Predicting Oral HIV Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis Efficacy in Cisgender Women Across Pregnancy and Postpartum.

Cisgender women face an increased risk of HIV acquisition during pregnancy and postpartum. Oral pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) with emtricitabine and tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (F/TDF) is recommended in pregnancy despite limited published pharmacokinetic (PK) and efficacy data during pregnancy. Altered PK during pregnancy may reduce prophylactic efficacy and necessitate higher adherence. Tenofovir alafenamide (TAF) is a newer tenofovir prodrug with higher tenofovir diphosphate (TFV-DP) exposure in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs), but the prophylactic efficacy of F/TAF across dif

Cutaneous papillomaviruses infection rewires fatty-acid metabolism.

BACKGROUND: Cutaneous warts are common HPV-induced lesions with limited treatments for recalcitrant cases. Fatty-acid metabolism (FAM) maintains epidermal homeostasis, but whether papillomavirus infection actively suppresses FAM programs and whether restoring FAM-related regulators can modulate keratinocyte dysfunction remain unclear. METHODS: We established a murine MmuPV1 wart model and performed bulk RNA-seq. FAM-related DEGs were identified via network analysis and machine learning. Immune infiltration was assessed by CIBERSORT. In vitro validation used HPV16 E6/E7-transfected HaCaT cells

Case Report: Teprotumumab treatment in an HIV-infected patient with refractory thyroid eye disease: clinical and quantitative MRI evidence.

BACKGROUND: People living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) may develop Graves' disease as a delayed autoimmune manifestation of immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome following antiretroviral therapy. Thyroid eye disease (TED) is uncommon in this setting. Teprotumumab targets the insulin-like growth factor-1 receptor (IGF-1R) and inhibits orbital fibroblast activation; however, its use in patients with HIV-associated TED has not previously been reported. CASE PRESENTATION: A 37-year-old man with HIV infection developed Graves' hyperthyroidism and active moderate-to-severe TED five

Anti-HIV Serological Profiles and Concordance of Chemiluminescent Immunoassay Screening With a Supplemental Rapid Test Among Blood Donors in Côte d'Ivoire.

INTRODUCTION: HIV screening by chemiluminescent immunoassay (CLIA) enables the simultaneous detection of anti-human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-1/2 antibodies (Abs) and the p24 antigen (Ag), ensuring high sensitivity and specificity. Viral typing is essential for the clinical follow-up of seropositive blood donors. This study aimed to identify anti-HIV Ab profiles among blood donors who tested positive by CLIA and to assess the concordance between CLIA screening and supplemental rapid testing. METHODS: A descriptive study was conducted at the Regional Blood Transfusion Center of Bouaké from

Carotid artery stiffness and cognitive performance among men living with and without HIV.

Carotid artery stiffness has been associated with cognitive performance; however, the association among men with HIV (MWH) remains unclear. We examined the relationship between carotid artery distensibility and cognitive performance in the Multicenter AIDS Cohort Study (MACS). We analyzed data from 717 men (459 MWH and 258 men without HIV [MWoH]) who underwent carotid artery ultrasound and completed neuropsychological testing at least twice. Carotid artery distensibility was divided into tertiles. Cognitive outcomes included psychomotor speed (Trail Making Test A), executive function (Trail Ma

Investigating strategies to enhance access to HIV services among children in Malawi: A multifaceted research approach, study protocol.

BACKGROUND: Despite major progress in HIV epidemic control, children in sub-Saharan Africa, particularly in Malawi, continue to experience poorer HIV outcomes than adults. While Malawi has made substantial progress toward the UNAIDS 95-95-95 targets, only 55% of children living with HIV are virally suppressed compared with 87% of adults. This study aims to identify and develop strategies to improve children`s access to HIV services in Malawi. METHODS: Guided by the Socio-Ecological Model and the HIV care cascade framework, this multi-method study comprises four sub-studies: (1) secondary anal

Human papillomavirus (HPV) and HPV vaccine awareness in Indigenous communities in Northwest Territories, Canada.

OBJECTIVES: Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a common sexually transmitted infection linked to several cancers, including cervical cancer, which ranks fourth in cancer incidence and mortality among women globally. Despite its significance, awareness of HPV and the HPV vaccine remains limited across many populations. This project assessed HPV and HPV vaccine awareness among Indigenous adults in Northwest Territories communities in Canada and explored factors influencing HPV vaccine utilization; such data have never been available or explored. METHODS: Using a community-based participatory researc

Repeat At-Home Saliva Collection to Measure Cortisol Awakening Response (CAR): Protocol Feasibility Study Among Black Women With Histories of Abuse.

BACKGROUND: Emerging evidence supports that women with histories of abuse have heightened stress and immune dysregulation. Few studies have examined the biological plausibility of this association in US Black women-a population disproportionately affected by gender-based violence (GBV), health disparities, and generally underrepresented in research. Biomarkers of stress and immune health remain challenging to study due to barriers in recruitment, retention, and protocol adherence. OBJECTIVE: This study developed and examined the feasibility of an at-home, self-collected, and minimally invasiv

Mechanisms accounting for Allee effects during HIV-1 infection.

The infection of target cells by viruses involves several positive feedback loops. Many viruses increase the likelihood of infecting a target cell by increasing the local multiplicity of infection (MOI), and viruses like HIV-1 increase the availability of target cells by activating quiescent CD4+ cells. Positive feedbacks during viral infection can lead to bistability phenomena, meaning that a stable uninfected steady state co-exists with a stable infected steady state. This could have the consequence that too small viral inocula are unable to infect a host, which is a so-called Allee effect,

Do partnered male aphrodisiac users engage in higher sexual risk behaviors related to sexually transmitted infections than single men? Evidence from a survey conducted in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Drugs meant to help with erectile dysfunction are more often used for fun and to enhance sexual performance. However, the non-medical use of these medications may encourage risky sexual behavior and raise the chances of getting sexually transmitted infections, such as Human Immunodeficiency Virus. In this study, we explore the association between the aphrodisiac use and the risky sexual behavior among men aged 15-49 years in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo. This study is a secondary analysis of data from 654 men aged 15-49 years in Kinshasa, regardless of sexual orientation. The dat

Preventing drug interactions with antiretrovirals in the aging HIV population: focusing on population pharmacokinetic modeling.

INTRODUCTION: As people with HIV live longer given the success of antiretroviral therapy, the population of older individuals with HIV is rapidly expanding, bringing new challenges related to aging, multimorbidity, and polypharmacy. Age-associated physiological changes - including alterations in renal and hepatic function, body composition, plasma protein binding, and gastrointestinal absorption - can substantially influence drug pharmacokinetics (PK). In individuals with HIV, these changes may be further compounded by chronic inflammation, immune activation, and long-term antiretroviral expos
