Personality Traits and Sociodemographic Correlates in Saudi Arabia: A DSM-5 AMPD Criterion B Study Using the PID-5-BF.

Introduction: Personality disorders are enduring, maladaptive patterns that impair social and vocational functioning. The DSM-5 Alternative Model for Personality Disorders (AMPD) distinguishes Criterion A (personality functioning: identity, self-direction, empathy, intimacy) from Criterion B (maladaptive trait domains: negative affectivity, detachment, antagonism, disinhibition, psychoticism). We frame this study within Criterion B, supporting the use of a dimensional approach that complements (rather than replaces) normative models like the Five-Factor Model (FFM) and addresses cross-cultural

Exploring Gender Differences in Adolescent Psychiatric Disorders: A Decade of Research.

Background: Adolescence is a developmental phase characterised by profound biological, emotional and social changes and these changes make adolescents particularly vulnerable to the emergence of psychiatric disorders. In this context, gender differences in mental health disorders are of increasing clinical interest. Method: We conducted a scoping review of the literature regarding gender differences in psychiatric disorders during adolescence. Three databases, PubMed, Web of Science and EBSCO, were used to identify articles published in English from 2015 until 2025. Twenty-one studies fulfille

Assessing Vulnerable and Antagonistic Traits Using the Five-Factor Model Measures.

In this preregistered study, we evaluated whether the Five-Factor Model Antagonistic Triad Measure (FFM ATM) can adequately capture both traditional and vulnerable expressions of socially aversive ("Dark Triad") personality traits. In a sample of 326 university students aged 18 to 24 (M = 18.39, SD = 0.85), we administered the FFM ATM, the Five-Factor Borderline Inventory-Super Short Form (FFBI-SSF), the Levenson Self-Report Psychopathy Scale, the Hypersensitive Narcissism Scale, the McLean Screening Instrument for Borderline Personality Disorder, and the Short Dark Triad. The FFM ATM accounte

Internal structure and factorial invariance of the Patient Health Questionnaire -9 (PHQ-9) in a large Argentinean sample.

BACKGROUND: Depression is one of the most prevalent psychological disorders and the leading cause of disability worldwide. The development of effective strategies for the prevention and treatment of depression requires valid and reliable instruments capable of accurately assessing this condition. The present study examined the internal structure and measurement invariance of the Patient Health Questionnaire–9 (PHQ-9) in an Argentine population. METHODS: Several measurement models proposed in the international literature were tested in a large Argentine sample (N = 5,950), comprising three inde

A Latent Structural Comparison Between the Circumplex Scales of Interpersonal Problems (CSIP) and the Inventory of Interpersonal Problems (IIP-C).

This study investigates differences in measuring interpersonal problems using two established instruments: the Circumplex Scales of Interpersonal Problems (CSIP) and the Inventory of Interpersonal Problems (IIP-C). We developed a German translation of the CSIP and compared it to the German IIP-C in a community sample representative of the German general population regarding age and gender (NT1 = 677, NT2 = 514). To compare the two instruments, we used the extension to the circular stochastic process model for the circumplex (SPMC-E). This method makes it possible to map the scales from one ins

Evaluation of health behaviors and Type D personality traits among physiotherapy students in relation to musculoskeletal disorder symptoms.

INTRODUCTION: Existing literature lacks studies evaluating the role of health behaviors and Type D personality in relation to musculoskeletal disorder symptoms. This study is the first to analyze these factors, specifically targeting a group at heightened risk of motor system disorders in their future professional roles-physiotherapy students. AIM: To assess health behaviors, prevalence of Type D personality, perceived stress levels, and depression in the context of musculoskeletal disorder symptoms among physiotherapy students. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study included 100 students (2nd- an

The Relation Between Childhood Experiences and Borderline Personality Symptoms in Non-Clinical Population. The Role of Dissociative Experiences and Invalidating Environment.

The aim of the present study was to identify the relationships between traumatic, as well as benevolent childhood experiences and borderline personality symptoms in a non-clinical sample. We also explored the mediating role of dissociative experiences and the moderating role of parental invalidating environments between traumatic, respectively benevolent childhood experiences and borderline personality symptoms. A sample of 326 non-clinical Romanian adults were included in the present study (Mage = 25.58, SD = 6.63). The participants completed scales for measuring childhood experiences, dissoc

Systematic review and meta-analysis of intranasal esketamine for treatment-resistant depression: Evidence from real-world studies.

BACKGROUND: Intranasal esketamine has demonstrated efficacy and safety for treatment-resistant depression in randomized controlled trials, however the generalizability of these findings to clinical practice remains unclear. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to synthesize real-world evidence of intranasal esketamine in patients with treatment-resistant depression. METHODS: A systematic search was conducted in PubMed, Embase, and PsycINFO up to April 2025 to identify observational studies reporting clinical outcomes of intranasal esketamine in adults with treatment-resistant depres

The individual and dyadic roles of neuroticism and conscientiousness in cardiac autonomic functioning of patients with cancer and their spousal caregivers.

Poor cardiovascular health is prevalent among patients with cancer and their spousal caregivers, partly due to cancer-related stress. This study examined the roles of neuroticism and conscientiousness, two stress regulatory tendencies, in heart rate variability (HRV; RMSSD) among patient-caregiver dyads. Patients newly diagnosed with colorectal cancer (N = 141, 56.33 years old, 34 % female, 64.54 Hispanic) and their spousal caregivers (N = 139, 55.46 years old, 62.77 % female, 62.77 % Hispanic) completed personality measures individually and underwent a laboratory stress task together, while c

Measurement and Correlates of Peer Social Support During Brief Psychiatric Treatment: The Fellow Travelers in Treatment Scale.

OBJECTIVES: Many forms of psychiatric treatment include social experiences as part of treatment. Patients often have both formal and informal opportunities to interact with their peers while receiving treatment in settings such as residential, inpatient, and partial hospital levels of care. However, patients' perceptions of these formal and informal social encounters are not routinely assessed in clinical care or clinical research, and the extent to which these social experiences are related to positive or negative outcomes during treatment is unclear. METHODS: The authors developed a 19-item

Interpersonal Outcomes of Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and Borderline Personality Disorder: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Severe interpersonal difficulties are central to both complex posttraumatic stress disorder (CPTSD) and borderline personality disorder (BPD), two trauma-related disorders with substantial clinical overlap. Whether their relational impairments reflect shared or distinct profiles remains an open question. To address this, we conducted a systematic review and three-level meta-analysis of 92 studies (20 on CPTSD, N = 9,657; 72 on BPD, N = 17,842) reporting associations with interpersonal problems. Medium-to-large effects were observed for both CPTSD (r = .48, 95% CI [0.37, 0.58]) and BPD (r = .39

Understanding mental health discourse on Reddit with transformers and explainability.

Social media is a powerful tool also for discussing mental health. The conversations that take place in these spaces provide a unique insight into how users talk about the issue. This study uses fine-tuned pretrained transformer models (BERT and MentalBERT), to classify Reddit posts about anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder and borderline personality disorder (BPD) in specialised subreddits. By assessing how well subreddit conversations align with their intended mental health focus, the analysis ensures that these communities are effectively serving their purpose as support spaces. Our class

Facial emotion recognition, empathy & psychopathic traits: understanding differential effects of measures.

BACKGROUND: Empathy, encompassing affective and cognitive components, is considered fundamental to understanding psychopathic traits and its relationship with facial emotion recognition. Nonetheless, existing evidence is inconsistent, reflecting variability in measurement approaches and limited use of ecologically valid tasks. METHODS: We examined associations between empathy, psychopathic traits, and facial emotion recognition in 227 participants. Empathy was assessed using both self-report (Questionnaire of Cognitive and Affective Empathy; QCAE) and performance-based measures (Multifaceted E

Impaired Processing of Bodily Signals Is Associated With Borderline Personality Traits: Insights From the Predictive Coding Model.

Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is marked by emotional instability and intense negative affect. The Predictive Coding Model posits that impaired prediction of bodily signals may underlie such deficits, though empirical validation remains lacking. In this study, we compared a high BPD-trait group (score ≥ 6 on the Chinese Version of the McLean Screening Instrument for BPD, without a BPD diagnosis) with a low BPD-trait group (score ≤ 2). Participants were examined using the Multidimensional Assessment of Interoceptive Awareness-2 (MAIA-2) for interoceptive sensitivity (IS), the Heartbeat C

Psychopathology profiles and longitudinal correlates of nonsuicidal self-injury in youth: a machine-learning approach.

Nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) in youth is clinically heterogeneous. We aimed to identify distinct psychopathology-based profiles among children and adolescents reporting NSSI and their longitudinal correlates. Participants (N = 1 345) were drawn from the Brazilian High-Risk Cohort Study, which conducted extensive phenotypic assessments at baseline (ages 6-14 years) and across two follow-up waves (ages 9-18 and 13-23 years). First, we applied unsupervised machine-learning algorithms (Self-Organizing Maps and k-means clustering) to identify distinct psychopathology-based profiles among youth re

Predicting Job Performance in the Nonprofit Sector: The Role of Self-Efficacy and Type D Personality Traits in Greek Non-governmental Organization Employees.

BACKGROUND: Job performance (JP) in non-governmental organizations (NGOs) is shaped by both facilitating and inhibiting psychological factors. While self-efficacy (SE) enhances motivation and task execution, Type D personality, characterized by negative affectivity (NA) and social inhibition (SI), has been associated with poor work outcomes. However, limited research has examined these variables in nonprofit environments. This study aimed to explore the predictive role of SE and Type D personality on in-role and extra-role job performance among NGO employees in Greece. OBJECTIVE: This study e

Differences in height, weight, and BMI in patients with mood disorders, schizophrenia, and other mental disorders vs. normal controls.

INTRODUCTION: The literature suggests differences in the body between the general population and patients with mental disorders. The current study aimed to search for differences between healthy controls and patients with mental disorders in terms of body height, weight, BMI, and Body surface area (BSA). MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study sample included 788 healthy control subjects, 76 patients with unipolar depression, 36 with Bipolar disorder, 16 patients with schizoaffective disorder, 122 patients with schizophrenia, and 78 patients with other mental disorders (a mixture of severe forms of O

Could the telescoping effect and comorbidity with substance use disorders account for sex differences in the processes and therapeutic outcomes? A latent-class moderation analysis.

BACKGROUND: Sex differences in substance use disorder (SUD) treatment outcomes remain unclear; protocols focused on male prevalence may overlook female-specific needs. This study tested interactions among sex, the telescoping effect, and comorbid profiles in outcomes. METHODS: Retrospective multisite electronic health record study (N = 4818) of patients with co-occurring disorders. Interaction regressions and latent class analysis tested sex moderation of links between years of substance use (telescoping) and outcomes within SUD and co-occurring diagnostic groups. RESULTS: Slower progression

Predicting suicide in patients who have received acute psychiatric inpatient treatment - the longitudinal and prospective SIPEA study.

Suicidality (suicidal ideation and -plans (SI) and deliberate self-harm (DSH)), has been extensively studied in different patient populations. Fewer studies have examined predictors of suicide within an extensive longitudinal frame, which is problematic since findings from studies including participants with non-lethal suicidal behavior are not easily generalizable to patients that complete suicide. We aimed to address this gap by examining demographic and clinical factors as predictors of suicide in a longitudinal prospective cohort study of 7,000 consecutively admitted patients. Mean observa

Using a Multicomponent Implementation Strategy to Increase Adoption and Effectiveness of a Universal Mental Health Prevention Program in Australian Primary Schools: a Cluster Randomized Trial Using a Type-3 Hybrid Design.

It has been demonstrated in multiple randomized trials that the PAX Good Behavior Game is an effective school-based program for reducing the severity and progression of childhood emotional and behavioral problems that are prognostic of mental disorders, personality disorders, and self-harm behavior in adolescence and early adulthood. Embedding effective programs into routine practices of frontline settings is a global priority for mental health prevention, however, little is known about what strategies effectively support program implementation in schools. The purpose of this study was to test
