An uneven playing field: a mixed methods, multiphase feasibility study of a programme to reduce gambling among at-risk men in a professional football club setting.

BACKGROUND: Sports betting is a growth area for the gambling industry, with football fans a key target of advertising. Men are particularly at risk from gambling harm. The 8-week Football Fans and Betting (FFAB) intervention was designed for delivery in professional football clubs by club community coaches to reduce sports betting and other forms of gambling among men aged 18–55 with a PGSI score of < 15. This paper reports the acceptability and feasibility of delivering FFAB in England. METHODS: We conducted a multiphase, mixed methods, feasibility study of the FFAB intervention, assessing fe

Gambling disorder as a risk factor for suicidal ideation in medical students.

Although suicide rates among physicians have decreased, medical students remain at high risk for suicidal ideation. While poor mental health, including depression, burnout, and stress, are well-documented contributing factors, the role of behavioral addictions, particularly gambling disorder, remains underexplored. This study aims to identify risk and protective factors associated with recent suicidal ideation among second- to fourth-year medical students, including gambling disorder. An observational study was conducted among medical students at a French University, recruited in December 2021

'Out of sight, out of mind' - results of a focus group study on gamblers' use and evaluation of player protection measures in Germany.

BACKGROUND: The growing prevalence of gambling-related problems underscores the importance of effective player protection measures and highlights gambling addiction prevention as a critical public health challenge. However, the perspective of gamblers has so far rarely been taken into account in the development of player protection measures in Germany. Furthermore, research indicates that gamblers’ awareness and use of available information and support services for gambling problems are relatively low to moderate. METHODS: To address this gap, a focus group study was conducted with a total of

Cutting the odds: Understanding non-suicidal self-injury patterns among people gambling online.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) and gambling are considered notable public health challenges, each linked to emotion dysregulation, impulsivity, and heightened mental health risks. Although examined separately, their co-occurrence may reflect overlapping vulnerabilities. The present study examined the prevalence, correlates, and predictors of NSSI among ndividuals who gamble online and identified distinct behavioral subgroups using latent class analysis. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among individuals with past-year online gambling (N = 1047; 50% males; m

Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy for Adolescents With Impulsive Aggressive Behaviour: A Randomised Controlled Trial.

INTRODUCTION: Impulsive aggressive behaviour is highly prevalent among children and adolescents referred to mental health clinics. However, there is limited evidence-based psychotherapeutic interventions for its treatment. This study examined the effectiveness of cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) for adolescents with intermittent explosive disorder (IED). METHODS: This randomised controlled trial employed a pre-test/post-test design with a 3-month follow-up. Forty-two adolescents diagnosed with IED were recruited through purposive sampling and randomly assigned to either a CBT intervention

Motivations for gambling and problem gambling: A systematic review and methodological critique.

OBJECTIVE: Over the past 20 years, motivational models of gambling have emerged that highlight the influence of different gambling motives on problem gambling. Given that no comprehensive review exists on the topic, the purpose of the present work was initially to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis of the empirical literature published up to May 2025 on the relationship between gambling motivations and problem gambling. METHOD: This systematic review followed Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines, querying databases for empirical, quantitativ

A latent class analysis of public opinions about gambling policy goals: a population-based survey in Finland.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: The significance of a reciprocal link between public opinion and policy making is widely acknowledged in literature. The aim of this study is to explore public opinion on gambling policy by identifying distinct latent classes of attitudes towards policy goals. The findings can provide insights into future gambling regulation and policy making. METHODS: Data were derived from a 2023 population-based Finnish Gambling Study (n = 5977) representing the population aged 15-74-year-olds. A set of questions regarding gambling policy attitudes were measured. By using a latent class a

Gambling and Substance Use: Early Evidence From Sports Betting Laws.

Previous research documents a strong association between gambling and substance use, suggesting that these seemingly distinct behaviors may share similar environmental, neurobiological, and genetic causes. However, there is a dearth of credible empirical evidence on whether gambling has a causal impact on substance use or vice versa. This paper estimates the impact of gambling on substance use making use of the rapid roll-out of sports betting laws across US states. Using data from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System and a difference-in-difference (DID) estimation strategy to assess

"They make it seem harmless": a qualitative investigation into women's perceptions about novel gambling promotions and public relations strategies.

BACKGROUND: The gambling industry uses a range of marketing strategies to increase the appeal and normalisation of their products. While there has been significant focus on how the gambling industry targets young men, there is evidence that the industry is increasingly using innovative marketing strategies to appeal to women. This study aimed to explore young women’s views about gambling promotions and public relations strategies, and their potential impact on women’s gambling attitudes and behaviours. METHODS: An online qualitative survey was conducted with n = 525 women aged 18–40 years livi

Gambling disorder in the context of couple relationships: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, Gambling Disorder (GD) has gained increasing attention in psychological and neuroscientific research due to its significant behavioral, social, and economic consequences. GD shares core features with substance addictions, including craving, tolerance, and withdrawal, and is influenced by a complex interplay of genetic, neurobiological, and environmental factors. The couple's context plays a pivotal role in both the development and management of GD, as dysfunctional relational dynamics can perpetuate the disorder, leading to instability, chronic stress, financial di

Effects of sensory feedback on simulated online slot machine gambling.

OBJECTIVE: A prominent feature of land-based and online slot machines is audiovisual feedback that accompanies winning outcomes. Prior laboratory work suggests that this design feature may influence game experience, facilitate immersion, increase arousal, and promote riskier decision making, but whether this generalizes to realistic gambling products remains unclear. In this preregistered study, we used a realistic slot machine simulator, deployed online, to evaluate effects of win-accompanying sensory feedback (SF) on gambling experience and behavior. METHOD: Participants were recruited via

Positive emotional harm prevention (safer) gambling messages: Results of an online experiment.

OBJECTIVE: The United Kingdom is set to replace gambling industry slogans such as "gamble responsibly" with independently designed messages. One of the seven independently designed Australian messages is a positive emotional message, intended to leverage positive feelings to enact behavioral change. This study sought to compare this and other proposed positive emotional messages against novel alternatives. METHOD: U.K.-based gamblers (N = 4,204) rated 10 positive emotional messages on four Likert scales (e.g., "this message makes me want to gamble less"; "this message is relevant to me") and

Transcranial alternating current stimulation over left DLPFC modulates feedback processing: a simultaneous tACS-fMRI study.

Studies have shown that reward-related feedback is processed by distinct brain networks. Neuronal oscillations, particularly theta and beta rhythms, play a key role in facilitating communications within these networks. This study investigated how modulating brain oscillations at theta and beta frequencies using transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) influences activation in brain regions involved in feedback processing. In three separate sessions, 28 healthy participants received either theta (5 Hz), beta (25 Hz), or sham tACS over the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) w

Direct gambling marketing, direct harm: A randomised experiment.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Whether gambling marketing has a causal effect on harm is of regulatory interest. Direct marketing offers (emails, push notifications and text messages) are frequently received by people with active gambling accounts, but they can opt out. This study aimed to test whether opting out of direct marketing reduces betting and short-term gambling harms in a real-world gambling environment. DESIGN: Stratified randomised field experiment with a between-participants design, embedded in a 14-day ecological momentary assessment (EMA). SETTING: Nationwide, Australia (July-August 20

The Problematic Behaviour Scale (PBS-5): A brief measure for the population-level screening of non-substance-bound addictive behaviours and Swiss national prevalence rates.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The Assessment of Criteria for Specific Internet-use Disorders (ACSID-11; Müller et al. 2022) offers a promising instrument to screen addictive disorders in population-wide surveys based on ICD-11 criteria. We evaluated this scale in the Swiss context and propose the shorter Problematic Behaviour Scale (PBS-5). METHODS: We included ACSID-11 in the Swiss survey "Health and Lifestyle" (SHL) 2023 (n = 5,995) in German, French and Italian for social media use, shopping, gaming, gambling, and pornography use. We assessed psychometric characteristics of PBS-5. Classification qu

Patterns and Correlates of Co-occurring Smoking, Alcohol Use, Gambling, and High Internet Use Among University Students: A Cross-Sectional Study in Türkiye.

University life may facilitate multiple addictive behaviors that tend to cluster rather than occur in isolation. The aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence and co-occurrence patterns of daily cigarette smoking, past-30-day alcohol use, gambling, and high daily internet use, and to evaluate their sociodemographic and behavioral associations among undergraduate students in Türkiye. This cross-sectional study was conducted at Inonu University (Malatya, Türkiye) between February-May 2024. Using stratified random sampling, n = 366 students were included. Outcomes were daily smoking, past-

The Social Iowa Gambling Task: a promising tool for assessing deception detection in real-world contexts in adulthood.

OBJECTIVES: Deception detection represents a complex form of social decision making under uncertainty with real-world consequences. Yet reliable tools to identify vulnerability to fraud and exploitation, marked by large individual variability, particularly among older adults, remain limited. Using a short, scalable laboratory task, the Social Iowa Gambling Task (sIGT), we tested whether adaptive social decision making predicts interpersonal and technologically mediated deception detection. METHODS: Younger and older adults from a single cohort (Lie Task: N = 153; Deepfake Task: N = 149) compl

All-cause and cause-specific mortality in gambling disorder: Evidence from a nation-wide matched and sibling cohort study in Taiwan.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Gambling disorder (GD) has been linked to suicidal ideation and suicide deaths; however, evidence on all-cause and cause-specific mortality-particularly in Asian populations-remains limited. Using a retrospective cohort study based on nationwide matched and sibling cohort, we investigated all-cause and cause-specific mortality risk in patients with GD. DESIGN, SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted using 2000-2022 data from Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database. A cohort of 961 individuals diagnosed with GD was identified. An a

Metabotropic glutamate receptor 5 in the anterior cingulate cortex predicts individual differences in motor impulsivity but not in risky decision-making.

Impulsivity is a multidimensional construct implicated in various psychiatric disorders, yet its neurobiological underpinnings are insufficiently understood. The metabotropic glutamate receptor type 5 (mGluR5) has emerged as a promising target for modulating impulsive behavior, but whether impulsivity is associated with alterations in mGluR5 availability is unknown. Here, we investigated mGluR5 availability in relation to different impulsivity constructs in male Roman high- (RHA) and low-avoidance (RLA) rat lines, which exhibit divergent impulsive profiles. Motor impulsivity and risky decision
