Neural processing of win-contingent audiovisual cues during virtual gambling: an fMRI cross-over study.

RATIONALE: Over the last 30 years, the global incidence and prevalence of gambling disorder (GD) have risen, with particularly high risk associated with slot machine gambling. Win-contingent audiovisual stimuli are considered a key mechanism that may promote risky decision-making during gambling. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to investigate whether win‑contingent audiovisual cues modulate risky decision-making and neural responses during a virtual slot-machine task in healthy volunteers. METHODS: In a randomized cross-over design, N = 20 right-handed healthy volunteers completed a virtual slo

Aberrant striatal firing mediates impulsive decision-making in a mouse model of Parkinson's disease.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is characterized by progressive neurodegeneration, which is associated with motor and non-motor symptoms. Dopamine replacement therapy can remediate motor symptoms, but can also cause impulse control disorder (ICD), characterized by pathological gambling, hypersexuality and/or compulsive shopping. Approximately 14%-40% of all medicated PD patients suffer from ICD. Despite the high prevalence of ICD in medicated PD patients, we know little of its mechanisms, and the main therapeutic strategy is reducing or eliminating dopamine agonist medication. Human imaging studies s

[Hypersexuality in Parkinson's Disease].

Patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) often develop hypersexuality. Hypersexuality occurs in impulse control disorders (ICD), which are caused by dopamine replacement therapy. Hypersexuality becomes a burden for patients, their spouses, and caregivers and worsens their quality of life. Hypersexuality occurs in approximately 3-8% of patients with PD and tends to occur in young male patients. Other risk factors for hypersexuality in PD include cognitive impairment, a history of depression or pathological gambling, and impulsive or novelty-seeking personality traits. Dopamine agonists are more l

A Systematic Review of Personality Disorders in Patients with Gambling Disorder.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Gambling disorder (GD) is characterized by a high prevalence of co-occurring psychiatric disorders, including personality disorders (PDs), which may negatively influence clinical presentation, treatment outcomes, and relapse rates. The aim of this systematic review was to synthesize recent evidence regarding the association between GD and formally diagnosed PD and/or diagnostically anchored PD symptomatology, and to describe the main personality dimension most frequently reported in affected individuals. METHODS: A systematic search was conducted in the PubMed and Dialn

Associations Between Gambling Motives and More Severe Gambling Disorder - Does Gender Matter?

Gambling Disorder (GD) is a behavioural addiction with complex, detrimental psychological, economic, and social consequences. Previous research has examined gender differences in the prevalence of distinct gambling motives and has linked gambling motives to at-risk behaviour. Whether motives affect probabilities of transition to higher GD severity levels differently in males and females remains unclear. Using an online self-test, we assessed the prevalence distinct GD severity levels according to the DSM-5 criteria and gambling motives with items addressing domains of the "Gambling Motives Que

Translation and Adaptation of the Online Gambling Disorder Questionnaire (OGD-Q) into Brazilian Portuguese.

Online gambling has grown increasingly popular over the past decade, especially since the COVID-19 pandemic. Online gamblers tend to face more issues than those who gamble in traditional settings, leading to a higher risk of developing pathological gambling. In Brazil, gambling activities are culturally accepted and normalized, which encourages widespread participation among the population. Therefore, screening and assessing online gambling is now a public necessity. The Online Gambling Disorder Questionnaire (OGD-Q), developed by González-Cabrera et al. (2020), aims to evaluate symptoms of ga

A clinical perspective of Gambling Dual Disorder: an italian cross-sectional multicenter study.

INTRODUCTION: Gambling Dual Disorder (GDD) is a proposed clinical construct describing the co-occurrence of Gambling Disorder (GD) with other psychiatric conditions. Although preliminary evidence supports this model, clinical data remain limited. This multicenter, cross-sectional Italian study aimed to further characterize GDD by comparing patients with GD only and those with co-occurring psychiatric disorders. METHODS: A total of 227 outpatients diagnosed with GD were consecutively recruited from two specialized psychiatric clinics in Milan. Patients were stratified into two subgroups: GD-on

Off-label and investigational drugs in the treatment of gambling disorder: a critical review.

Gambling disorder or pathological gambling is a psychiatric disorder with severe and wide-ranging consequences for the affected individual and their surroundings. While no pharmacological treatment has yet been officially approved for treatment, various drugs have been investigated to date. The State of Gambling Behaviors Among NCAA Student-Athletes: Findings from Five Waves of the National Study on Collegiate Wagering (2004-2024).

Technological advances and regulatory changes have substantially expanded access to sports wagering in the United States, raising concerns about gambling behaviors among collegiate athletes. Since 2004, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) has conducted a large-scale survey every four years to monitor gambling behaviors among student-athletes. The present study examined trends in gambling among NCAA student-athletes over a twenty-year period. Data were drawn from five waves of the NCAA National Study on Collegiate Wagering conducted in 2004, 2008, 2012, 2016, and 2024. Across th

The developmental path to gambling disorder among U.S. veterans: a life-course perspective.

INTRODUCTION: Gambling disorder (GD) is characterized by persistent gambling behavior associated with significant distress and functional impairment. Pathways to GD reflect a complex interplay of individual, environmental, and experiential factors. United States (U.S.) veterans are considered particularly vulnerable due to heightened exposure to trauma and cumulative life stressors. In a qualitative study examining barriers to treatment among veterans, participants described various risk factors contributing to GD, prompting a secondary analysis to better identify the unique risk factors shapi

Professionals' Perspectives On the Role of Advanced Technologies in Responsible Gambling.

Problematic gambling is associated with substantial individual and societal harms, which may be intensified by the accessibility, anonymity, and captivating design of online gambling products. In this domain, advanced technologies (e.g., artificial intelligence and data analytics) are increasingly recommended for prevention, early detection, and harm reduction. This study aimed to examine the current and potential uses of advanced technologies in gambling. Forty-five semi-structured interviews were conducted with social/legal science (n = 24) and technology (n = 21) experts. Data were analysed

Background/Objectives: Gambling disorder is recognized as a behavioral addiction, and gambling-related problems represent an important public health concern among young adults. However, evidence regarding their association with overall diet quality, particularly adherence to the Mediterranean diet (MedDiet), remains scarce. This exploratory secondary analysis examined whether screening indicators of gambling-related problems were associated with MedDiet adherence in young adults. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of 496 participants aged 18-34 years from the EVA-Adic study. MedD

Impulsivity, Compulsivity, Social Inappropriateness, and Other Neuropsychiatric Features in Cerebellar Histiocytosis.

Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) may present with cerebellar and brainstem lesions associated with ataxia, cognitive impairment, and behavioral symptoms. While neuropsychiatric manifestations have been reported in LCH, little attention has been paid to impulsivity, compulsivity, and social inappropriateness in the context of cerebellar involvement. We describe six patients with multisystem LCH who developed neurological and psychiatric disturbances in association with cerebellar abnormalities on magnetic resonance imaging.
