Similarities and Differences in Neuroimaging.

Addiction is a chronically relapsing disease characterized by drug intoxication, craving, bingeing, and withdrawal with loss of control. An expanding body of literature has suggested that non-substance addictions, such as internet addiction and pathological gambling, exhibit shared clinical, phenomenological, and biological features with substance-based addictions. With the development of imaging technology in the past three decades, neuroimaging studies have yielded critical insights into the neurobiological implications of substance and non-substance addictions, revealing neurochemical and f

Similarities and Differences in Diagnostic Scales.

The scale as a diagnostic tool plays an important role in discriminating between addicts and normal subjects. At the beginning of this chapter, we will briefly introduce the development of substance and non-substance addiction scales, which not only include alcohol addiction, nicotine addiction, cannabis addiction, pathological gambling pathological Internet use, but also exercise addiction, sex addiction, and food addiction, which are in dispute. While we will find almost all the addiction scales contain the items on social impairment, preoccupied, withdrawal, and tolerance, the variability i

Biochemical Diagnosis in Substance and Non-substance Addiction.

An optimal biochemical marker for addiction would be some easily traced molecules in body specimens, which indicate indulgent addictive behaviors or susceptibility to certain addictive stimuli. In this chapter, we discussed existing literature about possible biomarkers, and classified them into three categories: the substance molecules and their metabolites, markers from biochemical responses to certain addiction, and genetic markers suggesting susceptibility to addiction. In every category, we examined studies concerning a certain type of addiction one by one, with focus mainly on opiates, ps

Cabergoline-Induced Gambling Causing Increased Adrenal Crisis Episodes.

Dopamine agonists have been used in the treatment of acromegaly, but they are modestly effective and are rarely associated with impulse control disorders (ICDs). We present the case of a 34-year-old woman with acromegaly who underwent transsphenoidal resection for an invasive pituitary macroadenoma, followed by the development of panhypopituitarism. Postoperative imaging revealed residual tumor, and her insulin-like growth factor I levels remained elevated, indicating disease persistence. She subsequently received salvage radiosurgery and was treated with lanreotide and cabergoline, achieving

Cognitive outcomes of infusion therapies in Parkinson's disease: A comprehensive systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Device-aided therapies, such as levodopa-and apomorphine-based infusion pumps, are widely used for managing patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) with symptoms inadequately controlled by oral medications. Cognitive impairment is a critical factor in selecting an appropriate therapy; however, the effects of levodopa/carbidopa intestinal gel (LCIG) and continuous subcutaneous apomorphine infusion (CSAI) on cognitive function remain debated. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this review is twofold: i) to provide a comprehensive analysis of the short-term benefits of device-aided infusion therap

Documented End-of-Life Preferences of People With Parkinson's Disease or Parkinsonism Across Europe.

BACKGROUND: Parkinson's disease and atypical parkinsonism are characterized by motor and non-motor symptoms. As the disease advances, planning for end-of-life (EoL) care becomes increasingly important. However, consensus-based European guidelines for advance care planning and documentation of EoL care preferences for parkinsonism are lacking. Understanding current documentation practices for EoL care across Europe is an essential first step towards formulating such guidelines. OBJECTIVES: Provide an overview of the status of EoL care documentation in selected regions of Austria, Estonia, Germ

Are there gender differences in adverse drug reactions to levodopa? A real-world safety comparison in the global pharmacovigilance database.

BACKGROUND: Gender differences were reported in Parkinson's disease as well as in drug effects in general. OBJECTIVE: The study was performed to investigate putative gender differences in levodopa-related adverse drug reactions (ADRs). METHODS: Using Vigibase®, the global pharmacovigilance database, all ADRs reports with levodopa between 01/01/2000 and 31/12/2024 in adults were included. The main levodopa (motor and non-motor) ADRs were compared between women and men. Results are presented as reporting odds ratios (ROR) with their 95% confidence interval. RESULTS: Among 2887 ADRs with levod

Impulse control disorders and dopamine receptor agonism in Parkinson's disease patients: Clinical implications.

The association between impulse control disorders (ICDs) and dopamine agonist (DA) treatment in Parkinson's disease (PD) has been well known and extensively researched since the early 2000s. The most common behaviors included in ICDs are compulsive shopping, pathological gambling and hypersexuality which confer substantial burdens to patients and families. DAs show a more stable effect on motor control and confer lower risk of dyskinesia than levodopa, however due to the burden of ICDs, DAs in PD treatment are approached with increasing caution. Mechanisms and risk factors for ICD development

Addiction and chronic skin diseases: A Pan-European study on prevalence, associations and patient impact.

BACKGROUND: Chronic skin diseases such as psoriasis (PSO), atopic dermatitis (AD) and hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) are frequently associated with psychological distress, potentially promoting maladaptive coping mechanisms including addictive behaviours. Despite evidence of higher addiction rates among dermatology patients, comprehensive multicenter data across Europe are lacking. OBJECTIVES: To estimate the prevalence and patterns of addictive behaviours among patients with chronic skin diseases in European tertiary dermatology centres and explore associated sociodemographic and clinical fac

The impact of impulsivity and social anxiety on pathological gambling and technology addiction: A cross-sectional study.

OBJECTIVE: With the introduction of the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders and changing life conditions, behavioral addictions have gained more prominence in academia. Behavioral addictions exhibit common and unique features, both in comparison to non-behavioral addictions and among different types of behavioral addictions. Pathological gambling or gambling disorder is included in the DSM-5 and can be considered the prototype of behavioral addiction. Therefore, in this study we aim to highlight the similarities and differences between pathological gambli

Sex-biased regulatory changes in the placenta of native highlanders contribute to adaptive fetal development.

Compared with lowlander migrants, native Tibetans have a higher reproductive success at high altitude though the underlying mechanism remains unclear. Here, we compared the transcriptome and histology of full-term placentas between native Tibetans and Han migrants. We found that the placental trophoblast shows the largest expression divergence between Tibetans and Han, and Tibetans show decreased immune response and endoplasmic reticulum stress. Remarkably, we detected a sex-biased expression divergence, where the male-infant placentas show a greater between-population difference than the fema

Spanish validation of the Gamblers' Belief Questionnaire (GBQ).

The objective of this study is to validate The Gambler's Beliefs Questionnaire, a measure of gamblers' cognitive distortions. The psychometric properties of the scale were analyzed with a Spanish sample of 515 participants aged from 16 and 24 years. Three scales related to pathological gambling (SOGS-RA and MAGS) and to social desirability were administered. A cross-sectional validation was performed, obtaining a scale with 21 items distributed in two independent factors (Luck/perseverance and Illusion of control). The internal consistency (α = .93) and test-retest reliability (r = .69) are ad

Stratifying quality of life outcome in subthalamic stimulation for Parkinson's disease.

BACKGROUND: Subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation (STN-DBS) for Parkinson's disease (PD) improves quality of life (QoL), motor and non-motor symptoms (NMS). However, in previous studies, 43%-49% of patients did not experience clinically relevant postoperative QoL improvement. To inform individualised prediction of postoperative QoL improvement, we developed a stratification analysis of QoL outcomes based on preoperative non-motor total burden, severity of motor progression and motor response in levodopa challenge tests. METHODS: This was a prospective, open-label, multicentre, internatio

Pramipexole restores behavioral inhibition in highly impulsive rats through a paradoxical modulation of frontostriatal networks.

Impulse control disorders (ICDs), a wide spectrum of maladaptive behaviors which includes pathological gambling, hypersexuality and compulsive buying, have been recently suggested to be triggered or aggravated by treatments with dopamine D2/3 receptor agonists, such as pramipexole (PPX). Despite evidence showing that impulsivity is associated with functional alterations in corticostriatal networks, the neural basis of the exacerbation of impulsivity by PPX has not been elucidated. Here we used a hotspot analysis to assess the functional recruitment of several corticostriatal structures by PPX

Impulse Control Disorders in Parkinson's Disease and Atypical Parkinsonian Syndromes-Is There a Difference?

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Impulse control disorders (ICDs) are characterized by potentially harmful actions resulting from disturbances in the self-control of emotions and behavior. ICDs include disorders such as gambling, hypersexuality, binge eating, and compulsive buying. ICDs are known non-motor symptoms in Parkinson's disease (PD) and are associated primarily with the use of dopaminergic treatment (DRT) and especially dopamine agonists (DA). However, in atypical parkinsonism (APS), such as progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) or multiple system atrophy (MSA), there are only single case r

Using the Synthetic Control Method to Evaluate the Impact of a Land-Based Gambling Ban on Crime.

We use the synthetic control method to examine whether land-based gambling ban has an effect on crime in a given city. In a sample of four Czech cities where the ban was introduced, we show that these cities had roughly the same crime rate development in the years after the ban as the control cities without the ban, showing that there is no significant impact. As this is, to our knowledge, the first use of the synthetic control method in the context of gambling, the main contribution of this study lies in demonstrating the possibilities in its use. Employing this versatile method may improve t
