[Personality disorders in a nonclinical sample of adolescents].

OBJECTIVE: To examine the comorbidity of borderline personality disorder and other personality disorders in a nonclinical sample of high-school students. METHOD: 311 high-school students who completed the French version of the CES-D (Center for Epidemiological Studies-Depression Scale), were asked to participate to interviews evaluating personality functioning: 60 subjects (19%) accepted to participate in the study. The mean CES-D score of these 60 subjects (16 boys, 44 girls, mean age=17.7 1.7) was significantly higher than the mean score of the whole sample (23.9 10.4 versus 16.7 9.8). Thus

Interpersonal variability in dependent personality.

The interpersonal circumplex (IPC) was recommended as a personality trait dimensional model with good potential to identify the phenomenological scope of personality disorders whose core dysfunction involves maladaptive expression of interpersonal traits. The IPC was then applied to the reconceptualization of dependent personality and dependent personality disorder. In Study 1, Pincus and Gurtman's (1995) three interpersonal vectors of dependency were validated via factor analyses conducted on two large samples (N = 921; N = 472) and a reliable self-report measure, the 3 Vector Dependency Inve

Gender-related distribution of personality disorders in a sample of patients with panic disorder.

OBJECTIVE: We examined gender differences in the frequency of DSM-IV personality disorder diagnoses in a sample of patients with a diagnosis of panic disorder (PD). METHOD: One hundred and eighty-four outpatients with a principal diagnosis of PD (DSM-IV) were enrolled. All patients were evaluated with a semi-structured interview to collect demographic and clinical data and to generate Axis I and Axis II diagnoses in accordance with DSM-IV criteria. RESULTS: Males were significantly more likely than females to meet diagnoses for schizoid and borderline personality disorder. Compared to males,

Personality characteristics associated with psychological reactance.

This study compared six different personality disorders on level of psychological reactance. Eighty clients met criteria for inclusion in one of six personality disorder groups, including passive-aggressive, dependent, personality disorder NOS (not otherwise specified), no personality disorder, obsessive-compulsive, and borderline. Instruments included the Therapeutic Reactance Scale (TRS) and the Questionnaire for the Measurement of Psychological Reactance (QMPR). Four one-way analyses of variance (ANOVAs) were conducted on the scales and subscales of the two reactance measures. All four ANOV

Pathology versus statistical infrequency: potential sources of gender bias in personality disorder criteria.

The antisocial, narcissistic, dependent, histrionic, and borderline personality disorders often obtain differential sex prevalence rates. One explanation has been that the diagnostic criteria for these personality disorders have different gender implications for maladaptivity (e.g., perhaps the dependent personality disorder diagnostic criteria are considered by clinicians to be more pathological for women than for men). This hypothesis was explored in two studies that obtained judgments by professional clinicians of the maladaptivity and statistical infrequency of personality disorder diagnos

Predictors of pain catastrophizing in women with rheumatoid arthritis.

Catastrophizing has been conceptualized as an appraisal, a cognitive distortion, and a coping mechanism in the psychosocial literature. Regardless of its conceptualization, catastrophizing has been associated with negative psychological and physical outcomes in numerous studies, including our intervention study with 90 women with rheumatoid arthritis. Because of catastrophizing's robust relationship with negative outcomes, predictors of catastrophizing as a pain coping behavior were investigated in this sample, using data collected from two points in time before the intervention. Using Lazarus

Using measures of agreement to develop a taxonomy of passivity in dementia.

A comprehensive taxonomy categorizing passive behaviors in people with dementia was developed and revised through the use of expert raters. The taxonomy was first derived from the synthesis of 15 empirical studies that addressed this phenomenon, then was rated by an expert panel of six nurse-scientists with expertise in dementia and neuroscience research. This article describes the application of two measures of agreement, multiple rater kappa and proportion of agreement for multiple raters, calculated using Stata and SPSS, to evaluate and revise the taxonomy. The method proved useful for esti

Deconstructing dependency in a five-factor world: a meta-analytic review.

Meta-analysis of studies assessing the relation between interpersonal dependency test scores and five-factor model (FFM) domain scores revealed that dependency scores are positively correlated with FFM Neuroticism and Agreeableness scores and negatively correlated with FFM Extraversion, Openness, and Conscientiousness scores. The magnitudes of these correlations were all in the small-to-moderate range, and comparable score intercorrelations were obtained when participants' dependency levels were assessed by means of a trait dependency questionnaire, dependent personality disorder questionnaire

[Role of personality in eating behavior disorders].

Personality disorders are common in eating disorders and preliminary reports indicate that this type of disorders implicate a poor prognosis in anorexia and bulimia nervosa. Cluster C personality disorders, particularly avoidant and dependent personality disorder are the most frequent in anorexia nervosa. In bulimia nervosa, however, cluster B personality disorders, including borderline and histrionic personality disorders, are more frequent. Furthermore, temperament could differentiate anorectic patients from bulimic patients. Eating disorders seem to be associated with high scores in neuroti

The relationship between five-factor personality measurements and ICD-10 personality disorder dimensions: results from a sample of 229 subjects.

This article examines the relationship between the five-factor model (FFM) and dimensional ICD-10 personality disorders. In a follow-up study of a child and adolescent psychiatric cohort, former patients and controls were assessed with NEO-FFI and the IPDE interview (CD-10 personality disorder). Full data were available for 229 subjects (149 former patients, 80 controls). Multiple regression analysis showed that the five factors of the FFM as independent variables explained between 5% (schizoid personality disorder) and 32% (anxious personality disorder) of the variance of ICD-10 dimensional p

[Dependence disorders in psychopathology].

Research concerning the psychopathological aspects of dependence implicates a wide range of behaviors reassembled under the term of "dependence behaviors": sexual, medical, alcoholic and tobacco dependencies. Speech samples of dependent subjects show that encountering the object of dependence (product, element, ...) introduces a particular form of organized psychological processes. According to several authors, psychopathological dependence can be attributed to: early personality development; failures in the separation-individuation processes; disorders in mother-infant interactions; and a def

[Comparative study of the relationship between alexithymia and affective dependence on 60 alcoholics and 57 control subjects].

UNLABELLED: Several authors have shown that alexithymia characterizes patients suffering from substance abuses. Moreover emotional and perceptual dependencies have also been described in these disorders. The aim of this study is to test two hypotheses: First that the emotional components of alexithymia and dependency were linked in alcoholics and secondly that the cognitive components of these two dimensions were also linked in these subjects. Two groups were recruited: 60 inpatients filled out the DSM IV criteria for alcohol dependence and 57 healthy subjects were the controls. All the subjec

Patients with personality disorder admitted to secure forensic psychiatry services.

BACKGROUND: Treatment of patients with personality disorder remains controversial and severe mental illness is prioritized in secure forensic psychiatry services. AIMS: To compare patients with personality disorder and mental illness according to demography, referral, criminality, previous institutionalisation and diagnostic comorbidity. METHOD: A record survey of 511 patients with personality disorder and 2575 with mental illness admitted to secure forensic psychiatry services between 1 January 1988 and 31 December 1994 from half of England and Wales. RESULTS: Personality disorder admissio

Assumptions in borderline personality disorder: specificity, stability and relationship with etiological factors.

The specificity and stability of a set of assumptions hypothesized to be characteristic of Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) was investigated. BPD patients (n = 16) were compared to cluster-C personality disorder patients (n = 12) and to normal controls (n = 15). All subjects were female and diagnosed with SCID-I and -II. Subjects rated a short version of the Personality Disorder Beliefs Questionnaire (PDBQ), with six sets of 20 assumptions each, hypothesized to be characteristic of avoidant, dependent, obsessive-compulsive, paranoid, histrionic and borderline personality disorder. The BPD

Frequency of personality disorders in two age cohorts of psychiatric inpatients.

OBJECTIVE: The authors examined the frequency of DSM-III-R personality disorders in adolescent and young adult psychiatric inpatients. METHOD: Structured diagnostic interviews were reliably performed with a series of 255 consecutively admitted inpatients (138 adolescents and 117 young adults). RESULTS: Most personality disorders were diagnosed in similar frequencies in the two study groups. Passive-aggressive personality disorder was diagnosed with lower frequency and dependent personality disorder with higher frequency in the young adult than in the adolescent group. CONCLUSIONS: The isomo

Depression and dependency: distinct or overlapping constructs?

BACKGROUND: Previous research has found a significant positive relationship between dependency and level of depression. The aim of the present study, using factor analysis method, is to test the hypothesis that dependency and depression constitute distinct dimensions. METHODS: In a sample of 202 university students, a correlation matrix comprising items from both the Interpersonal Dependency Inventory and the abridged form of the Beck Depression Inventory was analysed using a principal components analysis followed by an orthogonal varimax rotation. RESULTS: Evidence for a four-factor solutio

Depathologizing dependency.

For nearly a century psychologists, psychiatrists, and other mental health professionals have emphasized the maladaptive, problematic aspects of dependent personality traits. In this article, I review theoretical frameworks that have played a key role in pathologizing dependency, and then describe empirical findings which indicate that dependency is not simply a flaw or deficit in functioning but is also associated with a variety of healthy, adaptive traits, and behaviors. The theoretical, empirical, and clinical implications of depathologizing dependency are discussed.

Longitudinal study of interpersonal dependency in female twins.

BACKGROUND: Interpersonal dependence is thought to be important in a number of physical and psychological disorders. There are several developmental theories that suggest environmental influences in childhood are important. METHOD: A twin study methodology was used to look at the genetic and environmental influences on interpersonal dependence as measured by a sub-scale of the Interpersonal Dependency Inventory with a population-based sample of 2230 twins. RESULTS: Psychometric analysis revealed that this was a stable measure and that there was a substantial degree of construct validity. Bot
