The network structure of personality functioning and maladaptive traits in adolescents.

Despite evidence for the onset of personality disorder (PD) during adolescence, few studies have examined the internal structure of the alternative model for PDs in youth. Network analysis offers a valuable alternative to factor analytic approaches by modeling the unique associations among observed indicators, allowing for identification of central features within the network of personality pathology. This preregistered, cross-sectional study used network analysis to examine links between maladaptive personality trait domains and level of personality functioning (LPF) in adolescents to identif

Further validation of the MMPI-3 personality disorder syndrome scales in a community mental health sample.

The purpose of the present study was to replicate and extend research on the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-3 (MMPI-3) Personality Disorder (PD) Syndrome scales. A total of 289 participants were recruited from the community in Dunedin, New Zealand-all of whom were engaged in mental health treatment. We evaluated the validity of the PD Syndrome scales against various measures of traditional PDs, personality traits, and personality dysfunction using self-report, clinical-rating, and informant-report criteria. The findings provide support for the criterion validity of the MMPI-3 PD s

The three-factor model of psychopathic traits: Analyses using undirected and Bayesian network modeling.

Psychopathic traits have attracted increasing research interest due to their associations with antisocial behaviors and emotional dysfunctions; however, their structure and defining characteristics remain debated. This study investigated the network architecture of psychopathic traits-operationalized using the three-factor model-by applying regularized partial correlation network (RPCN) and Bayesian network analyses to data from 13,807 adults (50.5 % male) recruited via cluster convenience sampling. Psychopathic traits were assessed using the Levenson Self-Report Psychopathy Scale (LSRP). Resu

Honoré de Balzac's Story of Vanda de Mergi: The First Modern Case of Neurologic Functional Disorder?

Modern case descriptions of functional neurologic disorders ("hysteria") date mainly from Jean-Martin Charcot and his followers, among whom Sigmund Freud emphasized sexual factors. In his last novel (L'initié), published in 1848, half a century before Charcot and Freud, Honoré de Balzac reported, with surprising modernity, the case of Vanda de Mergi, a young woman who had a complex disorder characterized by attacks of weakness and contractures, abnormal movements, and other manifestations including hound-like barking. Contrary to current medical reports, he described the patient's feelings and

Effectiveness of a Mobile-Based Self-Regulation Training on Youths' Affect.

Background: The rising prevalence and enduring impact of mental health problems in youth have intensified the call for population-level prevention. Low positive and high negative affect in childhood are vulnerability factors for mental health problems in adolescence. Supporting youth in managing affect during early adolescence may foster mental health preventively. Self-regulation training has shown promise in this regard. Moreover, its parallels with Behavioral Activation (BA) align with the recommendation to adapt evidence-based clinical interventions into scalable, accessible formats for pr

Overlapping symptoms of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism, and personality disorder in a community sample.

OBJECTIVES: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism, and personality disorder (PD) often present with overlapping symptom profiles, complicating diagnostic assessment and treatment planning. Yet, few studies have examined the extent and nature of these overlaps, or the mechanisms that may underpin them. The current study aimed to address this gap by investigating overlapping symptom profiles of ADHD, autism, and PD, and the potential transdiagnostic mechanisms contributing to such in a community sample. DESIGN AND METHODS: A total of 512 adults with a history of mental health

Association between pet ownership and mental health in university students with borderline personality disorder symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Approximately 9.7% of university students exhibit symptoms of borderline personality disorder (BPD), characterized by disturbed self-identity, low self-esteem, and emotion dysregulation. Caring for a pet may enhance self-esteem and provide a sense of purpose, potentially benefiting those with BPD. METHODS: This study aimed to explore the relationship between pet ownership and mental health in 346 university students with BPD symptoms. Participants were classified as pet owners or non-pet owners. Mental health outcomes were assessed using validated self-report instruments, including

Network Analysis of Triarchic Psychopathy Measure (TriPM) and Other Self Report Measures of Psychopathy.

INTRODUCTION: Network analysis is a statistical tool for understanding interrelations between symptoms and the relative importance of symptoms in a disorder. This is especially appealing to psychopathy researchers, as network analysis may provide some insights that bring the field closer to resolving debates about psychopathy-relevant features. METHODS: In the present study (N = 612), we first conducted network analysis on the Triarchic Psychopathy Measure (TriPM) and subsequently conducted a scale-level analysis of psychopathic traits from seven psychopathy inventories. RESULTS: In the TriP

Perceptual organization and its visual subcomponents in schizophrenia and schizotypy: A systematic review.

Perceptual organization (PO) deficits have long been considered a hallmark of schizophrenia (SZ), reflecting disruptions in the integration of visual information. This systematic review critically evaluates the behavioral evidence for PO impairments in SZ and individuals with high schizotypal traits, focusing on three key mid-level processes: contour integration, perceptual grouping, and figure-ground segmentation. Forty-four studies were included, identified through a systematic search and evaluated for bias using the QUADAS-2 tool. Findings reveal robust and replicable deficits in contour in

Borderline personality mediates the link between attachment insecurities and subjective working memory deficits: The role of pre-emptive and post-emptive strategies.

Individuals with attachment insecurities, particularly attachment anxiety, often report subjective working memory deficits (SWMD). However, the psychological mechanisms underlying this relationship remain poorly understood. In this project, we propose that borderline personality disorder (BPD) features help explain this link. We tested this model across three studies, including one preregistered study, conducted with Russian, Turkish, and Polish samples. In Study 1, both attachment anxiety and avoidance predicted SWMD, with the former effect being stronger than the latter. The indirect effects

Measuring Interpersonal Style and Level of Personality Functioning with the Picture Frustration Study's Narrative Contents: A Pilot Study on the New Collaborative Scoring Method (COSMO) Coding System.

The COllaborative Scoring MethOd (COSMO) is a promising new coding system applicable on the Picture Frustration Study, rooted in the Interpersonal perspective and collaborative assessment framework. The COSMO system includes two levels of coding. First, it allows the coding of interpersonal styles based on four quadrants resulting from the combination of Agency and Communion variables. Second, COSMO assesses the severity of personality pathology. This pilot study shows preliminary data on the reliability and validity of COSMO applied to Picture Frustration Study responses. Results in a mixed-s

Understanding Barriers in Personality Disorder Services During the Transition From CAMHS: A Service Evaluation.

Around 25,000 young people (YP) transition to Adult Mental Health Services (AMHS) from Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) annually in the United Kingdom. A small percentage experience all the key features of an effective transition-with suboptimal transitions potentially contributing to disengagement as YP approach or undergo the transition. Semistructured interviews were conducted with five YP, five CAMHS practitioners and seven AMHS practitioners working in the Personality Disorder Community Service (PDCS) to ascertain the barriers to engagement during the transition process
