to reduce the societal costs of dependent personality disorder (e.g., increased risk for suicide and self-harm, perpetration of child abuse, perpetration of domestic violence, victimization by a partner,

Risk and Protective Factors for Personality Disorders: An Umbrella Review of Published Meta-Analyses of Case-Control and Cohort Studies.

The putative risk/protective factors for several personality disorders remain unclear. The vast majority of published studies has assessed personality characteristics/traits rather than disorders. Thus, the current umbrella review of meta-analyses (MAs) aims to systematically assess risk or protective factors associated with personality disorders. We searched PubMed-MEDLINE/PsycInfo databases, up to August 31, 2020. Quality of MAs was assessed with AMSTAR-2, while the credibility of evidence for each association was assessed through standard quantitative criteria. Out of 571 initial references
