Development of lower-risk guidelines for online sports and race betting in Australia using objective behavioural data.

BACKGROUND: Lower risk gambling guidelines provide clear, actionable advice for reducing the risk associated with gambling by specifying behaviour associated with non-harmful use. Here we aimed to develop lower-risk guidelines specific to online sports and race betting in Australia that Currie (Addiction 112:2011-20, 2017) captured behaviours unique to this activity associated with high risk of experiencing gambling harms (e.g., depositing frequency, number of sports & races bet on) and Currie (Health Promot 34:1207-17, 2019) were based on objective behavioural data from a gambling operator no

Gambling, smoking and alcohol use in Great Britain: insights from the 2023 Gambling Survey of Great Britain.

Gambling often co-occurs with tobacco smoking and alcohol use, which likely exacerbates the physical, psychological, and financial harm that each of them cause. Using 2023 Gambling Survey for Great Britain (GSGB; n = 9742) data, we ran generalized linear models (adjusted for sex, age, income, housing tenure and ethnicity) to assess associations between i) risk or severity of gambling problems (Problem Gambling severity Index [PGSI], and reported overspend or ignoring spend limits), and ii) attempts to reduce gambling, with alcohol consumption (Alcohol Use Dependence Test for Consumption [AUDIT

The association between gambling frequency and risk of harm: Analysis using health survey data from England and Scotland.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Health economic models can be used to assess the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of public health policies for gambling. To develop such a model, we must understand how gambling behaviour is associated with risk of experiencing gambling-related harms. This study aimed to: (1) assess the strength of association between gambling frequency and the risk of gambling-related harm and to examine how these associations differ when lottery-only players are excluded; (2) apply the study's findings in a hypothetical policy model aimed at reducing gambling frequency. DESIGN: Obs

Diminishing loss sensitivity during risky decision-making among male individuals with gambling disorder.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Gambling disorder (GD) poses severe impacts on both individuals and society. Impairment in risky decision-making is a key behavioral characteristic of GD, but the underlying cognitive processes of these deficits remain unclear. METHODS: A total of 100 male participants with GD and 59 healthy controls were recruited to complete psychological assessments and the Balloon Analog Risk Task. Since GD involved abnormal loss evaluation, we developed a novel cognitive model incorporating diminishing loss sensitivity and revealed the processes underlying the risk-taking behaviors w

Mind-Wandering Enhances Learning under Uncertainty: Insights from Iowa Gambling Task.

Mind-wandering refers to the shift of attention towards task-unrelated thoughts. The current study aims to explore the impact of mind-wandering on learning and decision-making under uncertain circumstances. This study investigated the interplay of trait (spontaneous and deliberate) and state mind-wandering on learning and decision making using the Iowa Gambling Task. Intermittent thought probes were used to measure state mind wandering, and a standardised 8-item mind-wandering questionnaire was used to measure trait mind wandering. Results revealed that participants demonstrated enhanced learn

Is Overconfidence a Risk Factor for Excessive Trading?

Gambling and trading involve similar risks and can be practiced excessively. No study has addressed cognitive distortions in excessive trading during decision-making in experimental task, though the illusion of control is well established in gambling. Overconfidence, closely related to the illusion of control, may be a cognitive factor in excessive trading. Overconfidence is a construct including overestimation, overplacement and overprecision. This study investigated the relationship between overconfidence in simulated financial decision-making involving technical analysis and the likelihood

The Need for Benchmarks to Advance AI-Enabled Player Risk Detection in Gambling.

Artificial intelligence-based systems for player risk detection have become central to harm prevention efforts in the gambling industry. However, growing concerns around transparency and effectiveness have highlighted the absence of standardized methods for evaluating the quality and impact of these tools. This makes it impossible to gauge true progress; even as new systems are developed, their comparative effectiveness remains unknown. We argue the critical next innovation is developing a framework to measure these systems. This paper proposes a conceptual benchmarking framework to support th

Regulatory Failures of the Corporate Casino Model: A Commentary on Anthony Cabot's Casino Redux.

The corporatization of the casino industry represents one of gambling regulation’s great success stories. Through comprehensive licensing regimes, background investigations, and corporate ownership laws, regulators successfully displaced direct organized crime control that characterized mid-twentieth century casinos. Yet Anthony Cabot’s Casino Redux: Unveiling the Global Casino Network of Chinese Organized Crime (2025) reveals that this corporate model has generated its own systemic vulnerabilities. Drawing on Cabot’s archival examination of regulatory failures across multiple jurisdictions, t

Identifying Predictors of Gambling Episodes and Craving Using Ecological Momentary Assessment and Smartwatch-Based Physiological Measures: Protocol for a Longitudinal Observational Study.

BACKGROUND: Like other addictive behaviors, problem gambling is often chronic and relapsing. While digital interventions offer low-threshold treatment and support, their effectiveness is often limited by small effect sizes, low adherence, and high dropout rates. Progress in digital technology has enabled the development of ecological momentary interventions (EMIs), which provide just-in-time support tailored to users' needs. However, EMIs for addictive behaviors have hardly been developed so far. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore and identify relevant predictors of gambling episodes asse

Individual and Neighborhood Risk and Protective Factors of At-Risk and Problem Gambling: a Spatial Analysis Using Geographic Information Systems.

This study investigated the relationship between lottery gambling and postal codes where this gambling occurs, along with individual-level characteristics predicting at-risk or problem gambling (ARPG) among Massachusetts residents. A geographic information systems (GIS) spatial analysis was conducted to identify vulnerable areas based on neighborhood characteristics, lottery sales, and ARPG. GIS methods involved geocoding lottery agent addresses and integrating them into a geodatabase, enabling precise spatial analysis and visualization. This approach allowed us to examine spatial patterns in

Health response to problematic usage of the internet: A global survey on trends, available treatments and key challenges.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Problematic usage of the internet (PUI) is a growing global concern, emerging among more than 5.3 billion people who use the internet worldwide. While specific forms such as online gaming and gambling are recognized as disorders or conditions for further study in diagnostic manuals, global data on prevalence, treatment, and health responses to PUI remain limited. This study aimed to obtain perspectives from representatives of addiction medicine/psychiatry societies regarding the scope, treatment, and health responses to PUI and identify gaps. METHODS: A global survey was

More frequent use of live sports-betting features is associated with increased risk of gambling harm: Evidence from a case-control design.

BACKGROUND: Many theories of gambling harm propose that some design features of interactive sports-betting platforms confer a risk of harm by enabling cyclical patterns of repeated gambling engagement. This exploratory study investigated whether such features were used more frequently by people at higher risk of gambling harm relative to a demographically matched lower-risk control group. METHODS: This study used a case-control design to compare 85 people at higher risk of gambling harm (PGSI 5+) with an age- and gender-matched control group at lower risk of harm (n = 84, PGSI 0-4). We compar

Neural investigation of default effects on decision-making under uncertainty.

Default options have increasingly become a common tool for policymakers in guiding individuals’ behaviors. However, the neural mechanisms of default effects on decision-making, particularly in uncertain situations, remain unclear. In the present study, participants were asked to decide whether to stick with the default options in a gambling task, and their scalp potentials were recorded. The behavioral results indicated that the default effects did exist, given that participants demonstrated a significantly higher likelihood of selecting uncertain payoffs when these were presented as default o

Online Personalized Normative Feedback to Foster Intention to Change and Help Seeking in Young Adults With Disordered Gambling and Trading Behaviors: Protocol for a Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Despite the availability of treatment options, help-seeking rates among individuals with gambling problems remain low. To reach a broader population of those affected by disordered gambling, online and self-guided interventions have been developed. Personalized normative feedback (PNF) is one of the most widely used strategies for preventing gambling issues among young adults. However, most studies on PNF efficacy focus solely on its impact on the intensity and severity of gambling behavior, without exploring its potential to increase intention to change and help-seeking behaviors.

Substance and Behavioural Addictions Among Evacuees: Findings From Israeli Swords of Iron War.

War-related evacuation is a stressful event that may cause mental health problems, which, in turn, might lead to increases in substance and behavioural addictions. We used data collected online during the Swords of Iron to examine associations between being evacuated during the war, mental health, problematic substance use, and behavioural addictions. Study 1 surveyed young adults (ages 18-26) from various areas of Israel. Measures included self-reported anxiety, depression, problematic consumption of alcohol, cannabis, and prescription drugs, and problematic gambling, gaming, and pornography.

Polysubstance and Single Substance Use Among Adults: Is Gambling a Differentiating Factor?

INTRODUCTION: The use of multiple substances including binge drinking and other substances - often referred to as polysubstance use - is generally associated with worse treatment outcomes. There has been limited research on the relationship between gambling behaviors and polysubstance use. OBJECTIVES: This study examined demographic and behavioral attributes including engagement in gambling activities in relation to polysubstance use. METHODS: Data came from a population-based sample of adults from the state of Iowa (n = 3,843). Multinomial regression using a logit link was used to model pol

Help-seeking for gambling problems following expansion of Ontario's online gambling market and legalization of single-event sports betting.

BACKGROUND: Online gambling and sports betting have recently been legalized and expanded in North America. We aimed to evaluate long-term changes in the frequency of gambling-related helpline contacts in the province of Ontario following the launch of a government-operated online gambling platform (PlayOLG) in January 2015 and the expansion of private online gambling, including single-event sports betting, in April 2022. METHODS: We conducted an interrupted time-series analysis of contacts with Ontario's free 24-hour mental health and addictions helpline (ConnexOntario) between January 2012 a

Effects of Initial Experiences on Risky Choice.

When people make risky choices based on prior experience, biases in learning and memory can affect their preferences. One such bias is the primacy effect, whereby outcomes experienced during initial learning disproportionately affect later memory and choice. Here, we investigated potential primacy effects with two features of risky options: outcome probability and relative value. In the first two experiments (total N = 382), the order of experiencing different outcome probabilities was varied across three groups, and neither experiment revealed any primacy effects. In the last experiment (tota
