Peer support for people with borderline personality disorder (BPD) holds promise to support recovery and reduce distress, but few BPD peer support programs have been developed or evaluated. We describe the design and implementation of a novel stakeholder-driven initiative to build a peer-led online support group for people with BPD. This manuscript does not present a traditional research study or follow an implementation science framework. Instead, it documents a radical, community-led model of care development-one that expands the possibilities for stakeholder-led innovation in mental health

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are a well-established risk factor for a wide range of mental health conditions, including personality disorder (PD). Yet, few studies have explored the relationship between ACEs and dimensional models of PD using the ICD-11 framework. The current study aimed to address this gap by establishing risk estimates and examining the potential dose-response relationship between ACEs and PD severity. A total of 918 adults with a history of mental health treatment residing in the United States or United Kingdom completed self-report questionnaires assessing ACE expo

OBJECTIVES: This study examines the continuity and comparability of internalizing and externalizing symptom spectra from adolescence to young adulthood, addressing measurement challenges across developmental stages. Leveraging the Hierarchical Taxonomy of Psychopathology (HiTOP) framework, it explores whether symptom spectra in adolescence predict corresponding symptoms in young adulthood.
METHODS: Data were drawn from JEPSY, a follow-up of the national KiGGS cohort (N = 2172, age 18-26). Adolescent internalizing and externalizing symptoms were assessed via the Strengths and Difficulties Ques

BACKGROUND: Personality Disorders that meet the criteria for a Severe Mental Illness (SMI-PD) tend to coincide with a greatly reduced quality of life and a lower life expectancy. Despite the numerous and complex needs of patients with SMI-PD, effective treatments for this group have not yet been established. Traditional treatments often fail to address the multitude of problems patients with SMI-PD struggle with and there is limited understanding about the treatment needs and effects. SMI-PD is associated with high economic costs to both the individual and society. Adaptive Mentalization-based

Our study aimed to investigate the relationship between episodic memory, memory complaints, and personality traits (openness to experience and neuroticism) as a function of age. Using a cross-sectional design with a multimodal assessment of episodic memory, we compared three groups of adults (young, middle-aged, and older). We examined age effects on both objective and subjective measures of memory, as well as on openness and neuroticism. Our results revealed an age effect only on the objective measures. Furthermore, associations between memory and personality differed by age group. In young a

BACKGROUND: Moral injury (MI) is a potential clinical problem associated with distress following exposure to potentially morally injurious events (PMIEs). While previous studies have linked PMIEs to MI outcomes such as shame and trust violation, few have examined the role of pre-enlistment personality traits in predicting MI. This study investigates whether pre-deployment aggression contributes to MI outcomes among recently discharged Israeli combat veterans, both directly and indirectly, through exposure to PMIEs.
DESIGN: A six-year longitudinal study.
METHODS: 169 Israeli combat veterans w

INTRODUCTION: Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) affects 1 to 3% of the general population and up to 20% of psychiatric inpatients. It is characterized by emotional dysregulation, impaired interpersonal relationships, and impulsive behaviors. This systematic review aims to identify psychopathological mechanisms, comorbidities, and gender differences associated with violence in BPD.
METHODS: This review followed PRISMA guidelines and included studies published in English or French with no time restriction. Literature searches were conducted in PubMed and Ovid using the search equation: ((vi

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) and eating disorders (EDs) are often comorbid and share a core feature of emotion dysregulation (EDys). While diet has been linked to mental health, its relationship with EDys and symptom severity in these groups remains understudied. This study investigated dietary intake in BPD, EDs, and their comorbidity, and examined whether EDys mediates the relationship between diet and symptom severity. Female inpatients with BPD (n = 40), ED (n = 22), and BPD with comorbid ED (BPD + ED; n = 37), along with healthy controls (HCs; n = 37) completed Food Frequency Que

Night shift work can impair attention and increase biomarkers linked to neurodegenerative processes. Understanding factors that influence resilience to, or vulnerability under, sleep loss is therefore essential for identifying groups at particular risk. In this within-subjects study, we examined two potential modulators of vulnerability in 54 healthy, naturally cycling women aged 21-33 years: the ovarian hormone estradiol, known for its neuroprotective properties and the personality trait neuroticism, previously associated with stress sensitivity. Participants completed one night of habitual s

This study developed and validated a mini (4-item) version of the Level of Personality Functioning Scale-Brief Form 2.0 (LPFS-BF 2.0) to assess personality functioning as defined in the DSM-5 Alternative Model for Personality Disorders. Two samples were used: a U.S. clinical sample (N = 700) and a Dutch mixed clinical sample (N = 298). In the U.S. sample, participants completed the LPFS-BF 2.0, the Big Five Inventory-2-Extra-Short Form, and several mental health measures. Item combinations that spanned each of the four LPFS elements were evaluated using confirmatory factor analyses and graded

Body dissatisfaction (BD) is well-studied in eating disorder (ED) populations but remains unexplored in dual diagnosis (DD) populations, such as co-occurring ED and substance use disorder. This cross-sectional study compared BD levels between ED and DD groups and examined the influence of personality traits. Sixty-five female patients with either an ED (n = 39; Mage = 26.8, SD = 8.8) or DD (n = 26; Mage = 28.9, SD = 8.4) completed standardized measures of BD and personality traits. Descriptive statistics, group comparisons, and linear regression analyses were conducted. BD levels did not signi

Borderline personality disorder traits (BPD traits) represent subclinical characteristics associated with borderline personality disorder (BPD), which are marked by impaired cognitive control of emotion processing. Although the cognitive control deficit of negative emotions is a core feature of BPD, the characteristics and neural basis of this deficit in non-clinical BPD traits individuals remain unclear. The present study employed a novel facial majority function task (fMFT) combined with event-related potential (ERP) recording to explore the cognitive control of negative facial emotion under

Behavioural, structural, and functional neuroimaging differences exist between individuals with antisocial personality disorder with (ASPD + P) or without psychopathy (ASPD-P). However, the aetiological mechanisms underpinning such differences remain unclear, hindering treatment development. Intranasal oxytocin (OT) has shown modulatory effects on social brain function in healthy and antisocial populations. We investigated the effects of OT on resting-state brain function in individuals with violent offending histories with ASPD+/-P using arterial spin labelling to measure regional cerebral bl

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Approximately one-quarter of the global population experiences mental disorders, with onset frequently occurring during adolescence. Low mental health literacy (MHL) is a crucial barrier to help-seeking. Although extraversion, social support, and psychological help-seeking all facilitate access to mental health information, their combined and sequential roles in influencing MHL remain underexplored. Using the Capability, Opportunity, Motivation, and Behavior (COM-B) model, this study examined the serial mediating roles of social support and psychological help-seeking in the

Patients with a personality disorder are frequently encountered in clinical settings, and their treatment often poses unique clinical dilemmas given specific features of the illness and treatment landscapes that are commonly austere. The past few decades have seen the emergence of new models for conceptualizing personality disorders and several new evidence-based treatments. However, the question of which patient should be matched to which treatment, and when, is a significantly under-investigated topic. We propose that one important component of answering this question is considering readines

The Alternative DSM-5 Model for Personality Disorders (AMPD) was introduced in the Fifth Edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders as a dimensional alternative to the traditional categorical model. Despite considerable research, systematic implementation in clinical practice has remained limited. This article reports on the implementation of the AMPD in an institution that specializes in the assessment and treatment of personality disorders to offer guidance for other teams considering the adoption of the AMPD. Implementation involved developing a multimethod assessm

AIM OF THE STUDY: Anxiety about dental treatment is one of the main barriers to accessing dental services and, at the same time, a well-known problem for dentists. The main objective of this observational pilot study was to assess the prevalence and determinants of dental anxiety and severe forms compatible with dental phobia among adult dental patients and to explore their association with psychological distress, as well as patients' preferences for methods to reduce pain and anxiety during dental treatment.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We carried out a pilot observational study using two well-est
