Altered brain glucose metabolism in nicotine use but not in hazardous alcohol consumption or problem gambling of healthy men.

We aimed to determine whether chronic nicotine use, alcohol consumption, and gambling alters brain glucose metabolism. We retrospectively analyzed data from 131 healthy men who participated in health check-ups at Samsung Changwon Hospital Health Promotion Center during 2013 (baseline) and 2018 (follow-up). The health checks included a brain 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (PET), a questionnaire of tobacco use, the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT; Korean version), and the Problem Gambling Severity Index (PGSI). From brain PET scans, the mean uptake in region

Gambling participation and risk over time associated with type of gambling activity: Trends in Australian general population 2015-2022.

There is limited longitudinal data examining national gambling trends in Australia. This study examines longitudinal trends in gambling participation and higher-risk gambling in Australia from 2015 to 2022 using data from the nationally representative Household Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia (HILDA) panel study. Study participants were HILDA respondents aged 15 and older in 2015, 2018, or 2022 who completed the Problem Gambling Severity Index (PGSI; N = 44,836 observations). Gambling participation was based on self-reported typical monthly expenditure on 10 gambling activities. Gambli

Modelling the economic effects of reducing the consumption of unhealthy commodities: An inter-sectoral input-output approach.

AIMS: Industry arguments against public health policies that reduce the consumption of unhealthy commodities often include the assertion that the policy will harm the economy by reducing production and costing jobs. However, this argument does not consider that consumers may spend money previously used for unhealthy commodity consumption on other products, benefiting other sectors and potentially offsetting those negative economic consequences. In this study we aimed to estimate the macroeconomic impacts of reducing consumption of alcohol, tobacco, confectionary and gambling, accounting for re

Reducing gambling harm through digital self-help intervention: a pilot study in mild to moderate gambling disorder.

BACKGROUND: Gambling Disorder (GD) is associated with significant personal and social harms, yet most individuals, especially those with mild to moderate symptoms, do not seek treatment. Online interventions offer an accessible and resource-efficient approach, but their cultural fit and feasibility across contexts remain unclear. This study examined the feasibility, engagement, and perceived cultural compatibility of a brief (1-week) Canadian self-directed gambling intervention among Israeli individuals with mild and moderate GD who were not actively seeking treatment. METHOD: A sample of 102

Mindfulness-based interventions for gambling disorder: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Gambling disorder (GD) presents significant psychological, financial, and social consequences. Mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) have emerged as promising adjunctive treatments. However, the evidence base remains heterogeneous. The present systematic review evaluated the current empirical literature on MBIs for GD, focusing on their efficacy, methodological quality, and limitations. METHODS: Scopus, PubMed, Web of Science, EBSCO, and PsycINFO were searched for English-language studies published between 2012 and April 2025. The final sample comprised 12 studies: five

Gambling and wellbeing: Uneven gains and deficits across risk levels.

Gambling is associated with both enjoyment and harm, yet conventional prevalence measures may understate its wider consequences. Subjective wellbeing data offer a broader lens for understanding how gambling relates to individual welfare. Using nationally representative data from the Health Survey for England, we analyse wellbeing across the gambling risk spectrum. Individuals classified as problem gamblers report markedly lower wellbeing than non-gamblers, with a deficit around twice as large as the gap associated with unemployment, conditional on other life circumstances. Wellbeing is also lo

Effects of Psychological Interventions on Itch, Scratching, and Excoriations: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

Psychological interventions reduce itch in patients with skin diseases. However, previous systematic reviews and meta-analyses did not include patients with non-skin-related chronic itch and did not consider excoriations as outcome. This study therefore summarized randomized controlled trials investigating effects of psychological interventions on itch, scratching, and excoriations in patients with chronic itch due to all causes. A systematic literature search was conducted. A random effects model was used to aggregate between-group effect sizes. It was found that 17 of the 20 trials included

Parental Influence on Adolescent Gambling: the Role of Communication, Rules, and Social Support.

Adolescent gambling has reached unprecedented levels in recent years, warranting research attention due to its links with other risk behaviors and mental health issues. This study focuses on the risk and protective factors in parent-adolescent relationships affecting gambling behaviors in Swedish adolescents. We investigated the role of parenting practices, parental gambling issues, and parental attitudes toward gambling. Participants included 553 upper secondary school students who completed an online survey about gambling, parental behaviors and attitudes, and parent–child communication. The

The role of executive functions and cognitive estimation in decision-making: a study with patients with prefrontal cortex damage.

Evidence remained conflicting regarding how the prefrontal cortex supported decision-making abilities, particularly in patients with focal prefrontal cortex lesions. While damage to this region was known to impair executive functioning, the precise contribution of such deficits to decision-making performance - especially under varying levels of uncertainty - remained debated. Moreover, cognitive estimation processes, which were associated with logical reasoning and prefrontal involvement, had rarely been examined in relation to decision-making tasks. To clarify these associations, we administe

Protocol for a randomized controlled trial to evaluate the efficacy of inhibitory control training for aggressive behaviours among individuals with co-occurring substance use disorder and gambling behaviour.

BACKGROUND: Aggression, substance use, and gambling behaviour often co-occur in a larger pattern of dysregulated behaviour. One of the factors that may underlie this phenomenon is impaired inhibitory control. Inhibitory Control Training (ICT) is an alternative intervention being tested for addressing addictive behaviours by targeting inhibitory control. Given the shared underlying mechanisms of these behaviours, applying ICT to aggression represents a possible extension of this intervention. This research will mark the first implementation of a cognitive bias modification approach to managing

Helping Others Promote Engagement in Gambling Support (HOPE-Gam): a Feasibility Randomised Controlled Trial.

Problem gambling (PG) causes significant harm yet help-seeking rates remain low. Concerned significant others (CSOs) may play a pivotal role in motivating treatment-refusing gamblers to seek help. The Helping Others Promote Engagement in Gambling Support (HOPE-Gam) intervention was developed to support CSOs in this role. This pilot randomised controlled trial assessed its feasibility and acceptability. Secondary aims included preliminary exploration of efficacy signals and refinement of trial procedures for a future large-scale study. The trial was registered retrospectively on 03/09/25 with A

Identifying Key Correlates of Problem Sports Betting in Young Adults: A Machine Learning Approach.

Problem sports betting is an increasing public health concern, especially among young adults who are developmentally vulnerable to gambling-related harm. Although past studies have identified correlates of sports betting harm, most have not accounted for the potential influence of wide ranges of other variables in multivariable models. This study applied machine learning to identify the most influential predictors of problem sports betting in a sample of 221 young adults (ages 18–29; 77% male) from 35 U.S. states who reported recent engagement in sports betting. Two machine learning algorithms

Smelling decides: fMRI evidence reveals the influence of olfactory stimuli on risky decision-making.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Olfactory stimuli are known to have a significant effect on cognitive functions. However, their effect on risky decision-making remains unclear. The present study aimed to investigate this effect, using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and a novel mixed gambling task. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-nine healthy participants with normal olfactory function underwent fMRI scanning while performing a gambling task under exposure to pleasant and unpleasant odors, as well as fresh air and a neutral condition without any olfactory stimulation. ROI-to-ROI functional

Decision for self and other modulates risk attitude and electrophysiological processing: evidence from a behavioral and electrophysiological experiment.

Understanding how people make risky decisions for others compared to themselves is central to decision neuroscience. However, the cognitive and neural underpinnings of such self-other shifts in risk preference-and the mechanisms driving individual differences-remain unclear. To address this, we employed a mixed gambling task with feedback in which participants made risky decisions for themselves and for others while electroencephalography was recorded. Although individuals generally exhibited similar patterns across agents, decisions made for others were associated with a higher degree of risk

When Gaming Becomes Like Gambling: The Role of Flow, Immersion, Craving, and Self-control in Risky Loot Box use among Polish gamers.

Loot boxes are in-game items offering randomised rewards, often purchased with real money, and share structural similarities with gambling. Risky loot box use (RLBU) has been associated with gaming disorder (GD) symptoms, gambling-related cognitions, and financial harms. This study examined psychological correlates of RLBU in a sample of Polish gamers. A cross-sectional online survey was conducted among 433 active gamers (216 female, M = 26.95 years, SD = 4.80), who had used loot boxes in the past 12 months. Participants completed measures of RLBU, GD symptoms, craving for gaming, self-control

The Prototype Willingness Model of Sports Betting: A Yearlong Within-Person Study of Young Adults.

Burgeoning evidence of sports betting harms among young adults highlights the need to refine our understanding of psychosocial processes driving sports betting behavior. This study longitudinally examined sports betting patterns over time within the Prototype Willingness Model (PWM), a dual-process behavioral model comprised of both a reasoned and socially reactive component. Participants included 210 18-29 year olds (77.1% male; mean age 24.5) who reported placing at least two sports bets in the past month (at screening). Participants reported past two-week sports betting frequency (i.e., num
