Impact of Asynchronous Training on Student's Confidence and Attitudes Regarding Patients With Opioid Use Disorders.

BACKGROUND: The American opioid use disorder (OUD) and overdose epidemic require physicians and advanced care providers to be prepared to care for patients with this life-threatening condition. Learning to identify, engage, and treat patients with OUD with medications is an essential skill for providers, as is developing requisite confidence and therapeutic attitudes regarding the care of patients with OUD (CP-OUD). To address the need for improved OUD treatment education, our team built and implemented a 12-module asynchronous course entitled, "Care of Patients with Opioid Use Disorder", in 3

Sodium Oxybate as a Potential New Treatment for Catatonia in Patients With Depression, Bipolar Disorder, or a Psychotic Disorder: Protocol for a Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Catatonia is a severe psychomotor syndrome predominantly associated with depressive, bipolar, and psychotic disorders. Untreated catatonia has a 10% mortality rate and may lead to complications such as renal failure, rhabdomyolysis, pneumonia, embolism, and contractures. High doses of the benzodiazepine lorazepam, a gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA)-A receptor modulator, are the primary pharmacological treatment, enhancing GABA's inhibitory effect, potentially reducing symptoms of catatonia. However, lorazepam is ineffective in about 25% of cases, leaving electroconvulsive therapy (EC

Cognitive rehabilitation after out-of-hospital cardiac arrest: combining metacognitive strategy and direct training to improve daily cognitive functioning.

OBJECTIVE: Approximately half of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) survivors have enduring cognitive impairment. This study investigated the effectiveness of a combined cognitive rehabilitation approach, combining metacognitive strategy training with direct computerized-training, to improve cognitive functioning in daily life after OHCA. METHOD: A single-case experimental design with a non-concurrent multiple baseline was used including five participants. The intervention (6-10 weeks) entailed therapist-guided metacognitive and direct training, with a randomized starting date.  Participan

Changes in emergency department visits by nursing home residents before, during and after the COVID-19 pandemic: Retrospective study.

The COVID-19 pandemic significantly impacted emergency department (ED) visits by nursing home (NH) residents, leading to notable shifts in visit rates, characteristics, and outcomes over time. This retrospective study analyzed all-cause ED visits among NH residents aged over 65 at a large Italian hospital from 2019 to 2022. Non-COVID-19 visits declined sharply by 63.8% in 2020 and continued to remain below pre-pandemic levels in the following years. Compared to 2019, the risk of respiratory disease-related visits decreased significantly in 2021 and 2022. Conversely, the risk of mental health-r

Contributing to 'a sense of purpose' - Evaluating consumer recovery progress after attending a therapeutic-recreation intervention programme: A quantitative analysis.

INTRODUCTION: The recommended objective for mental health plans and policies is the adoption of recovery approaches to mental healthcare. Mental health recovery is no longer defined by symptom resolution but as a journey towards a meaningful life from the consumer's own perspective. Recovery approaches focus on consumers' strengths, feelings of well-being and the achievement of personal goals. Designing recovery-oriented interventions is crucial for supporting people in their personal recovery journey. AIM: This study sought to evaluate how attending a recovery-oriented intervention impacts t

Improved implicit self-esteem is associated with extended antidepressant effects following a novel synergistic intervention.

INTRODUCTION: In a previously published randomized controlled trial, automated self-association training (ASAT), a novel digital intervention, was found to extend the rapid antidepressant effect of a single infusion of ketamine for at least 30 days. In this secondary analysis, we aimed to understand the potential role of implicit self-esteem in the combined antidepressant effect of ketamine and ASAT training, by investigating the novel synergistic treatment's effects on implicit self-associations and their relation to symptom improvement. METHODS: A total of 154 adults (ages 18-60) with treat

EEG signatures of cognitive decline after mild SARS-CoV-2 infection: an age-dependent study.

BACKGROUND: Current research on the neurological impact of SARS-CoV-2 primarily focuses on the elderly or severely ill individuals. This study aims to explore the diverse neurological consequences of SARS-CoV-2 infection, with a particular focus on mildly affected children and adolescents. METHODS: A cohort study was conducted to collect pre- and post-infection resting-state electroencephalogram (EEG) data from 185 participants and 181 structured questionnaires of long-term symptoms across four distinct age groups. The goal was to comprehensively evaluate the impact of SARS-CoV-2 infection on

The effect of cancer and cancer treatment on attention control: evidence from anti-saccade performance.

PURPOSE: Cancer and cancer treatment have been associated with cognitive changes in survivorship, with forgetfulness and distractibility reported years post-treatment. Deficits in attention control may explain these difficulties. We assessed breast cancer survivors using a primary measure of attention control, the saccade/antisaccade task, to assess the effects of diagnosis and treatment. METHODS: Saccade performance was studied in a cohort of breast cancer patients at two time points, (1) after surgery before adjuvant treatment and (2) approximately 2 years after enrollment, and compared to

Cognitive impact and brain structural changes in long COVID patients: a cross-sectional MRI study two years post infection in a cohort from Argentina.

OBJECTIVE: Long COVID is a condition characterised by persistent symptoms after a SARS-CoV-2 infection, with neurological manifestations being particularly frequent. Existing research suggests that long COVID patients not only report cognitive symptoms but also exhibit measurable cognitive impairment. Neuroimaging studies have identified structural alterations in brain regions linked to cognitive functions. However, most of these studies have focused on patients within months of their initial infection. This study aims to explore the longer-term cognitive effects and brain structural changes i

Prevalence of neurocognitive deficits in patients with first-episode schizophrenia in an African sample and its relationship with dimensions of psychopathology and psychosocial outcome.

BACKGROUND: Current evidence supports the idea that neurocognitive deficits (NCD) constitute a core dimension of schizophrenia. Studies on longitudinal changes in neurocognition among neuroleptic-naive first-episode schizophrenia (FES) from Africa are uncommon. We aimed to highlight the prevalence of, and changes in NCD among FES on naturalistic treatment follow-up for 8 weeks, and the relationship with psychopathological and psychosocial outcomes. METHODS: Consecutive FES and Healthy Control (HC) were recruited. Diagnosis of schizophrenia was based on ICD-10 criteria. The HC (n = 86) consist

Cognitive impairments after maximal repeated breath-holding in elite breath-hold divers.

BACKGROUND: Breath-hold (BH) training over several years may result in mild but persistent neurocognitive impairment. Paradoxically, the acute effects of repeated BH generating intermittent hypoxia on neurocognitive functions are still poorly understood. Therefore, we decided to examine the impact of five-repeated maximal BH on attention, processing speed, and reasoning abilities. METHODS: Thirty six men separated in 3 groups (12 elite BH divers: E<inf>BHD</inf>; 12 novice BH divers: N<inf>BHD</inf>; and 12 non BH divers: CTL) performed before and after 5 maximal BHs, neuropsychological compu

Psilocybin increases emotional empathy in patients with major depression.

Empathy plays a crucial role in interpersonal relationships and mental health. It is decreased in a variety of psychiatric disorders including major depression. Psilocybin, a promising candidate for treating depression, has been shown to acutely increase emotional empathy in healthy volunteers. However, no study has investigated this effect and its relevance for symptom improvement in a clinical population. This study examines the enduring effects of psilocybin-assisted therapy on empathy in depressed patients using a randomized, placebo-controlled design. Fifty-one depressed patients were ran

Evaluating the 3-month post-intervention impact of a supportive text message program on mental health outcomes during the 2023 wildfires in Alberta and Nova Scotia, Canada.

BACKGROUND: Individuals exposed to wildfires are at risk of developing adverse mental health conditions in the months following the event. Receiving supportive text interventions during and after a wildfire event can have a significant impact on reducing mental health conditions over time. OBJECTIVES: The study aimed to assess the effectiveness of a supportive text message intervention service in reducing the severity and prevalence of psychological conditions 3 months following the 2023 wildfires in Alberta and Nova Scotia, two regions heavily affected by these natural disasters. METHODS: I

Seizure duration predicts postictal electroencephalographic recovery after electroconvulsive therapy-induced seizures.

OBJECTIVE: We aim to provide a quantitative description of the relation between seizure duration and the postictal state using features extracted from the postictal electroencephalogram (EEG). METHODS: Thirty patients with major depressive disorder treated with electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) were studied with continuous EEG before, during, and after ECT-induced seizures. EEG recovery was quantified as the spectral difference between postictal and baseline EEG using the temporal brain symmetry index (BSI). The postictal temporal EEG evolution was modeled with a single exponential. The paramet

A longitudinal study of Oklahoma City bombing rescue and recovery responders providing qualitative introspections of their experience nearly a quarter century later.

BACKGROUND: The 1995 terrorist bombing in Oklahoma City provided a particularly useful research opportunity. It was the most severe incident of terrorism on American soil at the time. Prior research on rescue and recovery workers responding to such events has been largely limited to early post-disaster periods, most focusing on psychopathology such as post-traumatic stress disorder. This incident provided a unique unrealized opportunity to examine long-term psychosocial effects on first responders studied longitudinally over decades after the event, using qualitative methods to yield rich, in-

Are migrants diagnosed with a trauma-related disorder at risk of premature mortality? A register-based cohort study in Denmark.

BACKGROUND: Mental illness is common among refugees displaced by conflict and war. While evidence points to the relatively good health in terms of longevity of migrants resettled in the destination country, less is known about the mortality of the most vulnerable migrants with a trauma-related diagnosis alone and those with an additional comorbid psychotic disorder. This study aimed to provide an overview of the number and mortality of foreign-born individuals diagnosed with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder or Enduring Personality Change after a Catastrophic Event (PTSD/EPCACE), a psychotic diso

Impact of a brief distress intolerance intervention on acute stress modulation of response inhibition neurophysiology in cannabis use disorder.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of cannabis use in the US has increased within the past two decades. Moreover, cannabis use disorder (CUD) is associated with significant disability, but the underlying neural mechanisms of CUD are unclear. Distress intolerance (DI), a psychological risk factor for CUD, may confer risk in part via impaired inhibitory control (IC) capacity during acute stress. DI and cannabis use problems have been associated with altered N2 amplitude, an IC-related event-related potential, in prior cross-sectional studies, but whether altered N2 is a state marker of CUD severity, a p

Symptom flares after COVID-19 infection versus vaccination among youth with PANS/PANDAS.

Background: Flares of autoimmune conditions can happen after coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection and after COVID-19 vaccines. Patients and clinicians confront difficult decisions about vaccine safety when considering efforts to balance the risks of disease exacerbation after vaccines versus the protection that vaccines offer to potential serious life-threatening complications of COVID-19 infection. Objective: To examine symptom flares after COVID-19 infection and vaccines in the case of a form of autoimmune encephalitis that primarily affects children and young adults (pediatric acut

Alternative beliefs in psychedelic drug users.

Previous research has suggested that classical psychedelics can foster significant and enduring changes in personality traits and subjective wellbeing. Despite the lack of evidence for adverse effects on mental health stemming from psychedelic use, concerns persist regarding the capacity of these substances to modulate information processing and attitudes towards factual data. The aim of the present study was to investigate the propensity for accepting alternative facts and the general treatment of knowledge within a sample of 392 participants, 233 of whom reported at least a single incidence
