Combing into trouble: localised acquired trichorrhexis nodosa.

Trichorrhexis nodosa (TN) is a common hair shaft disorder characterised by node-like fracture points due to structural weakening. It can be congenital or acquired, with the latter often linked to physical or chemical trauma. This report presents a case of localised acquired TN in a teenage boy with asymptomatic white nodes over the parietal scalp. The condition was attributed to repetitive friction from a specific combing habit using a pocket-sized plastic-bristled comb. Trichoscopy revealed white nodules and broken shafts with a classic 'paintbrush' appearance, while light microscopy confirme

Rethinking anorexia nervosa through the lens of control, compulsion and reward: Neurobiological insights into addiction-like features via the dopaminergic, endocannabinoid, and orexinergic systems - A narrative review.

BACKGROUND: Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a severe psychiatric disorder associated with high mortality, characterized by persistent food restriction and compulsive weight-loss behaviors. Increasing evidence suggests that certain features of AN may involve addiction-like mechanisms related to reward processing, compulsivity, and habit formation. Other perspectives conceptualize AN within the compulsivity spectrum, emphasizing overlaps with obsessive-compulsive disorder and behavioral addictions. Despite these frameworks, the neurobiological basis of addiction-like features in AN remains unclear, hin

Impulsivity and Compulsivity in Obsessive-Compulsive Spectrum Disorders: Clinical Implications for Treatment Sequencing.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and related disorders comprise a heterogeneous group of neuropsychiatric conditions characterized by intrusive thoughts and repetitive behaviors. While traditionally conceptualized as disorders of compulsivity, emerging evidence supports a dimensional model in which impulsivity represents a critical and interacting construct that influences clinical presentation, comorbidity patterns, and treatment response. This interaction is increasingly understood through dysfunction within cortico-striato-thalamo-cortical circuitry and associated large-scale brain netwo

Cannabis consumption and problematic internet use: analysis of a free-text response collected through a self-reported online questionnaire.

BACKGROUND: Cannabis, the most consumed illicit drug globally, has been legal for non-medical use in Canada since 2018. Problematic internet use is considered a behavioral addiction involving excessive online activities (e.g., social media, video watching), which can cause social isolation, family issues, psychological distress, and even suicide ideation. Studies mainly conducted with adolescents indicate a link between cannabis use disorder and problematic internet use. METHODS: This exploratory study with a qualitative component aims to investigate the experiences of adult cannabis users in

A systematic review of nonpharmacological treatment options for skin picking disorder.

Skin picking disorder (SPD) is a well-described neuropsychiatric disorder that causes severe stress and impairment. However, there is no clear protocol for treating patients, and only a relatively small body of literature evaluating treatment approaches. This review aims to summarize and compare recent publications and provide an up-to-date guide of current nonpharmacological treatments for SPD. A literature review was conducted on all nonpharmacological SPD treatment studies published between 2017 and 2023 using PubMed, CINAHL Plus with Full Text (EBSCO) and Scopus. Earworms as 'mental habits': Involuntary musical imagery is associated with a wide range of habitual behaviors.

Earworms have been associated with symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), indicating a link to neurocognitive systems involved in the regulation of habitual behavior. The present study investigated whether earworms are associated with a range of habits and compulsions, and with a broader tendency to behave in habitual, routine ways in everyday life. Participants (N = 883) completed an online survey measuring frequency of earworms, other habits and compulsions, everyday habitual tendencies and anxiety. Habitual tendencies in everyday life positively predicted earworm frequency, contro

Loneliness as a motivating factor for maladaptive daydreaming among Vietnamese adolescents: the role of online novel reading.

In today's world, where digital consumption is prevalent, it's crucial to reflect on the psychological effects of online behaviors. This research focuses on exploring how abnormal online novel reading (AONR) mediates the connection between feelings of loneliness and maladaptive daydreaming (MD). A survey was conducted on 388 subjects who engage in online novel reading. The results revealed that AONR serves as a partial mediator between loneliness and MD. The findings suggest that loneliness may compel individuals to seek solace in the virtual narratives of online novels, which in turn may cata

Unraveling the core symptoms across distinct trajectories of problematic Internet use among 27,577 adolescents: Cross-lagged panel network analyses.

Problematic Internet Use (PIU) often begins in adolescence and develops along diverse trajectories. Understanding the interaction between PIU symptoms and identifying the core PIU symptoms that drive distinct trajectories among adolescents are crucial. We employed cross-lagged panel network analyses to examine temporal relationships of PIU symptoms among Chinese adolescents across four developmental trajectories over two time points. A total of 27,577 adolescents (Mean age = 13.8, SD = 1.5) participated in this study. Demographic variables and PIU symptoms were collected from December 17 to 26

Pharmacologic Management of Skin-Picking Disorder: An Updated Review.

INTRODUCTION: Skin-picking disorder (SPD), defined as a psychocutaneous condition that involves excessive picking at the skin causing marked impairment in quality of life, is commonly seen in both dermatology and psychiatry. As such, therapeutic intervention-both nonpharmacologic and pharmacologic-is essential. Given the rising prevalence of SPD and the tremendous impact it can have on quality of life, an updated review, specifically on pharmacologic options, is very much needed. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this scoping review is to provide a detailed compilation of updated pharmacologic treatments

Transdiagnostic compulsivity is associated with reduced reminder setting, only partially attributable to overconfidence.

In the current study, we explored the behavioural and cognitive correlates of the transdiagnostic trait 'compulsive behaviour and intrusive thought' (CIT) in humans. CIT is associated with impaired metacognition, which in turn has been associated with cognitive offloading behaviours such as external reminder setting that play a key role in fulfilling cognitive goals. In an online study (N=600), we investigated individual differences in compulsivity, metacognition, and external reminder usage. Compulsive individuals had reduced preference for external reminders. This was partially, but not full

Post-COVID gambling habits of adolescents and young adults in Aragon, Spain: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Gambling has become increasingly normalized in Spain, with 49.3% of the population participating and high engagement among youth, particularly online. Despite legal restrictions, some studies have reported that over 20% of adolescents aged 14-19 reported gambling in 2022. These findings raise concerns about gambling disorder, which affects 4.7% of Spanish youth and is linked to other mental health problems. Factors such as advertising and the COVID-19 pandemic may have contributed to this trend. This study, part of the GAMBL-OUT project, examines gambling behaviors among young peop
