Common and unique menopause experiences among autistic and non-autistic people: A qualitative study.

Autistic people face both similar challenges to non-autistic people as they navigate menopause and additional unique challenges. Semi-structured interviews with 15 autistic and 14 non-autistic adults (assigned female at birth), explored experiences of menopause. Thematic analysis was carried out for the autistic and non-autistic groups separately. Analysis yielded four overarching themes: information about menopause, experiences of menopause, medical support for menopause and backdrop to the menopause. Each of these contained subthemes which indicated both shared and unique experiences between

An analysis of bus drivers' interactions with motorists.

Driving a bus in the city is a task that demands attention to changing road conditions while dealing with passengers' needs. Bus drivers often experience aggression from passengers and other road users, which sometimes escalate, eventually leading to violence. However, many road conflicts are rarely reported and, hence, difficult to study. This article analyses bus drivers' reactions to conflicts with other motorists in Santiago (Chile), where public transport accounts for 35% of the total trips. Four percent of the population of bus drivers (639) responded to a survey with questions about job

Outcome of total knee arthroplasty in patients with Blount disease or Blount-like deformity: a systematic review.

Blount disease is a genetic disorder affecting the proximal tibial bone, resulting in a complex deformity of the knee. In the absence of timely treatment, the likelihood of developing degenerative arthritis increases. A total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is the conventional treatment for adult patients with Blount disease or Blount-like deformity with advanced degenerative changes. The aim of this systematic review is to evaluate the results of TKA in this particular cohort of patients. The present systematic review comprised a total of 5 articles. The 5 evaluated studies included data from 9 patie

Sugar sensors in plants: Orchestrators of growth, stress tolerance, and hormonal crosstalk.

Sugars, vital metabolites for cellular health, play a central role in regulating diverse intracellular pathways that control plant growth and development. They also enhance stress responses, enabling plants to endure adverse conditions. A few intracellular molecules involved in sensing the intracellular sugar content and concomitantly facilitating appropriate response (growth or survivability) are known as sugar sensors. Among the numerous sugar sensors identified in plants, this review focuses on four extensively studied sugar sensors, namely hexokinase (HXK), Sucrose non-fermenting 1-related

Structural Cerebellar and Lateral Frontoparietal Networks are altered in CUD: An SBM Analysis.

Repetitive drug use results in enduring structural and functional changes in the brain. Addiction research has consistently revealed significant modifications in key brain networks related to reward, habit, salience, executive function, memory and self-regulation. Techniques like Voxel-based Morphometry have highlighted large-scale structural differences in grey matter across distinct groups. Source-based Morphometry (SBM) takes this a step further by incorporating the Independent Component Analysis to detect shared patterns of grey matter variation, all without requiring prior selection of re

Tailored Adherence Incentives for Childhood Asthma Medications: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

IMPORTANCE: Differential adherence to efficacious preventive medications is one potentially modifiable driver of racial disparities in childhood asthma outcomes. OBJECTIVE: To determine the effect of a financial incentive-enhanced intervention on adherence to inhaled asthma preventive medication in a high-risk, predominantly racially minoritized cohort of children with asthma. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This was a randomized clinical trial conducted from September 2019 through June 2022 at a large mid-Atlantic pediatric health system in the US. Children were eligible if they were bet

How Young Widows and Widowers Experience Grief More Than Two Years Following the Death of Their Spouse: An Integrative Review.

BACKGROUND: Grieving the loss of a spouse as a young adult is unthinkable to many, yet a reality for some. Little is known about the grief of young widow(er)s, age 45 and under, and how it is experienced when moving forward in their forever changed lives, several years following the death of a spouse. PURPOSE: An integrative review was conducted to develop an understanding of what is currently known about the long-term experiences of grief in the young widowed population. RESULTS: Four themes emerged: (1) Losing More Than a Spouse; (2) Embracing Personal Change and Growth; (3) Maintaining a

Acute subjective effects of psychedelics in naturalistic group settings prospectively predict longitudinal improvements in trauma symptoms, trait shame, and connectedness among adults with childhood maltreatment histories.

Studies of psychedelic use in naturalistic and clinical settings have suggested safety and mental health benefits for adults with histories of childhood maltreatment. Acute psychological mechanisms that predict therapeutic benefits in this population, however, have yet to be determined. Two common group settings of naturalistic psychedelic use - organized ceremonies and raves or other electronic dance music events - might facilitate therapeutic psychedelic effects because of the unique psychosocial environments they comprise. This prospective, longitudinal study sought to investigate 2 primary

Maternal oxytocin administration mitigates nociceptive, social, and epigenetic impairments in adolescent offspring exposed to perinatal trauma.

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) alter brain development, leading to vulnerability for chronic pain, mental health disorders, and suicidality. These effects often emerge during adolescence. Importantly, ACEs can occur prenatally, including when exposed to in utero intimate partner violence (IPV) or postnatally as maternal neglect. Maternal social support has demonstrated promise in the mitigation of ACE-related deficits. Oxytocin, which has a role in social-bonding and stress regulation, serves as a suitable surrogate for social support in preclinical studies. Therefore, we aimed to explor

The phenomenology of psilocybin: transformative insights for research and clinical practice.

INTRODUCTION: Considering the increasing evidence supporting psilocybin's efficacy in therapeutic settings, it is essential to deepen our understanding of its subjective meanings and effects to enhance its integration into psychotherapy. Current knowledge is primarily based on psychometric assessments or unstructured personal reports, leaving a gap in the qualitative analysis of subjective psychedelic experiences and the resulting changes. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to describe the subjective psychedelic experience with psilocybin in a structured, objective, and non-judgmental way (Epoche),

Is early life programming a promising strategy for methane mitigation and sustainable intensification in ruminants?

Sustainable animal production requires lowering emissions and adapting to climate change. Numerous nutritional and management interventions that enhance adult ruminants' efficiency and resilience produce only temporary results, reducing the sustainability of the programs. This is because only short-lived changes in the host and rumen microbiome occur, which revert to the original levels when the intervention ceases. Early life programming (ELP) is a promising approach to increase sustainable livestock production, enhance efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Early influences using EL

Twenty-five years without progress: The enduring challenge of soft tissue sarcomas.

Over the past decade, remarkable improvements have been seen in oncology. The survival rate for breast cancer has more than doubled since 1975. Even diseases previously known for having poor prognoses, such as lung cancer, saw an improvement in survival over this period. To that end, the aim of this commentary is to evaluate how patients with soft tissue sarcoma (STS) fared during this period. By analyzing data from 21,948 patients with STS (excluding gastrointestinal stromal tumor [GIST]) from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results 9 registries, this study determined that the median

Carbon dynamics in the intertidal rockpools along the central west coast of India.

Shallow inter-tidal ecosystems such as rockpools provide important insights into the ongoing climatic changes and their consequences. We studied the diurnal and seasonal variations in carbon chemistry and associated physicochemical parameters of intertidal rockpools along the central west coast of India for four years. The temperature (26 °C-39 °C), salinity (3-55), pHT (7.79-9.27) and other carbon parameters exhibited a huge variation in the studied rockpools. These significant variabilities were observed in the parameters among seasons and low to high intertidal transition (tidal zone). Ecos

Categorization of drivers of change for emerging food safety risks.

The emergence of food safety risks can be influenced by various causes, also known as drivers of change. Understanding the characteristics related to the manageability of these drivers and the health impact of their associated hazards is critical for effective food safety management and resource allocation. This study aims to categorize drivers of change for known food safety hazards based on their impact on human health and their manageability. Identified drivers were categorized and ranked through an expert survey and a PROMETHEE multi-criteria analysis. The weighted performance criteria are

The Impact of Cognitive Impairment on Cardiovascular Disease.

The older adult population is the fastest-growing segment of the U.S. population. Cardiovascular disease is common among older patients, which leads to excess morbidity, mortality, and health care utilization. Cognitive impairment is also common in older adults with cardiovascular disease and is expected to increase in parallel with cardiovascular disease because both conditions share the same underlying risk factors. Cardiovascular disease also exacerbates cognitive impairment through hypertension, cerebral hypoperfusion, inflammation, arrhythmia, emboli, and medication adverse events. Moreov

Background: Surviving acute respiratory failure (ARF) in the ICU is often a life-changing event. Most survivors face endure impairments across several domains, termed as post-intensive care syndrome (PICS). There is limited investigation on how survivors and their caregivers perceive recovery from their own lived experiences. The objective of this study was to characterize which domains of recovery matter most to ARF survivors and their caregivers. Methods: A single-center, prospective observational study nested within 2 contiguous cohort studies: Addressing Post-Intensive Care Syndrome (APICS

Phylogenetic Determinants Behind the Ecological Traits of Relic Tree Family Juglandaceae, Their Root-Associated Symbionts, and Response to Climate Change.

Dual mycorrhizal symbiosis, i.e., the association with both arbuscular and ectomycorrhizal fungal symbionts, is an ambiguous phenomenon concurrently considered as common among various genetic lineages of trees and a result of bias in data analyses. Recent studies have shown that the ability to form dual mycorrhizal associations is a distinguishing factor for the continental-scale invasion of alien tree species. However, the phylogenetic mechanisms that drive it remain unclear. In this study, all the evidence on root-associated symbionts of Juglandaceae from South and North America, Asia, and E

Decolonizing the exploration of perinatal mental health screening with Indigenous Australian parents in primary care.

BACKGROUND: Effective mental health primary prevention and early detection strategies targeting perinatal mental healthcare settings are vital. Poor maternal mental health places the developing foetus at risk of lasting cognitive, developmental, behavioural, physical, and mental health problems. Indigenous women endure unacceptably poor mental health compared to all other Australians and disproportionately poorer maternal and infant health outcomes. Mounting evidence demonstrates that screening practices with Indigenous women are neither effective nor acceptable. Improved understanding of thei
