The role of noninfectious comorbidities in the association between severe infections and risk of dementia in Finland: A nationwide registry study.

BACKGROUND: Severe infections have been linked to an increased risk of dementia, but both conditions often coexist with other illnesses that may confound this association. Using nationwide Finnish health registry data, we examined the role of noninfectious mental and physical illnesses in the association between severe infections and dementia. METHODS AND FINDINGS: This register-based study included 62,555 individuals aged 65 or older in Finland in 2016 who were diagnosed with late-onset dementia between 2017 and 2020 and 312,772 dementia-free controls matched for year of birth, sex, and the

Phage therapy in the management of respiratory and pulmonary infections: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Lower respiratory tract infections (LRTIs) pose a significant threat to global health, causing more than 2 million deaths worldwide. This menace is intensified by the alarming increase in drug resistance, which limits the availability of effective antibiotics for bacterial respiratory infections. Consequently, there is an urgent demand for alternative therapeutic options. Phage therapy (PT) has re-emerged as a promising therapeutic approach and as an adjunct to antibiotic treatment. OBJECTIVE: This systematic review synthesises the application of PT for LRTIs in humans, providing

Epidemiology of notified chlamydia infections, Queensland, 2000-2019.

BACKGROUND: Chlamydia infection is a frequently reported notifiable condition in Queensland, with the highest prevalence observed among young people. Infection can occur in several sites including the anus, eye, pharynx, cervix/vagina, and urethra. Currently, historical trends in chlamydia by site of infection in Queensland are unknown. METHODS: A descriptive analysis of all chlamydia notifications in Queensland, 2000-2019, was performed. Queensland Health statewide notification data were classified as either anorectal, eye, genitourinary, upper respiratory tract, or other/unspecified. The nu

Iatrogenic botulism following botulinum toxin injection: a scoping review of clinical characteristics, risk factors, and dermal considerations.

STUDY PURPOSE: Botulinum toxin (BoNT) is commonly used for both cosmetic and medical purposes. However, improper use can lead to iatrogenic botulism. This scoping review aimed to evaluate the systemic and skin-related effects, identify risk factors, and highlight safety gaps in BoNT-related botulism. METHODS: We followed PRISMA-ScR guidelines to search for literature from 1997 to 2024 across PubMed, Scopus, EMBASE, and Google Scholar. Ten case reports (113 patient cases) met the inclusion criteria. RESULTS: Females accounted for 78.8% of cases. Systemic symptoms typically developed within fo

Epidemiology and Outcomes of Vancomycin-Resistant Enterococcus Infections in the U.S. Military Health System.

INTRODUCTION: Vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) are classified by the Centers for Diseases Control and Prevention as a serious antibiotic resistance threat. Our study aims to characterize the epidemiology, associated conditions, and outcomes of VRE infections among hospitalized patients in the U.S. military health system (MHS). MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed a retrospective cohort study of patients with VRE infection using the MHS database. Cases included all patients admitted to a military treatment facility for ≥2 days from October 2008 to September 2015 with a clinical culture gr

Neonatal Mastitis and Concurrent Serious Bacterial Infection.

OBJECTIVES: Describe the clinical presentation, prevalence, and outcomes of concurrent serious bacterial infection (SBI) among infants with mastitis. METHODS: Within the Pediatric Emergency Medicine Collaborative Research Committee, 28 sites reviewed records of infants aged ≤90 days with mastitis who were seen in the emergency department between January 1, 2008, and December 31, 2017. Demographic, clinical, laboratory, treatment, and outcome data were summarized. RESULTS: Among 657 infants (median age 21 days), 641 (98%) were well appearing, 138 (21%) had history of fever at home or in the e

National Costs Associated With Methicillin-Susceptible and Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus Hospitalizations in the United States, 2010-2014.

BACKGROUND: Infections caused by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) have been associated with worse patient outcomes and higher costs of care than methicillin-susceptible (MSSA) infections. However, since prior studies found these differences, the healthcare landscape has changed, including widespread dissemination of community-associated strains of MRSA. We sought to provide updated estimates of the excess costs of MRSA infections. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis using data from the National Inpatient Sample from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality f

The pathogenesis of leprosy in the nine-banded armadillo and the significance of IgM antibodies to PGL-1.

Twenty-seven nine-banded armadillos captured from the wild and tested free of wild M. leprae infection were distributed into four groups. They were injected at the right hind footpad with saline suspensions of M. Leprae at doses of 10(3), 10(4), 10(5) and 10(6). PGL-1 antibody levels were estimated using an ELISA test, twice during six months before the infection and every two months after the infection. One animal from each group was sacrificed at 6, 12, 18, 24, and 30-month intervals and another eight at unspecified intervals. A thorough autopsy and histopathological examination were conduct
