New horizons in improving research capacity in English care homes for older adults.

As the care home sector expands over time, the health and social care needs of both residents and staff intensify and diversify. These sector-wide changes call for significant growth in research capacity to deliver useful, pertinent and timely evidence. In this paper we highlight growing pressures in the care home sector, and the major and enduring barriers to conducting research across that sector, within homes and amongst staff, drawing primarily on our experiences conducting public health research in England. These obstacles include a lack of national infrastructure, tradition and culture,

Marine heatwaves and eutrophication jeopardize the seagrass Halodule wrightii and associated infauna.

Coastal ecosystems such as seagrass meadows endure challenges imposed by marine heatwaves (MHWs) and eutrophication. Although the isolated impacts of these stressors are well documented, their combined effects are yet to be better understood. To fill this knowledge gap, we conducted a mesocosm experiment evaluating the combined effects of stress caused by a MHW and exposure to effluent from a ruptured sewage pond -used as a proxy for eutrophication- on the seagrass Halodule wrightii and its associated infauna. Our results showed that H. wrightii and its infauna tolerated the conditions of the

Biocultural memory of reciprocity: the Mapuche trafkintu as social-ecological relationships of care and vindication.

Reconsidering the relationship between humans and more-than-human beings amid global crises has brought reciprocity practices between people and biodiversity to the forefront. We examine social-ecological reciprocity practices within Indigenous territories and their direct connection to biocultural memory. Specifically, we explore the Mapuche practice of trafkintu in the Andean zone of Wallmapu, La Araucanía region of southern Chile. Using a mixed-methods framework, from a relational perspective, we integrate spatial analysis of a seed exchange network involving 80 local farmers, with an ethno

Tracking changes in anxiety, depression, and stress among Ukrainian university students: a three-wave study from the COVID-19 pandemic to two years of ongoing full-scale war.

Background: Since 2020, modern youth in Ukraine have faced an exceptionally challenging period, first enduring the burdens of the COVID-19 pandemic and then being thrust into the full-scale war, characterized by persistent traumatic exposure. Given the profound and lasting psychological consequences of such crises, it is essential to monitor the long-term impact of war on youth mental health. However, despite the urgency of this issue, longitudinal studies with large, diverse samples remain scarce. Objective: This study aims to track changes in anxiety, depression, and stress and explore their

Multi-scale design of the structure and mechanical performance of the deep-sea hydrothermal mussel (Bathymodiolus aduloides) shell.

Deep-sea hydrothermal vents are renowned for being among the most extreme environments on Earth. However, the mussel shells found in these vent sites demonstrate remarkable productivity, despite being subjected to high pressure as well as unusual levels of heavy metals, pH, temperature, CO2, and sulphides. To comprehend how these mussels endure such extreme conditions, a systematic comparative study was conducted, focusing on the unique chemical composition, structural designs, and mechanical properties of hydrothermal vent mussels (Bathymodiolus aduloides) in comparison to shallow-water musse

Falling asleep follows a predictable bifurcation dynamic.

Sleep is a fundamental part of our lives; yet, how our brain falls asleep remains one of the most enduring mysteries of neuroscience. Here we report a new conceptual framework to analyze and model this phenomenon. The framework represents the changes in brain electroencephalogram activity during the transition into sleep as a trajectory in a normalized feature space. We use the framework to show that the brain's wake-to-sleep transition follows bifurcation dynamics with a distinct tipping point preceded by a critical slowing down. We validate the bifurcation dynamics in two independent dataset

The persistence of changes in insulin sensitivity and metabolic gene expression after acute exercise in male and female mice.

BACKGROUND: Acute exercise has been suggested to increase insulin sensitivity, although the duration of the improvement may last anywhere from 4 to 72 h. In addition, changes in gene expression in response to exercise is suggested to last at least 24 h. Despite this, exercise training studies assess metabolism anywhere from immediately after to 72 h after the last exercise session, which could confuse the acute versus chronic exercise effects. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to assess the duration of changes in insulin sensitivity after acute exercise and the impact of acute exercise

Nonrandom Missingness in Child Race and Ethnicity Records and the US Federal Data Standards: Pooled Analysis of Community-Based Child Health Studies.

BACKGROUND: Racism perpetuates the unequal distribution of power, resources, and privilege within and between societies to the detriment of marginalized groups. Racialization involves categorizing people based on traits to which socially constructed meaning and value have been ascribed. In public health, this process can manifest when tracking racial health disparities in children, which requires aggregating parent-reported race and ethnicity data into federally recognized categories. The demographic surveys used to characterize children's identity in the United States mirror those administere

Protein Intrinsic Disorder and Adaptation to Extreme Environments: Resilience of Chaos.

Extremophiles are organisms adapted not only to survive in harsh conditions but thrive in environments considered extreme or uninhabitable by most life forms. They serve as a living reflection of a popular motto "What doesn't kill you makes you stronger" and show that life on Earth is spread well outside the human-centric comfort zone. In fact, extremophiles, being found in deep crustal and oceanic depths, outer space, highly acidic and basic conditions, extreme temperatures (+122 °C to -20 °C), and in the presence of toxins and high radiation, demonstrate life's remarkable adaptability. An early career psychiatrist perspective on the future of psychiatry: retaining our roots in times of growth.

Psychiatry is a discipline emergent from parts of other disciplines. This places it in a precarious position in society. Its practitioners must work with great uncertainty, formulate complex problems and respond to issues that fall outside the scope of other disciplines. Knowledge is always being added across psychiatry's biopsychosocial domains, and its purpose is constantly evolving in response to shifting societal perspectives on its role. Change in the coming decades will span data and knowledge, contexts of care, roles and relationships, as well as treatment advances. These changes will n

Lead exposure during development alters synaptic organization and protein expression in rat hippocampus.

Lead (Pb) is a well-established environmental neurotoxicant known to impair cognitive, sensory, and behavioral functions. Developmental exposure to Pb induces irreversible morphological and functional alterations in the central nervous system. In this study, we investigated the impact of early-life Pb exposure on anxiety-like behaviour, hippocampal structure and protein expression in rats. Neonatal rats were exposed to 100 ppm Lead acetate via maternal lactation from postnatal day (PND) 1-21. Behavioral assessment using the light-dark box test revealed a significant reduction in latency to ent

Weathering induced surface transformation and trace metal affinities of plastic nurdles discharged from the X-Press Pearl ship accident (2021-2024).

This study evaluated the pollution level at Sarakkuwa Beach and examined weathering-induced volume loss and surface chemical changes in nurdles compared to pristine nurdles. Sand samples were collected at four time points (16, 24, 28, and 40 months), following initial nurdle spillage. Chemical composition of nurdles were analyzed using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), while digital microscopic imaging was used to reveal surface morphology. Volume reduction of randomly selected nurdles was quantified using densitometric titration. Conduc

Divergent psychological stress response patterns to the COVID-19 pandemic in psychiatric patients with vs. without PTSD: A real-world exploratory study.

The COVID-19 pandemic has been shown to increase psychological burden and requires efficient coping strategies to maintain mental health. In particular, it remains unclear which pandemic-related stress response pattern occurs in pre-existing posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) during the pandemic - at the same time these patients potentially exhibit dysfunctional coping of artificially generated psychosocial stressors. To analyze this so far widely unconsidered pandemic-related stress response in PTSD, this study longitudinally measured psychosocial burden and adjustment disorder (AD) symptom

Persistent differences in autistic symptom severity after one year in individuals at clinical high risk of psychosis and with first-episode psychosis.

BACKGROUND: Autistic symptoms have been shown to influence functional outcomes and prognosis not only in schizophrenia but also in individuals at clinical high-risk of psychosis (CHR-P) and those experiencing their first-episode psychosis (FEP). However, it remains unclear whether these symptoms reflect enduring traits that persist over time or whether they are states that can improve with treatment in CHR-P and FEP. This study aimed to investigate the one-year trajectory of autistic symptoms in individuals at CHR-P and with FEP. METHODS: A total of 59 participants who completed a one-year fo

Changes in emergency department visits by nursing home residents before, during and after the COVID-19 pandemic: Retrospective study.

The COVID-19 pandemic significantly impacted emergency department (ED) visits by nursing home (NH) residents, leading to notable shifts in visit rates, characteristics, and outcomes over time. This retrospective study analyzed all-cause ED visits among NH residents aged over 65 at a large Italian hospital from 2019 to 2022. Non-COVID-19 visits declined sharply by 63.8% in 2020 and continued to remain below pre-pandemic levels in the following years. Compared to 2019, the risk of respiratory disease-related visits decreased significantly in 2021 and 2022. Conversely, the risk of mental health-r

A DESCRIPTION OF ADDISON'S DISEASE, AND ITS NEUROPSYCHIATRIC MANIFESTATIONS COMPARING THE DISEASE AS IT IS NOW TO THE DISEASE AS EXPERIENCED BY SAINT ELIZABETH OF THE TRINITY IN 1906.

We describe Addison's disease, which is the disease caused by Adrenal Gland Insufficiency. Addison's disease is an uncommon endocrine disorder characterised by inadequate production of hormones, predominantly aldosterone and cortisol, by the adrenal glands. This condition occurs due to damage to the adrenal cortex, the region responsible for hormone synthesis. Clinical manifestations of Addison's disease are often insidious and nonspecific, including symptoms such as myasthenia, persistent fatigue, unintentional weight loss, hypotension, and hyperpigmentation of the skin, especially in areas s
