INTRODUCTION: Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is an autosomal dominant neurocutaneous disorder associated with substantial psychiatric comorbidity. Although repetitive and compulsive behaviors are reported in NF1, the risk of body-focused repetitive behaviors is understudied.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective cohort study using the TriNetX research network (2006-2026). On January 14, 2026, individuals with a first recorded diagnosis of NF1 were compared with matched controls. Patients with prior trichotillomania or skin-picking disorder were excluded. Cohorts were balanced using 1:1 propen

Trichotillomania and excoriation disorder are obsessive-compulsive related disorders that are often subclassified together as body-focused repetitive behavior (BFRB) disorders. While previous research suggests shared genetic factors, the genetic architecture of these BFRBs remains incompletely understood. Probands with trichotillomania and/or excoriation disorder and both of their biological parents were recruited for an ongoing genetic study of parent-offspring trios with BFRBs. Genome-wide array data were generated in 110 families (334 individuals total) to investigate the role of both commo

Primate social hair plucking (SHP) has been posited to be prosocial or agonistic, though the health-associated concerns of SHP are less frequently explored. We studied SHP in seven mixed-sex groups of captive rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta), at the National Biomedical Research Institute. We examined whether individual rates of SHP were associated with grooming, aggression, and socio-demographic characteristics. We also examined whether SHP rates were associated with alopecia, body condition, and hair cortisol concentrations. Rates of SHP production and reception were similar to grooming and a

BACKGROUND: This study examines sexual functioning in adults with trichotillomania and skin picking disorder. To our knowledge, no study has examined sexual functioning in either of these disorders.
METHODS: 334 adults (mean age=30.21, SD = 8.23, 83.5% cisgender women, 67.6% sexually active with another person in the past month) were recruited from online Reddit communities. Participants completed surveys assessing demographics, sexual functioning, and current and lifetime pulling and picking severity. Comorbidities and treatment history were assessed via dichotomous variables. Sexual functio

BACKGROUND: Trichobezoars are masses composed of ingested hair, typically affecting children and adolescents with trichotillomania and trichophagia. Their nonspecific presentation often delays diagnosis and may result in complications such as malnutrition or gastric perforation. This study describes our experience in managing pediatric trichobezoars at a tertiary pediatric center in Europe.
METHODS: Retrospective single-center case series of gastric trichobezoar cases in children treated at a tertiary pediatric hospital in Brussels, Belgium, between 2020 and 2025. Data extracted from electron

BACKGROUND: Despite the high prevalence of body-focused repetitive behaviors (BFRBs; e.g., skin picking, trichotillomania, nail biting, cavitadaxia/lip-cheek biting), many affected individuals neither seek nor receive adequate treatment. This study investigates treatment-seeking behaviors and experience with self-help strategies as well as professional interventions among individuals with BFRBs.
METHODS: A total of 971 participants with BFRBs were recruited via online platforms and self-help organizations. Participants completed the Generic Body-Focused Repetitive Behavior Scale (GBS-8) and a

INTRODUCTION: Body-focused repetitive behaviors (BFRBs), including skin picking, onychophagia, onychotillomania, and trichotillomania, are psychodermatologic conditions characterized by repetitive self-injury. While neuropsychiatric comorbidities are common in neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1), prevalence and quality-of-life (QoL) impact of BFRBs in these individuals are underexplored. We aimed to characterize BFRB prevalence and assess association with dermatology-related QoL in a national NF1 cohort.
METHODS: A voluntary online survey was distributed to NF1 registry members. Participants repor

BACKGROUND: Childhood maltreatment (CM) is a well-known risk factor for a wide range of adult mental disorders. However, little is known about the role of CM in trichotillomania (TTM) and skin-picking disorder (SPD). The current study therefore aimed to explore the relationship between CM and symptom severity in patients with TTM and SPD, as well as to compare their baseline CM levels with those of patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD) and a healthy control group.
METHODS: The Childhood Trauma Questionnaire-Short Form (CTQ-SF), along with validated measures of disorder-specific

Trichotillomania (TTM) has shown high rates of comorbidity with ADHD. While both disorders have been associated with some performance deficits on measures of motor response inhibition, findings on deficits in TTM have been mixed. Deficits previously found in TTM may be in part a reflection of the presence of comorbid ADHD in the TTM subsamples. We compared adults with self-reported TTM alone (n = 59) and those with self-reported TTM and ADHD (n = 61) to a healthy control group (n = 59) on two response inhibition measures, the Go/No-Go task and the Stop Signal Task. We hypothesized that those w

BACKGROUND: Many individuals with trichotillomania find themselves unable to access effective treatment and are forced to manage symptoms independently. Support groups play an important role in symptom management.
AIMS: This qualitative study aimed to explore experiences with online support groups among hair-pulling individuals (N = 20; 10 women, 7 men, 3 non-binary).
METHODS: Data were collected online via semi-structured interviews. Reflexive thematic analysis yielded four themes: (1) group usage, (2) detrimental group effects, (3) group benefits, and (4) attitudes towards groups.

BACKGROUND: Trichotillomania is predominantly managed via serotonergic pharmacotherapy and behavioral interventions. However, options become scarce when patients exhibit extreme intolerance to first-line agents. Bupropion, a norepinephrine-dopamine reuptake inhibitor (NDRI), has been reported in a limited number of cases as a potential treatment option for hair-pulling disorders but remains infrequently used in clinical practice.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 25-year-old female medical student with a 13-year history of severe, stress-triggered Trichotillomania developed debilitating hypersomnia (16-18

Trichotillomania (TTM) is a body-focused repetitive behavior that may function as an affect regulation strategy. In bipolar-spectrum youth, persistent emotion regulation difficulties may be particularly relevant for early recognition and intervention. In a cross-sectional design, euthymic adolescents with bipolar disorder and a documented lifetime history of TTM (BD+TTM) were compared with euthymic adolescents with bipolar disorder and no lifetime TTM (BD-only) and age- and sex-matched healthy controls (40 participants per group). None of the BD+TTM participants had active hair-pulling at asse

Trichotillomania (TTM) and excoriation disorder (ED) are body-focused repetitive behaviors (BFRBs) characterized by recurrent hair-pulling or skin-picking; they may present with psychiatric comorbidities worsening outcomes. While cross-sectional and case-control studies report high comorbidity rates, longitudinal analyses remain limited. We looked to determine incidence of new psychiatric diagnoses, psychopharmacologic prescriptions, and psychotherapy referrals following BFRB diagnosis compared with controls and assess whether psychiatric history modified outcomes. Adults with ICD-10 diagnoses

Trichotillomania is a disorder affecting 1-2% of the population during their lifetime and is characterised by recurrent hair-pulling that often leads to distress, low self-esteem, social ostracism, and lowered relationship satisfaction. Despite the availability of effective therapies, individuals with trichotillomania frequently report dissatisfaction with clinical care. This qualitative study explored the experiences of 20 adults with trichotillomania, focusing on their interactions with mental health practitioners. Using reflexive thematic analysis of semi-structured interviews, we construct

Background: Trichotillomania (hair pulling disorder) and skin picking disorder often begin around puberty, suggesting the potential role of hormones in the etiology and maintenance of these conditions. However, little research has explored whether usage of hormonal medications, including birth control, affects symptoms in people with these disorders. Methods: Two hundred and ten women with self-reported trichotillomania and/or skin picking disorder were recruited from the community if they had previously taken a hormonal medication in their lifetime. Data were collected on the perceived relati

Gastroduodenal bezoars are masses of indigestible material that accumulate within the stomach and may lead to obstruction. We present a young female who presented with abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting, and was found to have a large gastric bezoar extending into the duodenum, resulting in gastroduodenal intussusception. Endoscopic removal was unsuccessful due to the size of the mass, which consisted predominantly of hair. The patient underwent surgical removal, with resolution of symptoms and uneventful recovery. This case highlights an uncommon cause of gastroduodenal intussusception and e

Rapunzel syndrome, a rare type of trichobezoar where a hairball in the stomach extends into the small intestine through the pylorus. Intussusception associated with Rapunzel syndrome is particularly rare, with fewer than 10 reported cases worldwide. This report presents a 20-year-old woman with jejunojejunal intussusception caused by Rapunzel syndrome. She had 3 months of upper abdominal pain, vomiting, early fullness, weakness, and noticeable abdominal mass. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography scan revealed a trichobezoar with jejunal extension, causing transient jejunojejunal intussuscepti
