Risk factors for barbering in laboratory mice.

Barbering is a common abnormal behavior in laboratory mice, where mice pluck their own fur and/or the fur or whiskers of their cage mates. Barbering mice are a concern for welfare and research quality, as well as serving as a spontaneous model of trichotillomania (a hair-pulling disorder in humans). Causes and prevention of barbering are poorly understood, although there is evidence that both biological and environmental factors play a role in its prevalence. Since initial work in this area was done 20 years ago, mouse husbandry has changed dramatically. We provide an updated analysis of risk

Exploring the Relationship Between Psychiatric Illness and Dermatological Disorders: A Narrative Review.

The interplay between psychiatric conditions and dermatological disorders is complex and multifaceted, often resulting in significant challenges for both diagnosis and treatment. This narrative review examines associations between specific psychiatric conditions, trichotillomania, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and various dermatological disorders. The present investigation delves into pathophysiological mechanisms, clinical presentations, and management strategies of these comorbid conditions. Psychiatric disorders can exacerbate dermatological cond

Narrative Review of Internet-Based Self-Help Tools for Body-Focused Repetitive Behaviors: Recommendations for Clinical Practice.

INTRODUCTION: Body-focused repetitive behaviors (BFRBs), such as skin-picking, hair-pulling, and nail-biting, impair quality of life (QOL). While habit reversal training (HRT) is effective, access is often limited. Internet-based self-help interventions offer an alternative, improving accessibility for patients unable to attend in-person therapy. METHODS: We reviewed randomized controlled trials analyzing self-help or internet-based interventions for BFRBs in adults. PubMed searches yielded 1033 studies, 12 of which met the inclusion criteria, focusing on self-guided interventions for various

Gastric Trichobezoar: An Unusual Cause of Anemia.

Trichobezoar is a rare disorder that causes swallowed hair to accumulate in the gastrointestinal tract. It can lead to various gastrointestinal and systemic complications. We report the case of a 16-year-old girl who presented with pallor, chronic lethargy, and unintended weight loss. Initial assessment revealed severe microcytic anemia unresponsive to conventional iron supplementation. A giant trichobezoar was found to be filling the stomach after additional imaging investigation. Previously undetected trichotillomania and trichophagia were present in the patient's history. After the trichobe

Sociodemographic and clinical characteristics of 1,234 individuals diagnosed with trichotillomania in the Swedish National Patient Register.

Trichotillomania is an understudied, underrecognized, and difficult-to-treat psychiatric disorder that affects about 1-2% of the population, predominantly women. This study aimed to characterize the sociodemographic and clinical characteristics of a Swedish cohort of individuals with a diagnosis of trichotillomania assigned in specialist services across the country. Through the Swedish National Patient Register, we identified all individuals with an ICD-10 diagnosis of trichotillomania between January 1st, 1997 and December 31st, 2020. The cohort included 1,234 individuals, with a median age a

Neuroglia in Tourette syndrome and obsessive-compulsive disorder.

In recent years, neuroglia have drawn the attention of researchers in the fields of neurology and psychiatry. Besides their well-known functions providing support to neurons, myelinating axons, and clearing up debris, a constantly growing of evidence indicates that glial cells are key contributors to the pathophysiology of neuropsychiatric disorders. Alterations in microglia, astrocytes, and oligodendrocytes have been described in Tourette syndrome (TS) and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). The sudden onset of tics and OCD-like symptoms after infection in children (Pediatric Autoimmune Neur

Case Report on Rapunzel syndrome: a large gastric trichobezoar extending to the proximal jejunum in a young adult female.

A trichobezoar is an intraluminal mass of hair growing continuously with additional ingestion, while Rapunzel syndrome refers to a giant gastric trichobezoar that extends from the stomach into the small intestine. We present a case of Rapunzel syndrome as an uncommon cause of upper gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms in a young adult woman who denied trichotillomania and trichophagia. Preoperative radiological assessment was pivotal in planning a preferable therapeutic approach. The patient underwent laparotomy and prepyloric gastrotomy, resulting in satisfactory postoperative outcomes. Trichobezoa

Dissemination Trial of Provider Training of ACT-Enhanced Behavior Therapy for Trichotillomania: A Waitlist Controlled Study.

Trichotillomania is a psychiatric disorder characterized by recurrent hair-pulling, leading to distress and impairment. Despite the efficacy of habit reversal training (HRT) and ACT-enhanced behavior therapy (A-EBT), there is a significant knowledge gap among providers about evidence-based treatments. This study aimed to bridge this gap by evaluating the feasibility, acceptability, and effects of internet-delivered therapist training in A-EBT for trichotillomania. A randomized waitlist-controlled implementation trial was conducted with 119 licensed mental health providers assigned to either im

Systematic Review of Psychodermatologic Assessment Tools: Diagnostic Accuracy and Clinical Utility.

Primary psychodermatologic disorders such as body dysmorphic disorder, trichotillomania, and excoriation disorder present significant challenges in dermatological and psychiatric assessment due to their complex psychological and dermatological symptoms. Reliable and valid screening tools are essential for effective diagnosis and management, yet there is a lack of consensus on the most appropriate instruments. A systematic review was conducted, identifying 81 studies that employed 45 different psychodermatologic tools, of which 13 studies provided empirical data on their diagnostic accuracy. To

N-Acetylcysteine (NAC) for Trichotillomania and Excoriation Disorder: An Overview.

Trichotillomania and excoriation/skin-picking disorder involve repetitive behaviors, such as hair pulling leading to hair loss or skin picking leading to skin lesions, that cause physical complications, significant mental distress, and functional impairment despite attempts to stop. Currently, no first-line pharmacological treatments are approved for these disorders, although glutamatergic agents, select antidepressants, and other medications have demonstrated some benefit. The therapeutic potential of N-acetylcysteine (NAC) is promising. NAC helps maintain glutamate homeostasis in the brain,

A qualitative study exploring the role of perfectionism in trichotillomania.

OBJECTIVE: Trichotillomania (TTM) is a condition in which individuals repeatedly pull out their hair despite adverse consequences. Several models have suggested underlying processes, with a central feature of hairpulling being an external means to regulate internal states. The frustrated action model suggests that certain affective states arise from perfectionistic beliefs and an overactive, overprepared style of planning, triggering episodes of hairpulling. To date, there is limited research investigating perfectionism in people with TTM. The current study investigated the experiences of hair

Medicinal cannabis in the management of anxiety disorders: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: With rising anxiety disorder diagnoses, many individuals are seeking alternatives to standard pharmacotherapies, like medicinal cannabis. This systematic review focuses exclusively on anxiety-related disorders and examines a wide range of cannabis-based preparations and interventions. METHOD: We searched MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, and PsycInfo (October-December 2023) for peer-reviewed empirical studies, excluding case series, case studies, and review papers. Inclusion criteria were studies on adults (18+ years) diagnosed with anxiety-related disorders, examining the efficacy or effe

Rates and Clinical Correlates of Cannabis Use in Trichotillomania and Skin Picking Disorder.

Despite rising rates of cannabis use across the United States, and in psychiatric populations especially, relatively limited attention has been paid to rates of cannabis use in individuals with body focused repetitive behaviors (BFRBs) such as trichotillomania and skin picking disorder. Using data from an online survey, we collected rates of past-year cannabis use among individuals with BFRBs and investigated whether cannabis use is associated with the clinical presentation of trichotillomania and/or skin picking disorder. We found that approximately 33% of individuals reported past-year canna

Investigating the familiality of trichotillomania and excoriation disorder.

Trichotillomania (TTM) and excoriation disorder (ED) run in families and are thought to have shared etiological underpinnings. Only a few small studies have compared the family history of individuals with TTM, ED, and both conditions. To better understand shared predispositions, we examined self-reported family history of mental health disorders using cross-sectional survey responses from a genetics study of probands ages 4-66 years with TTM only (n = 69), ED only (n = 34), and both conditions (n = 70). Individuals with TTM only reported higher rates of having a first-degree relative with TTM

Representations of Alopecia in Children's Literature.

Alopecia impacts children's self-esteem and emotional well-being, and early exposure to literature on health conditions can foster awareness and acceptance. This study evaluates the diversity, accessibility, and medical accuracy of children's books on alopecia, assessing their alignment with the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) and American Journal of Psychiatry (AJP) treatment recommendations. While these books represent various alopecia types, hair colors, and textures, they lack sufficient inclusion of healthcare providers, male protagonists, recommended treatments, and external suppor

Hair Loss in Teenagers: A Review for Primary Care Pediatricians.

Adolescence is a critical developmental period marked by physical, psychological, and social changes, and hair loss can significantly impact self-esteem. Delays in treatment are common, and they sometimes result in permanent hair loss. This article reviews the most common causes of hair loss in adolescents (eg, androgenetic alopecia, alopecia areata, telogen effluvium, traction alopecia, trichotillomania). Key diagnostic approaches include thorough history taking and scalp examination. Management strategies range from pharmacological management to lifestyle modifications and behavioral therapi

Genomic Analysis of Trichotillomania.

Trichotillomania (TTM) is a psychiatric condition in which people feel an overwhelming urge to pull out their hair, resulting in noticeable hair loss and significant distress. Twin and family studies suggest that TTM is at least partly genetic, but no genome-wide analyses have been completed. To fill the gap in this field, we have conducted a case-control study of genotype array data from 101 European ancestry TTM cases and 488 ancestry-matched unaffected controls. TTM cases were ascertained in the United States through web-based recruitment, patient support groups, and conferences organized b
