Risky online buying-shopping behavior: The role of stress responsivity on the transfer from goal-directed behavior to stimulus-response habits.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: There is a lack of research on the stress-related transfer from goal-directed behavior to stimulus-response habits in (early stages of) online buying-shopping disorder (BSD). This study investigated the Pavlovian-to-instrumental transfer (PIT) effect after reward devaluation (PIT-dev) as indicator of habitual behavior and its modulation by acute stress in individuals with risky (online) buying-shopping (r-BSh). METHODS: Individuals with r-BSh (n = 67) and a control group (n = 67) underwent a PIT paradigm with devaluation procedure. A stress induction/control procedure was

Relationship between Problematic Internet Use and emotional variables in childhood and adolescence: systematic review of longitudinal evidence.

PURPOSE: Problematic Internet Use (PIU) has been associated with emotional difficulties in childhood and adolescence. However, the directionality of this relationship remains unclear due to the lack of terminological consensus and wide variability in prevalence estimates. This systematic review aims to synthesize the longitudinal evidence on the directionality of the relationship between emotional variables (depression, anxiety, emotional dysregulation) and PIU in children and adolescents. METHOD: Following PRISMA guidelines, five databases were consulted (Scopus, Web of Science, PsycNet, Pro

Prevalence and determinants of food addiction among Palestinian university students: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Food addiction (FA) is characterized by an insatiable urge to consume high-calorie, sugary, hyper-palatable foods beyond energy needs. This condition is associated with having obesity, binge eating, and comorbid physical, psychological, and social complications. While FA shares characteristics with other eating disorders, it is still understudied in many populations, especially university students. This study aims to assess the prevalence of FA among Palestinian university students and identify associated nutritional, social, psychological, and lifestyle factors. METHODS: A cross-

Current perspectives on brain circuits involved in food addiction-like behaviors.

There is an emerging view that the increased availability of energy-dense foods in our society is contributing to excessive food consumption which could lead to food addiction-like behavior. Particularly, compulsive eating patterns are predominant in people suffering from eating disorders (binge-eating disorder, bulimia and anorexia nervosa) and obesity. Phenotypically, the behavioral pattern exhibits a close resemblance to individuals suffering from other forms of addiction (drug, sex, gambling). Growing body of evidence in neuroscience research is showing that excessive consumption of energy

Sleep disturbances and behavioral symptoms in pediatric Sotos syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Sotos syndrome (SoS) is a rare overgrowth genetic disease caused by intragenic mutations or microdeletions of the NSD1 gene located on chromosome 5q35. SoS population might present cognitive impairment and a spectrum of behavioral characteristics, with a worse profile in patients with microdeletion. Although patients with SoS are known to have impaired sleep habits, very little data are available. The present study aimed to assess the prevalence of sleep disorders (SDs) in a pediatric cohort of patients with SoS and their correlation with neuropsychiatric profiles. METHODS: We inc

Translational research in punishment learning.

Punishment learning is learning of the causal relationship between responses and their adverse or undesirable consequences. Here, we review our translational approach for understanding whether, when, and how individuals differ in what they learn during punishment, and how these differences in learning may drive persistent poor or maladaptive decisions. We show that individual differences in punishment insensitivity can emerge from differences between individuals in what they learn about punishment (instrumental contingency knowledge), rather than differences in aversive valuation, reward valua

Compulsivity-related behavioral features of problematic usage of the internet: A scoping review of paradigms, progress, and perspectives.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Compulsivity contributes to the development and maintenance of multiple addictive disorders. However, the relationship between compulsivity-related cognitive features and problematic usage of the internet (PUI), an umbrella term for various internet use disorders/interfering behaviors, remains largely unclear, partly due to the multidimensional nature of compulsivity. This scoping review utilized a four-domain framework of compulsivity to consider this topic and aimed to summarize available evidence on compulsivity-related neuropsychological characteristics in PUI based on

Confidence biases in problem gambling.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Subjective confidence plays an important role in guiding behaviour, especially when objective feedback is unavailable. Systematic misjudgements in confidence can foster maladaptive behaviours and have been linked to various psychiatric disorders. In this study, we adopted a transdiagnostic approach to examine confidence biases in problem gamblers across three levels: local decision confidence, global task performance confidence, and overall self-esteem. The importance of taking a transdiagnostic perspective is increasingly recognised, as it captures the dimensional nature

Psychosocial risk and protective factors for youth problem behavior are associated with food addiction in the Generation Z.

OBJECTIVE: Food Addiction (FA) and other well-known risk behavior as substance misuse tend to co-occur and may share similar risk and protective factors. The aim of this study was to assess the association between the diagnosis/severity of FA and psychosocial domains typically related to risk behavior syndrome in a large, nationally representative community sample of Generation Z underage Italian students. METHOD: The sample consisted of 8,755 students (3,623 from middle schools, 5,132 from high schools). A short version of the Yale Food Addiction Scale 2.0 was administered to evaluate FA. Ri
