Associations Between Gender Dysphoria, Eating Disorders, and Mental Health Diagnoses Among Adolescents.

PURPOSE: Transgender adolescents and adolescents with eating disorders (EDs) are known to have increased mental health comorbidity; however, little is understood about how gender dysphoria (GD), disordered eating and mental health disorders relate to each other. The purpose of this study was to examine associations between GD, ED, and mental health diagnoses among adolescents. METHODS: Data were extracted from the electronic health records of 57,353 patients aged 9-18 seen at a single pediatric health system between 2009 and 2022. Adjusted logistic regression models tested for associations be

Neurodivergence and Threat: A Case Study on the Risk of Violent Fixations in Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Mass shootings have increasingly captured public attention in recent decades, prompting closer examination of the mental health of those responsible. This scrutiny often focuses on individuals with neurodevelopmental disorders, such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD). While epidemiological evidence is mixed on whether these individuals are more likely to commit acts of violence than the general public, certain behavioral characteristics may make them more vulnerable to extremist ideations. This case study focuses on a 17-year-old male patient who initially presented with suicidal behavior, late

Patterns of gender identity data within electronic health record databases can be used as a tool for identifying and estimating the prevalence of gender-expansive people.

OBJECTIVE: Electronic health records (EHRs) within the United States increasingly include sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI) fields. We assess how well SOGI fields, along with International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, 10th Revision (ICD-10) codes and medication records, identify gender-expansive patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study used a data set of all patients that had in-person inpatient or outpatient encounters at an academic medical center in a rural state between December 1, 2018 and February 17, 2022. Chart review was performed

Prevalence of diagnosed eating disorders in US transgender adults and youth in insurance claims.

OBJECTIVE: We estimated the prevalence of diagnosed eating disorders, overall and by select demographics, among commercially insured individuals identified as transgender in a national claims database. METHODS: From the 2018 IBM® MarketScan® Commercial Database, there were 10,415 people identifiable as transgender based on International Classification of Disease (ICD-10) codes and procedure codes, specific to gender-affirming care, from inpatient and outpatient claims. Eating disorders were identified from ICD-10 codes and included anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder, eat

Mental health in transgender individuals: a systematic review.

Several lines of evidence indicate the prevalence of mental health disorders in Transgender (TG) individuals is higher than that of cisgender individuals or the general population. In this systematic review, we aim to propose a summary of some of the most significant research investigating mental health disorders' prevalence among this population. We performed a double-blind systematic review using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses reporting (PRISMA) on PUBMED/MEDLINE and SCOPUS, specifically using peer-reviewed articles examining the mental health status o

DSM-5-TR: Rationale, Process, and Overview of Changes.

The DSM-5 text revision (DSM-5-TR) is the first published revision of the DSM-5 since its publication in 2013. Like the previous text revision (DSM-IV-TR), the main goal of the DSM-5-TR is to comprehensively update the descriptive text accompanying each DSM disorder on the basis of reviews of the literature over the past 10 years. In contrast to the DSM-IV-TR, in which updates were confined almost exclusively to the text, the DSM-5-TR includes many other changes and enhancements of interest to practicing clinicians, such as the addition of diagnostic categories (prolonged grief disorder, stimu

Validating Data-Driven Methods for Identifying Transgender Individuals in the Veterans Health Administration of the US Department of Veterans Affairs.

We sought to operationalize and validate data-driven approaches for identifying transgender individuals in the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) of the US Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) through a retrospective analysis using VA administrative data from 2006-2018. Besides diagnoses of gender identity disorder (GID), a combination of non-GID data elements was used to identify potentially transgender veterans, including 1) an International Classification of Diseases (Ninth or Tenth Revision) code of endocrine disorder, unspecified or not otherwise specified; 2) receipt of sex hormones not

[Approach to the causes of discharge and health needs of transgender people through the National Hospital Discharge Survey in Spain during the period 2001 to 2013].

OBJECTIVE: The health of transgender people is a little studied topic and hospital records can be an opportunity to make an approach. The aim of this study was to describe the cause for admission and the associated comorbidities of transgender people in Spain between 2001 and 2013. Validation of the exercise and eating disorder questionnaire in males with and without eating disorders.

OBJECTIVE: The need to consider gender when studying exercise in eating disorder (ED) has been underscored. The study aimed to test the psychometric properties and factor structure of the exercise and eating disorder (EED) questionnaire for males with and without ED, to highlight gender differences, and to explore issues relevant for a male version of the EED questionnaire. METHOD: This cross sectional study included 258 male participants: 55 ED patients (inpatients and outpatients) and 203 student controls. The patient group consisted of 54.5% (n = 30) with AN, 18.2% (n = 10) with BN, 27.2%

Patients with irritable bowel syndrome-diarrhea have lower disease-specific quality of life than irritable bowel syndrome-constipation.

AIM: To determine effect of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) subtype on IBS-specific quality of life (QOL) questionnaire and its subscales. METHODS: We studied IBS patients visiting our functional gastroenterology disorder clinic at a tertiary care center of Unites States. IBS and IBS subtype were diagnosed using Rome-III questionnaire. QOL was assessed using IBS-QOL questionnaire. IBS-QOL assesses quality of life along eight subscales: dysphoria, interference with activities, body image, health worry, food avoidance, social reactions, sexual health, and effect on relationships. IBS-QOL and its

The impact of client sexual orientation and gender on clinical judgments and diagnosis of borderline personality disorder.

Concerns have been raised that individuals who are having difficulty coming out as gay or bisexual may be misdiagnosed with borderline personality disorder. In this analogue study, 141 psychologists evaluated a hypothetical client with problems that resembled borderline symptoms but were also consistent with a sexual identity crisis. Client descriptions varied by sexual orientation and gender. Results revealed an effect of sexual orientation for male clients, but not female clients. Male clients whom therapists perceived likely to be gay or bisexual, and male clients with partners of unspecifi

Effect of patient sex, clinician sex, and sex role on the diagnosis of Antisocial Personality Disorder: models of underpathologizing and overpathologizing biases.

This study examined the influence of patient sex and clinician sex and sex role for a case, meeting minimum diagnostic criteria for Antisocial Personality Disorder, in which patient sex was varied. The purpose was to provide an in-depth evaluation of the process by which patient sex and characteristics of clinicians may contribute to bias in personality disorder diagnoses. Psychologists (N = 167) read two cases, including the target case, and provided symptom ratings and diagnoses. A sex-unspecified condition served as a baseline to assess for over- and underpathologizing bias, and diagnoses b
