Pathological gambling among high school students.

Eight hundred and ninety-two high school students from four New Jersey high schools were given a questionnaire concerning their gambling behavior. Ninety-one percent of the students had gambled at least once in their lifetime, 86% gambled in the last year and 32% gambled at least once a week. Using an index which was validated in other research (Lesieur, Blume, & Zoppa, 1986) 5.7% of the students showed clear signs of pathological gambling. The pathological gambling signs index was found to be correlated with sex, parental gambling problems, grade average, and the extent of gambling by the stu

Follow-up of pathological gamblers after treatment.

Pathological gamblers entering a comprehensive treatment program were thoroughly assessed before treatment and 6 months after completion of treatment. The reports of gamblers and collateral informants were highly consistent. Follow-up interviews were conducted with 57 of the 66 patients entering treatment. Total abstinence was reported by 56% (N = 32) of the patients located for follow-up, and significant improvement on a wide range of measures was documented. The authors feel that the results demonstrate that pathological gambling is a treatable mental disorder.

The South Oaks Gambling Screen (SOGS): a new instrument for the identification of pathological gamblers.

The South Oaks Gambling Screen is a 20-item questionnaire based on DSM-III criteria for pathological gambling. It may be self-administered or administered by nonprofessional or professional interviewers. A total of 1,616 subjects were involved in its development: 867 patients with diagnoses of substance abuse and pathological gambling, 213 members of Gamblers Anonymous, 384 university students, and 152 hospital employees. Independent validation by family members and counselors was obtained for the calibration sample, and internal consistency and test-retest reliability were established. The in

Attention deficit disorder and pathological gambling.

To examine the possibility that pathological gambling is related to the deficits in impulse control associated with attention deficit disorder, 14 pathological gamblers and 16 controls were administered questionnaires concerning their childhood behaviors. These self-reports indicated a strong correlation between pathological gambling and childhood behaviors related to attention deficit disorder.

Alcoholism, drug abuse, and gambling.

Patients in an alcoholism and drug dependency treatment facility were questioned about their gambling behavior in order to find out what percentage of them were abusing alcohol and/or drugs and gambling. In order to do this, a pathological gambling signs index was constructed according to a modification of DSM III criteria and validated using independent procedures. Out of 458 patients interviewed, 40 (9%) were diagnosed as pathological gamblers and an additional 47 (10%) showed signs of problematic gambling. These patients showed clear signs of emotional, financial, family and occupational di

[Dependence on gambling].

The indicated symptomatology of pathological gambling makes clear that a reduction of the problematic nature of addiction to substance dependence - alcohol, illegal drugs and medicaments - is not valid. Beside the consumption of substance, gambling as well can produce the desired effect, cause pleasant sensations or avoid aversion and addictive behavior can develop. Biological, psychological and sociological theories of pathological gambling are presented, each of which does not serve as a convincing frame of arguments. On the contrary considerations have to be based on an interaction between

Pathological gambling and criminal responsibility.

There exists significant interdisciplinary support for eliminating the volitional component of the insanity defense. Somewhat in contrast to this trend is the presentation of pathological gambling as a potentially exculpatory condition in criminal trials. The authors discuss three federal appellate court decisions on this attempted inappropriate usage of psychiatric diagnostic nomenclature. All have upheld convictions, and thereby rejected contentions that such an impulse disorder can form the basis for a valid plea of lack of criminal responsibility. It is suggested that the public interest w

Pathological gambling and major affective disorder: preliminary findings.

Twenty-five pathological gamblers were examined for additional DSM-III diagnoses and family history of psychiatric illness. Eighteen subjects (72%) had experienced at least one episode of major depression, and 13 (52%) had recurrent major affective episodes. A high prevalence (20%) of panic disorder and/or agoraphobia was also found.

Pathological gambling.

According to DSM-III criteria, pathological gambling is now recognised as a mental illness. Epidemiological data suggest that the incidence of this disorder in the general population varies from 0.5% to 1%. However, until recently, psychiatrists and clinical psychologists have tended to neglect the problem because of a lack of understanding of its aetiology and management. This paper describes pathological gambling and presents an overview of current psychiatric treatments. It concludes that behavioural interventions are the most effective treatments for compulsive gamblers.

Arousal and sensation-seeking components in the general explanation of gambling and gambling addictions.

Following upon the first clear experimental evidence that states of high arousal accompany gambling in real-life situations, an attempt is made to clarify the implications of this new finding for the development of two possible forms of a neo-Pavlovian or classical conditioning addition to the traditional emphasis on operant conditioning in behavioral explanations of gambling. The explanatory scope and power of one (biological hedonist) version of the model is then demonstrated as applied to both normal regular and pathological gambling. The role of arousal and sensation-seeking factors is con

Measurement and structure of pathological gambling behavior.

The serious effects of pathological gambling on both gamblers and their families warrants research on the disorder. This study aimed at identifying components of pathological gambling with the goal of developing methods for early detection and preventive strategies. A factor analysis of behaviors hypothesized to relate to pathological gambling resulted in a multidimensional model of the disorder. Eight factors were identified, including distinct neurotic, psychopathic, and impulsive components, and used in a comparative analysis of 83 admitted compulsive gamblers and 61 nongamblers. Five of th

An outcome study of an inpatient treatment program for pathological gamblers.

In 1972 the Brecksville Unit of the Cleveland Veterans Administration Medical Center began the first inpatient treatment program for pathological gambling in the United States. The 30-day, highly structured gambling treatment program aims for abstinence from gambling, reduction of the urge to gamble, and restoration of a maximum level of social functioning. The authors report the results of a preliminary outcome study of 60 former patients who completed a survey form rating various aspects of their lives one year postdischarge. Fifty-five percent of the respondents reported complete abstinence

Profile of the pathological gambler.

Pathological (compulsive) gambling is a serious emotional and social problem that has existed for centuries but has only recently been recognized as a distinct diagnostic entity that can be effectively treated. The development and progression of pathological gambling are outlined. The progression of the disorder through three identifiable phases leads to predictable complications. The treatment of the gambler within the framework of Gamblers Anonymous and/or by mental health professionals is described.

Patterns of substance abuse in pathological gamblers undergoing treatment.

Increasing public exposure to gambling as a recreational option is leading to increased pathological gambling . The prevalence and correlates of substance abuse in a population of severe pathological gamblers is investigated. The results indicate a high rate of alcohol abuse and drug abuse in this population and in their biological families. The implications of these findings for clinicians working with pathological gamblers and substance abusers are discussed.

Psychological test findings on pathological gamblers in treatment.

A sample of 23 veterans entering the Pathological Gambling Treatment Program at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Miami, Florida, were administered a battery of tests including the following: Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS), Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI), Edwards Personal Preference Schedule (EPPS), and the Personal Orientation Inventory (POI). Findings on the intelligence testing indicated that on the average the pathological gamblers were of bright normal intelligence with a mean WAIS Full Scale IQ of 116.78, mean Verbal IQ of 119.30, and a mean Perf
