The effects of mother's physical and emotional unavailability on emotion regulation.

In summary, emotion dysregulation can develop from brief or more prolonged separations from the mother as well as from the more disturbing effects of her emotional unavailability, such as occurs when she is depressed. Harmonious interaction with the mother or the primary caregiver (attunement) of the mother's physical unavailability were seen in studies of separations from the mother due to her hospitalization or to her conference trips. These separations affected the infants' play behaviors and sleep patterns. Comparisons between hospitalizations and conference trips, however, suggested that

Social cognitive factors in brain injury-associated personality change.

Often social difficulties are the most enduring difficulties after a head injury. The social deficits most frequently reported by relatives 6-12 months post-injury include egocentric styles of social interaction characterized by family members as a change in the head-injured patient's personality style. The described characteristics of head-injured patients in terms of social perspective-taking abilities are similar to those of children reported in the cognitive developmental literature. To demonstrate the nature of the social deficits in head-injured participants, social perspective-taking pa

ERPs in schizophrenia: effects of antipsychotic medication.

Thirty unmedicated schizophrenics were compared to 29 age-matched controls on auditory and visual event-related brain potential (ERP) paradigms. Twenty-one of these patients were tested again after 1 week on placebo and after 4 weeks on antipsychotic medication. Before treatment, N1, N2, and P3 components of the auditory ERP were smaller in the schizophrenics than in the controls. Although visual N2 was smaller in schizophrenics, visual P3 was not. In spite of significant clinical improvement with antipsychotic treatment, amplitudes of auditory and visual N1, N2, and P3 were not significantly

Dissociative symptoms in media eyewitnesses of an execution.

OBJECTIVE: The first execution in California since 1976 took place recently in the San Quentin Prison gas chamber. Eighteen journalists were invited as media eyewitnesses. The authors postulated that witnessing this execution was psychologically traumatic and that dissociative and anxiety symptoms would be experienced by the journalists. METHOD: To investigate the prevalence and specific nature of these symptoms, questionnaires were sent to all the journalists about a month after the execution. The questionnaire contained 17 items assessing dissociative symptoms from the authors' questionnair

Long-term mental sequelae of political imprisonment in East Germany.

This paper presents an assessment of the long-term mental sequelae of prolonged stress due to political persecution and imprisonment in the German Democratic Republic. Fifty-five former political prisoners with enduring psychiatric disorders were examined retrospectively in an exploratory study. The patients' experiences before, during, and after imprisonment were investigated using a semistructured interview. Psychopathological symptoms were assessed on clinical and self-rating scales; diagnostic classification was conducted according to DSM-III-R. The patients had experienced serious trauma,

Personality disorders in anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa.

Two self-report questionnaires (MCMI and BSI) designed to measure personality disorder (PD) according to DSM-III (R) criteria were administered to patients with a diagnosis of anorexia nervosa (AN) (n = 19), bulimia nervosa (BN) (n = 16), or both diagnoses (AN + BN) (n = 9), both before and after treatment for the eating disorder. The main finding was that self-reported Personality Disorder (PD) diagnoses are not stable enduring characteristics among this group of eating disorder patients. A high rate of PD diagnoses occurred in all patient groups at admission (93%) and at discharge (79%). Bot

Gamma distribution model describes maturational curves for delta wave amplitude, cortical metabolic rate and synaptic density.

We analyzed the available ontogenetic data (birth to 30 years of age) for: amplitude of delta EEG (DA) waves during sleep; cortical metabolic rate (CMR) measured with positron emission tomography; and synaptic density (SD) in frontal cortex. Each is at the adult level at birth, increases to about twice this level by 3 years of age, and then gradually falls back to the adult level over the next two decades. Statistical analyses revealed that individual gamma distribution models fit each data set as well as did the best ad hoc polynomial. A test of whether a single gamma distribution model could

The Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory (MCMI) as a treatment outcome measure for psychiatric inpatients.

The Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory (MCMI) is a 175-item inventory designed to assess both clinical symptomatology and underlying, more enduring personality traits and syndromes. The purpose of this study was to determine whether the MCMI personality scales evidenced greater stability over time than did the MCMI symptom scales. The MCMI was administered to 151 consecutively admitted inpatients at an acute care, private psychiatric hospital. Patients were administered the MCMI shortly after admission and shortly before discharge. Results indicated that the personality scales evidenced grea

The fantasy residue: an antitherapeutic force on the psychiatric inpatient service.

This paper will attempt a model of organizational behavior to the study of the origin, perpetuation, and rectification of certain antitherapeutic forces (Sacks and Carpenter 1974) on inpatient services, which I shall call the ward's "fantasy residue." The fantasy residue consists of the enduring antitherapeutic patterns of dealing with patients that have become normative for a given ward and evolve from irrational staff responses to a variety of stresses in the absence of appropriate corrective administrative actions. Because they originate in irrational responses to complicated situations of

Neuropsychological deficit in polydrug users. A preliminary report of the findings of the collaborative neuropsychological study of polydrug users.

The Collaborative Neuropsychological Study of Polydrug Users performed extensive neuropsychological assessments on 15 polydrug users 3 weeks after their enrollment in each of eight polydrug demonstration programs. Fifty-six (37%) of these subjects exhibited neuropsychological deficit. This deficit was partially related to increasing age, poor education and premorbid medical risk factors. The deficit was also associated with extensive and intensive use of two classes of drugs: sedatives (sleeping pills and minor tranquilizers) and opiates (heroin and other narcotic drugs). Seventeen (26%) of a
