A Systematic Review on Intervention Treatment in Pathological Gambling.

Over the last century, there has been a growing interest in researching pathological gambling, particularly in industrialized nations. Historically, gambling was widely perceived as morally questionable, condemned by religious groups. However, contemporary concerns have shifted towards the health repercussions of gambling disorders and broader societal impacts like increased crime and money laundering. Governments, aiming to mitigate social harm, often regulate or directly oversee gambling activities. The global surge in legal gambling has resulted in a substantial rise in its prevalence, popu

Predictors of pathological gambling behaviours in parents population in Nigeria.

The increasing incidence of psychological pains, burnout, and anxiety among gamblers in Nigeria is high. This is because pathological gambling (PG) is on the rise and it is linked to many social vices such as stealing, drug abuse, and sexual abuse. It is important to investigate the trajectories of PG in Nigeria. A cross-sectional survey design was employed in our study with 197 participants sampled from 28 gambling venues in Nigeria made up the study's sample size. Of the 197, 131 (66.5%) were males and 66 (33.5%) were females. 50 (25.4%) were within the age range of 20-30 years, 42 (21.3%) w

No evidence for an association of voxel-based morphometry with short-term non-motor outcomes in deep brain stimulation for Parkinson's disease.

Deep brain stimulation of the subthalamic nucleus (STN-DBS) is an established therapy in advanced Parkinson's disease (PD). Motor and non-motor outcomes, however, show considerable inter-individual variability. Preoperative morphometry-based metrics have recently received increasing attention to explain treatment effects. As evidence for the prediction of non-motor outcomes is limited, we sought to investigate the association between metrics of voxel-based morphometry and short-term non-motor outcomes following STN-DBS in this prospective open-label study. Forty-nine PD patients underwent stru

Trait Impulsivity as a Feature of Parkinson's Disease Treatment and Progression.

Heightened trait impulsivity in both subclinical and pathological senses is becoming increasingly recognised in Parkinson's disease (PD). Impulsive behaviours and impulse control disorders (ICDs) are a consequence of perturbation to the rewards pathway leading individuals to conduct activities in a repetitive, excessive, and maladaptive fashion. Commonly linked to PD, heightened trait impulsivity has been found to primarily manifest in the forms of hypersexuality, pathological gambling, compulsive shopping, and binge eating, all of which may significantly impact social and financial standing.

Examining the Role of Sports Betting Marketing in Youth Problem Gambling.

BACKGROUND: Sports betting is becoming increasingly common among young people in the UK and Australia. There is a need to understand how the marketing of sports betting may influence risky and pathological gambling to inform policies aimed at reducing harm. This study examines whether sports betting advertising may predict problem gambling scores among young people, while accounting for non-marketing variables. METHODS: We recruited 567 participants (53.1% male) aged 18-24 years from an online research panel. Participants were eligible if they had an active betting account and regularly bet o

Response to letter to the editor regarding "Does the 5-2-1 criteria identify patients with advanced Parkinson's disease? Real-world screening accuracy and burden of 5-2-1-positive patients in 7 countries".

The 5-2-1 criteria was developed to facilitate the identification and referral of patients with Parkinson's Disease (PD) inadequately controlled by oral medications. The criterion was not developed to screen patients with PD for device-aided therapy eligibility. The robust design and validation of the 5-2-1 criteria minimizes over or inappropriate referrals, and supports physicians in the timely identification of patients with PD who may warrant further evaluation for treatment optimization. This response letter clarifies concerns raised by Moes et al.

Opicapone for the treatment of early wearing-off in levodopa-treated Parkinson's disease: pooled analysis of patient level data from two randomized open-label studies.

BACKGROUND: The wearing-off phenomenon is a key driver of medication change for patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) treated with levodopa. Common first-line options include increasing the levodopa dose or adding a catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) inhibitor, but there are no trials comparing the efficacy of these approaches. We evaluated the effectiveness of adjunct opicapone versus an additional 100 mg levodopa dose in PD patients with early wearing-off using pooled data from 2 randomized studies. METHODS: The ADOPTION study program included two similarly designed 4-week, open-label stu

Pramipexole Hyperactivates the External Globus Pallidus and Impairs Decision-Making in a Mouse Model of Parkinson's Disease.

In patients with Parkinson's disease (PD), dopamine replacement therapy with dopamine D2/D3 receptor agonists induces impairments in decision-making, including pathological gambling. The neurobiological mechanisms underlying these adverse effects remain elusive. Here, in a mouse model of PD, we investigated the effects of the dopamine D3 receptor (D3R)-preferring agonist pramipexole (PPX) on decision-making. PD model mice were generated using a bilateral injection of the toxin 6-hydroxydopamine into the dorsolateral striatum. Subsequent treatment with PPX increased disadvantageous choices char

The influence of age on gambling problems worldwide: A systematic review and meta-analysis of risk among younger, middle-aged, and older adults.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Problem gambling (PG) represents a significant public health concern with widespread effects in various cultures and regions globally, with younger individuals and males at a particularly higher risk. This disparity is attributed to a mix of cultural, developmental, and biological influences. To date, there has not been a comprehensive examination to determine whether this risk pattern holds consistently across different jurisdictions. METHODS: We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis using the PRISMA framework, identifying 21 eligible studies from 18 countries,

Gender Differences in Gambling Disorder: Results from an Italian Multicentric Study.

OBJECTIVE: Although gender-specific evidence on Gambling Disorder (GD) is still limited, some studies reported specific differences, mainly in psychopathological profiles, gambling behavior patterns, and pathogenesis. In order to further examine the role of gender in GD, we conducted a multicenter investigation in a sample of Italian outpatients. METHOD: One hundred-four outpatients with a diagnosis of GD based on DSM-5 criteria were consecutively recruited at two clinics based in Milan. Socio-demographic and clinical variables were collected for the whole sample and analyzed for the effect o

The Interplay of Pathological Gambling, Substance Abuse, and Financial Ruin: A Case Report.

Gambling, which was previously restricted to physical casinos and card rooms, has become readily accessible through internet platforms and virtual card games as a result of recently developed technological advances. The increase in the prevalence of pathological gambling (PG) disorder has been attributed to the extensive availability of online gambling platforms and the covert advertising that is associated with them. In this case, we examine an individual with a PG disorder who is intrigued by online gambling. This individual also has a co-occurring drug use disorder and is burdened by signif

Gambling-related attitudes and dimensional structure of the GABS-15 in outpatient addiction care patients: associations with gambling disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Individuals with gambling disorder (GD) harbor cognitive distortions and dysfunctional beliefs about gambling that may foster problematic gambling behaviour. Evidence on particularly detrimental attitudes and beliefs is however lacking. To close this knowledge gap, we analysed associations between gambling attitudes and beliefs (Gambling Attitudes and Beliefs Survey (GABS-15)) and severity of gambling disorder (DSM-5 criteria met) in a German cohort of 123 individuals receiving outpatient gambling treatment. METHODS: Data from the "Katamnese-Study" covering a 36-months timeframe

Defining treatment response in gambling disorder.

BACKGROUND: Gambling disorder is a common mental health condition, and a growing cause of concern globally. Despite the availability of well-validated self-report and clinical instruments to measure symptom severity, there has been no study to establish optimal thresholds for determining treatment response based on these measures. METHODS: Data from 553 participants (aged 18-65 years) who had participated in previous pharmacological and psychotherapeutic clinical trials for gambling disorder were aggregated. Studies were included that collected Clinical Global Impression Improvement (CGI-I) a

Inhibition of Indirect Pathway Activity Causes Abnormal Decision-Making In a Mouse Model of Impulse Control Disorder in Parkinson's Disease.

Healthy action selection relies on the coordinated activity of striatal direct and indirect pathway neurons. In Parkinson's disease (PD), in which loss of midbrain dopamine neurons is associated with progressive motor and cognitive deficits, this coordination is disrupted. Dopamine replacement therapy can remediate motor symptoms, but can also cause impulse control disorder (ICD), which is characterized by pathological gambling, hypersexuality, and/or compulsive shopping. The cellular and circuit mechanisms of ICD remain unknown. Here we developed a mouse model of PD/ICD, in which ICD-like beh
