Psychological interventions for harmful gambling: Systematic review and network meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Gambling causes harms for the individual, their families and wider society. Psychological interventions have been shown to improve gambling severity, but their relative effectiveness is not well understood. METHODS: Systematic review and network meta-analysis (NMA) of psychological interventions for harmful gambling. Outcomes were gambling symptom severity and gambling frequency (expressed as standardized mean differences [SMDs]). RESULTS: We included 52 randomized controlled trials (RCTs), 9013 participants and 14 intervention classes. For gambling symptom severity, gro

Gambling Severity and the Use of General Health Care and Social Services: A Nationwide Population Survey of Service Use and Associated Factors.

UNLABELLED: <p>Introduction: Gambling-related harms constitute a significant public health concern, with adverse effects ranging from financial difficulties to mental health disorders. Therefore, people experiencing gambling-related harm may need different kinds of health care and social services. METHODS: This study examines the social and health care usage between gambling severity groups. We aim to examine whether people with recreational, risk, or problem gambling use more social and health care services compared to non-gamblers, and what increases the probability of using social and heal

Drink more, bet more, spend more: Examining who engages in simultaneous drinking while sports betting and impact on betting behaviour.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: There is a shared culture between sports betting and drinking alcohol, yet there is a lack of studies investigating predictors of simultaneous alcohol use, and whether drinking carries increased risk of gambling-related harms among sports bettors. METHODS: We examined four groups of Canadian sports bettors: (1) no alcohol use (n = 70), concurrent use (n = 429), (3) sometimes-simultaneous alcohol use (n = 211), and (4) always/almost always simultaneous alcohol use (n = 198). Participants completed measures of demographic characteristics, sports gambling-related variables,

Unpacking non-transparency: Most physical trading card game and collectible sports card packs failed to disclose probabilities for winning rare prizes.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Physical card packs are gambling-like products offering consumers random prizes. Most contain cards of little value worth less than the purchase price of the pack itself, but a few contain rare and highly valuable cards. Previous research has found a weak positive association between physical card pack spending and problem gambling, suggesting that vulnerable consumers may experience financial harm and that these physical gambling-like products may pose addiction-like risks. Unlike traditional gambling, card packs are not an adult-only product and are widely purchased by c

Disparities in Reporting of Violent Events by Patients at a US Children's Hospital.

BACKGROUND: Violence toward health care workers is increasing, yet patient risk factors for having a reported violent event (VE) are unknown. Understanding patient risk factors associated with reported VEs is needed to inform equitable approaches to VE reporting and guide resource delivery. OBJECTIVE: To identify patient and hospitalization characteristics associated with reported VEs at a US children's hospital. METHODS: This case-control retrospective study included children aged 5 to 18 that were hospitalized between January 1, 2019 and December 31, 2023 at a 390-bed children's hospital.

Suicide Attempt History in Veterans Receiving Treatment for Gambling Disorder: Demographic and Psychiatric Associates.

INTRODUCTION: Veterans are at an elevated risk for suicide, with notably high suicide rates over recent years. Additionally, veterans are also at elevated risk for a variety of psychiatric and mental health comorbidities, one of them being gambling disorder (GD). However, limited research has examined the relationship between GD and suicidality among veteran populations. The present study links suicidality with GD including comorbid diagnoses, gambling preferences, gambling severity, and impulsivity in a sample of military veterans with GD. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study was an archival an

Predicting first onset of suicide attempt among children with suicidal ideation or non-suicidal self-injury using machine learning: a prospective population-based cohort study.

While children with suicidal ideation or non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) are at high risk of suicide, most do not attempt suicide. This study aims to identify predictors of first suicide attempts among children with suicidal thoughts or NSSI. We utilized longitudinal data from the Adolescent Brain and Cognitive Development study to examine a broad range of risk factors in children reporting suicidal ideation (N = 344, mean age = 9.93) or NSSI (N = 261, mean age = 9.88) at baseline, predicting first attempt of suicide during a 4-year follow-up. Predictive models were developed through bivariate

Impulse Dyscontrol Symptoms Are Related to Amyloid Beta in Patients With Subjective Cognitive Decline and Mild Cognitive Impairment.

INTRODUCTION: The relationship between neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPSs) and Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathophysiology, considering cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) biomarkers, is still not clarified and the available results in the literature are contradictory especially when it comes to the prodromic stages of AD. Clarifying the role of the AD biomarkers in the development of NPS in subjective cognitive decline (SCD) and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is relevant and can be useful for planning longitudinal interventions in the AD continuum. The present work studies the correlation between NPSs and A

Health risk behaviours, obesity, and gambling severity: findings from a nationwide population study.

Prior research on the relationship between health risk behaviours (HRBs), obesity, and gambling has primarily focused on problem gambling, while studies focusing on lower severity levels are scarce. Moreover, this relationship has rarely been analysed separately for women and men. This study aimed to investigate the association between HRBs, obesity, and the full spectrum of gambling severity in women and men. Cross-sectional population-based data from Healthy Finland Survey 2022-23 was exploited, including adults aged 20+ years (n = 28 154, response rate 46%, mean age 52 years). The Problem G

XBP1 gene silencing augments quercetin-induced apoptosis and anti-metastatic activity in breast cancer cell lines.

BACKGROUND: Leishmaniasis is caused by the parasite Leishmania donovani and transmitted by the bite of the sand fly vector Phlebotomus. This disease is endemic in the Bihar region of India. There are three common forms of the disease - cutaneous, mucosal and visceral leishmaniasis. The most common presentation of this disease is prolonged unexplained fever with hepatosplenomegaly. CASE DESCRIPTION: We report an unusual case of pyrexia of unknown origin (PUO) in a patient who was extensively worked up for PUO. She was found to have low CD4 counts even though serial samples were negative for HI

The role of emotion in economic decision making: behavioral and neurophysiological evidence from the Wheel of Fortune Gambling Task.

Decision making is frequently influenced by factors such as an individual's emotional state, cognitive biases, social influences, and environmental constraints. Understanding how these factors influence the way decisions are made is essential for optimizing and improving this cognitive process. Therefore, this review examines the theoretical basis of emotion-influenced decision making. Here, we integrate insights from eye-tracking, electroencephalography (EEG), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) evidence, as well as behavioral findings. We specifically review evidence from studies applying t

When rejection backfires: Social exclusion and economic decision-making in gamblers.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Economic decision-making deviates from rational choice models and is influenced by social factors, particularly fairness considerations and belonging needs. Social exclusion and altruistic punishment are intended to promote behavioral conformity, yet paradoxically may exacerbate rather than correct targeted behaviors among individuals with addictions already experiencing chronic rejection. Several preliminary studies show that social exclusion increases money desirability in general populations, however, the interaction between acute social exclusion and economic decision-

Dark patterns in online gambling: A scoping review and classification of deceptive design practices.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Dark patterns are online platform design features that influence consumer behaviour to the advantage of the interface designer. In online gambling, such designs may exacerbate gambling-related harms, particularly among vulnerable consumers. This study aims to provide the first scoping review of dark patterns in online gambling. METHODS: Following established scoping review frameworks, we systematically searched databases and grey literature using terms related to dark patterns and online gambling. The review protocol was preregistered. RESULTS: Included articles (n = 16)

Default mode network activity is related to efficiency in a combined motion error and gambling task.

Decision-making under risk lies at the core of strategic action in human activities. Nevertheless, the neural mechanisms underlying decision-making in trial-and-error-based learning in the absence of explicit risk ratios have not been thoroughly understood. This study investigates the neural correlates of long-term success during repeated risky decision-making. We combined a motion detection task with a higher-level risk task in a functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) paradigm. Twenty-five healthy adults participated in an fMRI task that required stopping a ball covertly moving at a con

When effort fuels risk: Cognitive exertion increases risk-taking for gains but reduces it for losses.

Exerting effort can lead people to engage in risk-taking behaviors. However, this risk-taking after-effect of effort expenditure is primarily observed in scenarios involving gains. It remains unclear how this after-effect is influenced by contextual valence (gain vs. loss contexts). This study addressed this issue in three experiments. Participants performed either a low or high cognitive demanding task during the effort-expenditure phase and then played a risky gambling task during the decision-making phase to obtain gains (Experiment 1), avoid losses (Experiment 2), and obtain gains while av

Non-Invasive Brain Stimulation of the Ventromedial Prefrontal Cortex Improves Behavioral Inhibition by Enhancing the Processing Depth and Anticipation of Outcomes in a Gambling Task.

Disordered gambling and other behavioral addictions are characterized by a lack of behavioral inhibition, such that patients repeatedly make disadvantageous decisions and fail to disengage from maladaptive behavior. Previous research has shown that behavioral addictions are associated with altered ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC) activity, making it an interesting target for neuromodulation. Using a gambling paradigm containing positive and negative expected value trials, we investigated decision-making and feedback processing while stimulating the vmPFC via transcranial direct current s

Synthesising the available evidence to identify the health impact of gambling harm and gambling problems.

Gambling-related harm (GRH) significantly impacts health-related quality of life (HRQoL), though its measurement remains challenging due to varied methodologies. This study synthesises existing research on HRQoL effects of gambling, highlighting the complementary strengths of direct and indirect elicitation methods. We reviewed studies measuring GRH's impact on HRQoL, focusing on the maximum effect of severe problems and the shape of the impact curve across the harm spectrum. Results revealed consistent maximum HRQoL disutility of approximately 0.45 for severe gambling problems in direct elici

Financial Literacy, Locus of Control, and Gambling Behavior in Australia.

This study examines whether financial literacy is associated with reduced gambling risk using a large representative sample of the Australian population in the Household, Income and Labor Dynamics in Australia (HILDA) survey. We analyzed four waves of biennial data from 2016 to 2022 that contain financial literacy and gambling modules, covering 13,358 respondents aged 15 and above, corresponding to 21,140 person-year observations. We found that higher financial literacy was associated with lower gambling risk measured by the Problem Gambling Severity Index (PGSI). Instrumental variable regress

Physiological Evidence Supporting the Emotional Motivation Account of the Ending Effect: Pupil Diameters Increase Toward the End.

The phenomenon of increased risk-taking in the last round of a set of risky decision-making tasks is called the ending effect. Recent empirical studies proposed an emotional motivation account to explain the ending effect. That is, the pursuit of an emotionally satisfying ending leads to the increase of risk-taking. However, previous studies have mostly examined the ending effect at the behavioral level, there is yet no physiological evidence to examine the emotional motivation account. To fill in this gap of knowledge, the current study examined the emotional motivation account at the physiol
