Expression of a recombinant protein by an acetic acid bacterial host.

We evaluated the suitability of Komagataeibacter europaeus, a vinegar production organism adept at synthetic media growth, as a host for heterologous gene expression. Cryptic plasmids (pGE1 and pGE2 derivatives) from K. europaeus strain KGMA0119 were employed as vectors for heterologous gene expression. The focus was placed on the groES promoter as a potential inducible switch. The groES promoter was fused with the EGFP gene and introduced into a pGE1 derivative to assess its suitability. Ethanol, acetic acid, and heat stresses were examined under various conditions for induction. EGFP transcr

Alternative beliefs in psychedelic drug users.

Previous research has suggested that classical psychedelics can foster significant and enduring changes in personality traits and subjective wellbeing. Despite the lack of evidence for adverse effects on mental health stemming from psychedelic use, concerns persist regarding the capacity of these substances to modulate information processing and attitudes towards factual data. The aim of the present study was to investigate the propensity for accepting alternative facts and the general treatment of knowledge within a sample of 392 participants, 233 of whom reported at least a single incidence

Etiology, Presentation, and Risk Factors for Diarrheal Syndromes in 3 Sub-Saharan African Countries After the Introduction of Rotavirus Vaccines From the Vaccine Impact on Diarrhea in Africa (VIDA) Study.

BACKGROUND: Diarrheal disease is heterogeneous, including watery diarrhea (WD) and dysentery, some cases of which become persistent diarrhea (PD). Changes in risk over time necessitate updated knowledge of these syndromes in sub-Saharan Africa. METHODS: The Vaccine Impact on Diarrhea in Africa (VIDA) study was an age-stratified, case-control study of moderate-to-severe diarrhea among children <5 years old in The Gambia, Mali, and Kenya (2015-2018). We analyzed cases with follow-up of about 60 days after enrollment to detect PD (lasting ≥14 days), examined the features of WD and dysentery, and

Unmet Prenatal Expectations During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

PURPOSE: To explore the experiences of pregnant women who were living in the United States during the COVID-19 pandemic. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Using a qualitative design, we used data obtained from women in their second or third trimester of pregnancy who participated in the Perinatal Experiences and COVID-19 Effects (PEACE) Study from May 21 to December 22, 2020. RESULTS: 361 of 408 pregnant women (88%) who participated in the PEACE study during that timeframe provided narrative comments. Participants had a mean age of 33.2 years (SD = 3.7) with a high percentage of White women (91.4%).

Evenings with Molly: Adult Couples' Use of MDMA for Relationship Enhancement.

Within the modern resurgence of psychedelics as medicinal agents for a range of conditions, the story of MDMA (Ecstasy, Molly) has been re-narrated from a dangerous street drug to a breakthrough mental health therapy. Even still, the story of MDMA remains incomplete within a binary discourse of deviant recreational use versus psychotherapeutic-medical use. The present research aimed to uncover an emerging model of MDMA use grounded in the experiences of adult couples using MDMA privately and in the context of their committed relationships. Eight adult couples who self-reported active MDMA use

Experiences of Black and Latinx health care workers in support roles during the COVID-19 pandemic: A qualitative study.

Black and Latinx individuals, and in particular women, comprise an essential health care workforce often serving in support roles such as nursing assistants and dietary service staff. Compared to physicians and nurses, they are underpaid and potentially undervalued, yet play a critical role in health systems. This study examined the impact of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic from the perspective of Black and Latinx health care workers in support roles (referred to here as HCWs). From December 2020 to February 2021, we conducted 2 group interviews (n = 9, 1 group in English and

"We've Already Endured the Trauma, Who is Going to Either End that Cycle or Continue to Feed It?": The Influence of Family and Legal Systems on Native American Women's Intimate Partner Violence Experiences.

Native American (NA) women experience higher rates of intimate partner violence (IPV) compared to other U.S. racial/ethnic groups, yet previous research has not sufficiently examined the complex determinants shaping their IPV experiences. This research explores the interplay of family networks and legal systems influencing NA women's IPV experiences. Data were collected through in-depth individual and group interviews with 42 NA survivors and 41 health/social service providers from July 2016 to June 2017 in NA communities from three different U.S. regions. We used Grounded Theory to develop em

Barriers to recruitment into emergency department-initiated palliative care: a sub-study of a multi-site, randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Emergency department (ED) visits among older adults are common near the end of life. Palliative care has been shown to reduce ED visits and to increase quality of life among patients, but recruitment into these programs is often challenging. This descriptive analysis explores the barriers to enrolling seriously ill patients scheduled for discharge from the ED into palliative care research. METHODS: This descriptive sub-study aims to assess the reasons why patients with advanced illness scheduled for discharge home from 11 EDs across the United States decline to participate in Emer

Diabetes mellitus self-management education at Jimma University Medical Center: evidence-based implementation project.

BACKGROUND: Low and middle-income countries are currently enduring the heaviest global burden of diabetes and diabetes-related mortalities. Diabetes self-management education (DSME) improves patient clinical outcomes, health status, and quality of life. Lack of awareness about best practice guidelines and recommendations may be associated with increased risk of diabetes morbidity and mortality. OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to improve knowledge and skill of healthcare providers and patients with diabetes by enhancing evidence-based practice through self-management education to i

Relationship satisfaction in the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic: A cross-national examination of situational, dispositional, and relationship factors.

The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic has had a large impact on various aspects of life, but questions about its effects on close relationships remain largely unanswered. In the present study, we examined perceived changes in relationship satisfaction at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic by using an international sample of 3,243 individuals from 67 different countries, mostly from Italy, the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. In April and May 2020, participants responded to an online survey that included questions about relationship satisfaction, their s

Personalized treatment - which interaction ingredients should be focused to capture the unconscious.

A recent meta-analysis revealed that mental health and baseline psychological impairment affect the quality of life and outcomes in different chronic conditions. Implementing mental health care in physical care services is still insufficient. Thus, interdisciplinary communication across treatment providers is essential. The standardized language provided by the diagnostic statistical manual favors a clear conceptualization. However, this approach might not focus on the individual, as thinking in categories might impede recognizing the continuum from healthy to diseased. Psychoanalytic theory i

Exertional heat stroke: nutritional considerations.

NEW FINDINGS: What is the topic of this review? The potential role of nutrition in exertional heat stroke. What advances does it highlight? Certain nutritional and dietary strategies used by athletes and workers may exert a protective effect the pathophysiological processes of exertional heat stroke, whereas others may be detrimental. While current evidence suggests that some of these practices may be leveraged as a potential countermeasure to exertional heat stroke, further research on injury-related outcomes in humans is required. ABSTRACT: Exertional heat stroke (EHS) is a life-threatening

Breaking Through Barriers: Factors That Influence Behavior Change Toward Leadership for Women in Academic Medicine.

Under-representation of women in leadership at Academic Medical Centers (AMCs) is a known challenge such that, in 2021, women made up only 28% of department chairs. AMCs are addressing the dearth of women leaders through targeted programming to create leadership pipelines of qualified women. The FLEX Leadership Development Program at the Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) School of Medicine prepares women faculty for increased leadership opportunities. FLEX includes the opportunity to leverage executive coaching to accomplish individual goals. The FLEX program has the explicit goal of incr

An overview of mock interviews as a training tool for interviewers of children.

Mock (simulated) interviews can be used as a safe context for trainee interviewers to learn and practice questioning skills. When mock interviews are designed to reflect the body of scientific evidence on how questioning skills are best learned, research has demonstrated that interviewers acquire relevant and enduring skills. Despite the importance of this exercise in learning interview skill and its prevalence as a learning tool in other fields such as medicine and allied health, there has been relatively little discussion about mock interviews from an educational perspective in investigative

Commentary: Developing Relationships through Trust in Indigenous Health Research.

Developing strong relationships between researchers and Indigenous partners and communities is crucial for mutually beneficial and appropriate Indigenous health research. However, explanations on the need for strong relationships and how they may be achieved are not often found within the research literature. Given the history of mistrust, exploitation and even unethical research practices with Indigenous populations, collaborative research partnerships necessitate good relationships. For our long-standing community-based participatory research partnership, trust in our relationships has been

White patients' physical responses to healthcare treatments are influenced by provider race and gender.

The healthcare workforce in the United States is becoming increasingly diverse, gradually shifting society away from the historical overrepresentation of White men among physicians. However, given the long-standing underrepresentation of people of color and women in the medical field, patients may still associate the concept of doctors with White men and may be physiologically less responsive to treatment administered by providers from other backgrounds. To investigate this, we varied the race and gender of the provider from which White patients received identical treatment for allergic reacti

Long-Term Effects of Developmental Exposure to Oxycodone on Gut Microbiota and Relationship to Adult Behaviors and Metabolism.

Opioid drugs are commonly prescribed analgesic to pregnant women. Direct exposure to such drugs may slow gut motility, alter gut permeability, and affect the gut microbiome. While such drugs affect gut microbiome in infants, no study to date has determined whether developmental exposure to such drugs results in longstanding effects on gut microbiota and correspondingly on host responses. We hypothesized developmental exposure to oxycodone (OXY) leads to enduring effects on gut microbiota and such changes are associated with adult neurobehavioral and metabolic changes. Female mice were treated

(Dis)respect and shame in the context of 'medically unexplained' illness.

A significant proportion of somatic symptoms remain, at present, medically unexplained. These symptoms are common, can affect any part of the body, and can result in a wide range of outcomes-from a minor, transient inconvenience to severe, chronic disability-but medical testing reveals no observable pathology. This paper explores two first-person accounts of so-called 'medically unexplained' illness: one that is published in a memoir, and the other produced during a semi-structured interview. Both texts are revelatory for their expression of shame in the context of encountering disrespect from

Effects of Training on Use of Stimulant Diversion Prevention Strategies by Pediatric Primary Care Providers: Results from a Cluster-Randomized Trial.

Pediatric primary care is a promising setting for reducing diversion of stimulant medications for ADHD. We tested if training pediatric primary care providers (PCPs) increased use of diversion prevention strategies with adolescents with ADHD. The study was a cluster-randomized trial in 7 pediatric primary care practices. Participants were pediatric PCPs (N = 76) at participating practices. Practices were randomized to a 1-h training in stimulant diversion prevention or treatment-as-usual. At baseline, 6 months, 12 months, and 18 months, PCPs rated how often they used four categories of strateg
