Heart rate variability, serum cortisol levels and temperament in a sample of workers exposed to occupational stress: a preliminary report.

Work-related stress is an emerging risk for psychiatric occupational disorders including Adjustment Disorders (AD). The aim of this study was to investigate in workers exposed to occupational stress suffering from AD about putative indices of stress and mental health resilience such as serum cortisol (seC) levels, Heart Rate Variability (HRV) and affective temperaments. We consecutively recruited 15 male and 15 female AD patients between workers evaluated for occupational stress at an Italian Occupational Medicine Unit. SeC levels were measured by specific immunoassay. HRV indices were recorde

Functional neurologic disorders in an adult with propionic acidemia: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Inborn errors of metabolism are often characterized by various psychiatric syndromes. Previous studies tend to classify psychiatric manifestations into clinical entities. Among inborn errors of metabolism, propionic acidemia (PA) is a rare inherited organic aciduria that leads to neurologic disabilities. Several studies in children with PA demonstrated that psychiatric disorders are associated to neurological symptoms. To our knowledge, no psychopathological description in adult with propionic acidemia is available. CASE PRESENTATION: We aimed to compare the case of a 53-year-old

Transdisciplinary Approach in Type I Neurofibromatosis - Review of Psychiatric Disorders.

BACKGROUND: Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is an autosomal dominant a multisystem genetic disorder that primarily involves the skin and the nervous system. The incidence of the disease is 1:3000-4000 live-born children, equally in both sexes. The diagnosis of NF1 is determined individually with any two of the following clinical features: café-au-lait spots, intertriginous freckling, Lisch nodules, neurofibromas, optic glioma, distinctive bone lesions and first-degree family relative with NF1. NF1 is a disease most commonly diagnosed and treated by neuropediatricians. RESULTS: Cognitive and be

MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed a transversal study in all patients diagnosed with definite MD in our department during a 5-year period. Sample subjects were interviewed in 3 steps: first, an otorhinolaryngolo

Inpatients with severe-enduring anorexia nervosa: Understanding the "enduringness" specifier.

BACKGROUND: Despite the need for a common definition of severe and enduring anorexia nervosa (SE-AN) with the overarching goal to optimize treatments, this definition still is being debated. Therefore, in this study we conducted an in-depth investigation of the history of AN and its clinical outcomes on inpatients with AN to ascertain the eventual "profiles" for individuals with varying durations of the illness (DOI). METHODS: We recruited 169 inpatients with AN, grouping them according to DOI: <3 years (short duration, SD-AN); 3-6.99 years (medium duration, MD-AN); and ≥7 years (long duratio

Psychiatric comorbidities in adult patients with epilepsy (A systematic review).

The co-occurrence of epilepsy and psychiatric disorders is long known. The scope of this systematic review was to describe the prevalence of specific interictal psychiatric disorders in patients with epilepsy and to assess possible associations between psychiatric disorders and other sociodemographic or clinical characteristics of epilepsy patients. MEDLINE and ScienceDirect were searched for original articles published between January 2015 and February 2021 describing studies that involved epilepsy patients with psychiatric comorbidities. We identified 13 studies with heterogenous methodology

Psychometric Properties of the Independent 36-Item PID5BF+M for ICD-11 in the Czech-Speaking Community Sample.

Background: Empirical soundness and international robustness of the PID5BF+M, a shortened version of the PID-5 developed for simultaneous evaluation of maladaptive personality traits in the DSM-5 AMPD and ICD-11 models for personality disorders, was recently confirmed in 16 samples from different countries. Because the modified PID5BF+ scale (36 items) was extracted from the complete 220-item PID-5, an independent evaluation of psychometric properties of a stand-alone PID5BF+M is still missing. Objectives: The present study evaluated the validity and reliability of the 36-item PID5BF+M in comp

[Hysteria: history of a concept and its clinical reality].

Hysteria is one of the oldest and best known clinical terms. Its history reveals the extent to which pathological entities, some more than others, are the fruit of successive conceptions of experts, themselves undoubtedly influenced by the prevailing currents of thought of their time. From its uterine origin to its psychogenic etiology, here is the history of hysteria and its controversies. A history that belongs to that of medicine, neurology, psychiatry, psychology and psychoanalysis.

Relationships of affective temperament ratings to diagnosis and morbidity measures in major affective disorders.

BACKGROUND: Ratings of affective temperament types show promise in helping to differentiate diagnostic groups among major affective disorders as well as to predict associations with important aspects of morbidity including suicidal risk. "Transition" to Schizophrenia or Fluctuations within the Same Disorder?

BACKGROUND: To prevent or delay the onset of psychotic disorders or ameliorate their course, prodromal research has strived to identify and treat individuals at risk of developing psychosis. While this approach is laudable, it is, however, not entirely unproblematic from clinical and conceptual perspectives. For example, it remains unclear how we are to understand the development from a nonpsychotic, distressing condition such as schizotypal disorder to a psychotic disorder such as schizophrenia? The current terminology on the subject implies either a nonlinear jump ("conversion") or a more li

[History of the formation of views on schizotypal disorder in childhood].

The article reflects the stages of development of views on schizotypal disorder (STD) in adults and children from the prenosological period to the present. It is shown how, after the recognition by the majority of psychiatrists of the concept of early dementia proposed by E. Kraepelin, there is a gradual recognition of the single essence of schizophrenia for childhood and adulthood, but with different, specific clinical manifestations at different age periods. The study of variants of schizophrenia without a fatal outcome in dementia, which led to the isolation of sluggish schizophrenia, inclu
