When effort fuels risk: Cognitive exertion increases risk-taking for gains but reduces it for losses.

Exerting effort can lead people to engage in risk-taking behaviors. However, this risk-taking after-effect of effort expenditure is primarily observed in scenarios involving gains. It remains unclear how this after-effect is influenced by contextual valence (gain vs. loss contexts). This study addressed this issue in three experiments. Participants performed either a low or high cognitive demanding task during the effort-expenditure phase and then played a risky gambling task during the decision-making phase to obtain gains (Experiment 1), avoid losses (Experiment 2), and obtain gains while av

Non-Invasive Brain Stimulation of the Ventromedial Prefrontal Cortex Improves Behavioral Inhibition by Enhancing the Processing Depth and Anticipation of Outcomes in a Gambling Task.

Disordered gambling and other behavioral addictions are characterized by a lack of behavioral inhibition, such that patients repeatedly make disadvantageous decisions and fail to disengage from maladaptive behavior. Previous research has shown that behavioral addictions are associated with altered ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC) activity, making it an interesting target for neuromodulation. Using a gambling paradigm containing positive and negative expected value trials, we investigated decision-making and feedback processing while stimulating the vmPFC via transcranial direct current s

Synthesising the available evidence to identify the health impact of gambling harm and gambling problems.

Gambling-related harm (GRH) significantly impacts health-related quality of life (HRQoL), though its measurement remains challenging due to varied methodologies. This study synthesises existing research on HRQoL effects of gambling, highlighting the complementary strengths of direct and indirect elicitation methods. We reviewed studies measuring GRH's impact on HRQoL, focusing on the maximum effect of severe problems and the shape of the impact curve across the harm spectrum. Results revealed consistent maximum HRQoL disutility of approximately 0.45 for severe gambling problems in direct elici

Financial Literacy, Locus of Control, and Gambling Behavior in Australia.

This study examines whether financial literacy is associated with reduced gambling risk using a large representative sample of the Australian population in the Household, Income and Labor Dynamics in Australia (HILDA) survey. We analyzed four waves of biennial data from 2016 to 2022 that contain financial literacy and gambling modules, covering 13,358 respondents aged 15 and above, corresponding to 21,140 person-year observations. We found that higher financial literacy was associated with lower gambling risk measured by the Problem Gambling Severity Index (PGSI). Instrumental variable regress

Physiological Evidence Supporting the Emotional Motivation Account of the Ending Effect: Pupil Diameters Increase Toward the End.

The phenomenon of increased risk-taking in the last round of a set of risky decision-making tasks is called the ending effect. Recent empirical studies proposed an emotional motivation account to explain the ending effect. That is, the pursuit of an emotionally satisfying ending leads to the increase of risk-taking. However, previous studies have mostly examined the ending effect at the behavioral level, there is yet no physiological evidence to examine the emotional motivation account. To fill in this gap of knowledge, the current study examined the emotional motivation account at the physiol

A clustering based on the dynamics of DSM-5 criteria for gambling disorder: A 5-year follow-up of gamblers with and without gambling disorder.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Gambling disorder (GD) follows a non-linear progression over time. Beyond shifts between disordered and non-disordered gambling statuses, the presence of each DSM-5 diagnostic criteria for GD may fluctuate throughout a gambler's trajectory. This study aimed to identify clusters of gamblers based on the evolution of the nine GD diagnostic criteria over time and to characterize these clusters using clinical variables. METHODS: Data were drawn from the JEU cohort (NCT01207674), a multicenter study of adult gamblers with and without GD, featuring a five-year follow-up. Partic

Persisting or Worsening Impulse Control Disorders in Parkinson's Disease Following a Switch to Subcutaneous Foslevodopa-Foscarbidopa.

BACKGROUND: Impulse control disorders (ICDs) are most often associated with dopamine agonists and pulsatile dopamine replacement therapy such as oral levodopa and subcutaneous apomorphine. Intestinal levodopa-carbidopa gel may improve ICDs through rationalization of dopaminergic agents and/or a reduction of pulsatile dopaminergic stimulation, however the impact of subcutaneous foslevodopa/foscarbidopa (CSFLI) has not been reported to date. CASES: We describe five men aged 50-68 with advanced Parkinson's disease (PD) and pre-existing ICDs who were switched to CSFLI. Four of them were transitio

Investigating the impact of loss accumulation periods on the predictive relationship between loss chasing and potential gambling harms.

This study builds on a growing body of research seeking to define multidimensional loss chasing. Analyzing data from 36,325 online sports bettors, the focus was to identify which loss accumulation period (loss period; i.e., immediate losses vs. daily, weekly, monthly, and total cumulative losses) maximizes the predictive relationship between loss chasing and diverse potential harm outcomes. We found that the daily loss period yielded the best predictive efficacy for two harm outcomes (loss trajectory and voluntary self-exclusion [VSE]). Loss chasing was not associated with a third harm outcome

Gender-specific risk factors for gambling-related suicidal ideation: Evidence from a help-seeking population.

People suffering from gambling problems are at a heightened risk of suicidal behaviours and ideations. Emerging evidence suggests that gambling-related suicidality may be more common amongst women, those with gambling-related debt and those gambling with fast-paced products such as electronic gambling machines. This study aims to investigate associations between gambling-related suicidal ideations and risk factors using logistic regression analysis. The analyses are conducted separately for women and men. The data consisted of questionnaire responses from 2,800 help-seekers (1,746 men, 1,054 w

Perceptions of Sports Betting and Promotions in the U.S.: Evidence from a Mixed-Methods Sentiment Analysis of YouTube Comments.

This study examines public attitudes toward sports betting and promotions in the United States by analyzing YouTube comments. Using keyword searches, 210 videos were identified, yielding 2,369 comments for analysis. A hybrid approach combining automated BERT sentiment analysis with human-coded content analysis was employed to determine overall sentiment and to identify key themes, endorsers, and sportsbook brands. Results revealed a predominance of negative and neutral sentiments, with positive sentiments least frequent. BERT detected more negative sentiments than the human-coded analysis, whi

Social Comparison Modulates Outcome Evaluation: Neural Mechanisms of Emotional-Cognitive Processing in Gain and Loss Frames.

People usually evaluate themselves in comparison to others, and this can occur in three directions. Upward comparisons occur when comparing oneself to a superior person, parallel comparisons occur when comparing oneself to a similar person, and downward comparisons occur when comparing oneself to an inferior person. The present study explores how social comparison influences individual decision-making and the associated neural mechanisms within gain/loss frames. Using a two-option gambling task, we created an ecologically valid social comparison scenario, implicitly manipulating the three comp

Piecing Together Piecemeal Regulation: Stakeholder Insights Into Joint Statutory Regulation to Reduce Children's Unhealthy Commodity Marketing Exposure in Aotearoa New Zealand.

ISSUE ADDRESSED: Globally, there is growing momentum for statutory marketing regulation over unhealthy commodities (UHC), including alcohol, tobacco, unhealthy food and gambling. These attempts respond to ubiquitous UHC marketing and immense UHC-related harm. Governments' ability to protect people is often undermined by piecemeal regulation for UHCs, despite substantial similarities between the commodities. This article explores Aotearoa New Zealand (NZ) stakeholder perspectives on joint regulation of the marketing of UHCs. METHODS: We interviewed 15 stakeholders from across the UHC policy pr

Uncertainties in measuring offshore gambling: A scoping review of Nordic approaches.

BACKGROUND: A part of online gambling consumption takes place in offshore markets. Lack of regulatory control over offshore offers erodes many public policy and public health objectives. Channelling consumption from offshore markets to regulated markets is therefore used as justification in many gambling policy decisions. Yet, it is currently unknown how reliable existing estimates of the size of offshore markets are. METHODS: This scoping review investigates how offshore gambling markets are measured in the Nordic context and what kinds of uncertainties are involved in existing measures. We

Evidence-based prevention of gambling dual disorder through clinical neuroscience and precision psychiatry.

OBJECTIVE: Gambling is a common activity that becomes problematic in some vulnerable individuals, with gambling disorder (GD) now recognised as a bona fide mental/brain disorder. Several factors are associated with vulnerability to developing GD, including other mental disorders and pathological personality traits like high impulsivity. This clinical condition, referred to as Dual Gambling Disorder (GDD), better captures the broader psychopathological spectrum of GD. METHODS: This narrative review addresses recent advances in neuroscience and psychiatry that can help design more effective pre
