Exploring Psilocybin-Assisted Schema Therapy: A Conceptual Framework for Potential Therapeutic Synergies in Personality Disorders.

Personality disorders (PDs) are characterized by rigid and maladaptive patterns of self- and interpersonal functioning, leading to high clinical burden and limited treatment outcomes. Schema Therapy (ST), an integrative psychotherapy rooted in cognitive-behavioral principles, conceptualizes PDs in terms of Early Maladaptive Schemas (EMS)-pervasive cognitive-affective structures formed through unmet emotional needs-and schema modes, dynamic states organizing emotion, belief, and behavior. Evidence indicates moderate efficacy of ST, mainly for borderline personality disorder, with limited resear

Social workers' motivation to provide effective service in a challenging environment of illegal substance abuse.

BACKGROUND: The social work profession is portrayed as a stressful occupation that brings about depression and demoralisation upon social workers. It is believed that working towards changing an individual, group or community at large is difficult. AIM: To explore the gratification that social workers receive from working with youth abusing substances. SETTING: Data were collected from social workers employed by the Department of Social Development, from both the Sebokeng and Vereeniging offices, as well as the South African National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence in the Vaal Tria

Antidepressant effect of psychedelic compounds and mechanisms underlying the G protein-coupled receptors activation psychedelics: Antidepressant action and GPCR signaling.

Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) is a debilitating mental health condition that significantly impacts quality of life. Despite available pharmacological treatments, response rates remain suboptimal, with a considerable number of patients experiencing treatment-resistant depression (TRD). Indeed, classical antidepressants, primarily targeting monoaminergic systems, exhibit a therapeutic delay due to complex neuroadaptive changes. On the other hand, psychedelic compounds have recently emerged as promising, rapid-acting antidepressant agents, demonstrating efficacy particularly in TRD. This review

Which are the most heat-tolerant animals? Insights from a Mediterranean lepismatid under thermal stress in the context of climate change.

Measuring the thermal limits of insects is crucial for understanding how thermoregulatory behavior and thermal tolerance interact with the environment. A key question is the maximal temperature terrestrial animals can endure and how plastic these limits are under extreme conditions. Lepismatids are a basal group of insects with remarkable diversity in arid habitats, making them promising candidates for extreme thermoresistance, yet their thermal ecology remains largely unexplored. We present the first experimental evaluation of acclimation effects on voluntary (VTmax), critical (CTmax), and up

Reciprocal relations between parent-adolescent closeness and adolescent depressive symptoms across the pre-to-post COVID-19 pandemic.

This study examined gender-specific, process-oriented associations between parent-adolescent closeness and adolescent depressive symptoms using three-wave data from the China Family Panel Study (2018: pre-pandemic; 2020: pandemic outbreak; 2022: post-pandemic). Participants included 841 girls (Mage = 14.99 years in 2018, SD = 2.04, 87.2% Han ethnicity) and 939 boys (Mage = 14.89 years, SD = 1.99, 87.1% Han ethnicity). Bivariate latent change score models revealed that lower closeness consistently predicted subsequent greater increases in depression, regardless of the gender of parent or adoles

Individual differences in personality trait changes across the lifespan: A meta-analysis of longitudinal studies.

Recent meta-analyses and large-scale longitudinal studies have shown that the mean levels and rank orders of personality traits change throughout the lifespan. However, people differ from each other in their patterns of personality development. These individual differences in personality trait changes provide important insights into the sources and course of personality development. The present meta-analysis quantified the magnitude of individual differences in personality trait changes and their fluctuation across time lags and age by integrating findings from 229 longitudinal studies (N = 23

"But I Love the Colored": Unpacking White Emotional Defensiveness and Racial Harm in Nursing Academia.

This paper examines the discursive, emotional, and institutional dynamics embedded in the racially defensive statement, "But I love the Colored," voiced by a white nurse leader in academia. The phrase "the Colored," a US-specific designation rooted in Jim Crow-era segregation, is deliberately retained to surface how segregationist vocabulary can be effectively reactivated in contemporary academic settings. While seemingly well-intentioned, such language reveals the enduring mechanisms of whiteness in nursing academia, including benevolent racism, white emotionality, and the rhetorical deflecti

Weight loss prior to diagnosis of first-episode psychosis predicts subsequent weight gain: a retrospective cohort study of the UK Clinical Practice Research Datalink (CPRD) primary care database.

BACKGROUND: Post-psychosis weight gain is commonly rapid, yet prediagnosis weight changes are under-researched. The untreated phase of first-episode psychosis (FEP) can be characterised by behaviour which could lead to weight loss, triggering physiological adaptations which prime the body to regain weight. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to investigate the prevalence and extent of weight loss prior to diagnosis of FEP, and to investigate its impact on subsequent weight gain. METHODS: We used Clinical Practice Research Datalink primary care data, supplemented with linked hospital episode statistics, ethn

The tiger moving through the tall grass: Spontaneous perception and tracking of change-defined objects from second-order features.

The most important objects - from predators to projectiles - are often those that are moving. Accordingly, visual systems are specialized for object tracking, and many models of such processing involve continually re-identifying surface features across space and time (as you might follow a tiger by keeping track of its orange stripes). Here, in contrast, we show across four experiments - and in phenomenologically compelling demonstrations - that people also spontaneously perceive and track change-defined objects, with no enduring surface properties from moment to moment. Observers viewed regul

Cognitive trajectories in the nine months following recent-onset major depressive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Specific cognitive difficulties are common in major depressive disorder, impacting functioning and quality of life. Yet, the timing of their emergence and longitudinal course remains poorly understood. This study aimed to characterise longitudinal cognitive functioning following recent onset depression and its association with changes in depressive symptoms. METHODS: Longitudinal data from the PRONIA (Personalised Prognostic Tools for Early Psychosis Management) cohort recruited from ten European sites were used to evaluate trajectory differences between Healthy Controls (HC) and

A narrative review of clinical research on knee osteoarthritis in 2025.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Knee osteoarthritis (KOA) is the most common degenerative joint disease, causing significant social and economic burden globally. KOA management typically follows stepped-care approaches, including lifestyle changes, pharmacological treatments, and surgery. Driven by recent translational breakthroughs in KOA research, clinical management paradigms are increasingly characterized by high degrees of personalization and diagnostic precision. This review aimed to summarize key therapeutic research on KOA over the past year. METHODS: This narrative review was conducted usi

Subarctic Drosophila species cold-acclimated in laboratory maintain full capacity for oxygen consumption in their flight muscle mitochondria.

Mitochondria play a central role in energy metabolism and cellular survival, yet their seasonal adaptations in insects enduring prolonged dormancy remain poorly understood. We investigated whether winter-like lab acclimation alters mitochondrial density/abundance and respiratory capacity in the flight muscles of three Drosophila species from subarctic climatic zone and D. melanogaster. Flies were acclimated to either warm (20 °C and long day) or cold (3 °C and short day) conditions, and mitochondrial traits were assessed using microCT, microscopy, molecular proxies of mtDNA abundance, and high

The recovery of valued occupations after intimate partner violence: A scoping review analysis using the Person Environment Occupation Performance model and an occupational justice lens.

INTRODUCTION: Intimate partner violence has enduring impacts that persist well beyond the cessation of abuse. Recovery and healing, though recognised as a priority in the Australian Government's national policy, has received less research attention compared with prevention, early intervention, and response. Survivors experience interruptions to their occupations during abuse and face occupational injustice. There is limited understanding of how these occupations recover and whether occupational justice is restored during the recovery phase. METHODS: This scoping review aimed to (1) identify o

Role of Serotonin in the Neurobiology of Schizophrenia and Association With Negative Symptoms.

IMPORTANCE: The involvement of the serotonin system in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia has been proposed for over 60 years, but there has been no prior study to test if there is altered serotonin release in vivo in schizophrenia (to the authors' knowledge). OBJECTIVE: To investigate serotonin release in vivo in schizophrenia and its association with negative symptoms. It was hypothesized a priori that frontal cortex serotonin release capacity would be lower in schizophrenia compared with healthy controls and that this would be associated with more severe baseline negative symptoms. The unique contributions of adverse childhood experiences to increases in post-traumatic stress symptoms and problematic substance use after trauma exposure.

This study investigated the complex relationships between adverse childhood experiences (ACE), post-traumatic stress symptoms (PTSS), and substance use disorder (SUD) following a large-scale collective trauma in Israel. We utilized a longitudinal design with a quasi-representative sample of 1,343 Jewish Israeli adults, measuring PTSS and SUD both before (April 2022) and after (December 2023) the October 7th attack. Using regression analysis and structural equation modeling, we tested the sensitization and self-medication hypotheses, and the direct effect of ACE on SUD beyond PTSS. Results demo

Choosing and Managing Non-Abstinent Recovery: Experiences of Adults in Untreated Recovery From Alcohol Use Disorder.

INTRODUCTION: We sought to characterise non-abstinent recovery from alcohol use disorder (AUD), particularly to understand why some people choose non-abstinence instead of abstinence and to illuminate how they may continue drinking in a way consistent with recovery. METHODS: We conducted semi-structured interviews with 65 adults with resolved AUD and no history of treatment who were enrolled in a national United States study of recovery definitions and strategies. Using inductive and deductive coding, we identified and elaborated themes. RESULTS: Non-abstinent participants reported infrequen

"I too deserve good": A qualitative exploration of corrective relational experiences in psychodynamic therapy for depression.

Corrective relational experiences (CREs) occur specifically within the therapeutic relationship and are perceived by patients as distinct and meaningful. Despite their potential importance in facilitating therapeutic change, CREs received limited theoretical, clinical, and empirical attention. The present study aimed to identify different types of CREs and to examine whether they suggest distinct mechanisms of change. Posttreatment semistructured qualitative interviews with 57 patients diagnosed with major depressive disorder following short-term supportive-expressive psychodynamic psychothera

Repetitive Mild Traumatic Brain Injury Causes Neuronal Damage in the APP/PS1 Mouse Model of Alzheimer's Disease Without an Enduring Impact on Amyloid Pathology, Sleep, or Epileptiform Activity.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a known risk factor for Alzheimer's disease and related neurodegenerative diseases. Sleep disturbances and epileptiform abnormalities can appear after TBI and may contribute to the development of neuropathology. In this study, we characterized sleep, epileptiform activity, and neuropathology after repetitive mild traumatic brain injury (rmTBI) in a mouse model of Alzheimer's disease. We used the Closed Head Impact Model of Engineered Rotational Acceleration to deliver rmTBI or sham (control) treatment to 6-month-old APP/PS1 mice (N = 19). One month post-injury,

Open-label randomised controlled trial of aripiprazole/sertraline combination in comparison with quetiapine for the clinical and cost-effectiveness of treatment of bipolar depression (the ASCEnD study): study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Bipolar disorder affects around 2% of the population and is linked with reduced life expectancy and socioeconomic burden. Depressive episodes are difficult to treat and typically more prevalent, enduring and burdensome than manic episodes. The use of antidepressants alone has limited effect and is associated with significant clinical risk through polarity switch. Current National Institute for Health and Care Excellence guidelines recommend quetiapine, olanzapine (with or without fluoxetine) and lamotrigine; however, these medications have limited efficacy, tolerability and accep
