2D:4D digit ratio and brain volumes in alcohol use disorder.

BACKGROUND: Prenatal androgen exposure organizes the development of the brain with permanent effects on brain structure and function. The second-to-fourth digit length ratio (2D:4D) has been associated with mental illnesses, including addictive disorders, with some studies reporting sex-dependent associations. Preliminary evidence suggests that in healthy male adolescents lower 2D:4D (indicating higher prenatal androgenization) is related to lower volumes of the right anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) which has previously been linked to a higher risk of alcohol use disorder (AUD). We aimed at tr

Adverse Childhood Experiences of Youth in Rural Areas of Delhi: A Cross-sectional Study.

CONTEXT: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) refer to intensive and frequently occurring sources of stress that children may suffer early in life. The behavior adopted by people who faced such experiences can lead to serious preventable problems like substance abuse, mental health issues, eating disorders, unsafe sexual practices, and chronic diseases. World Mental Health Surveys, conducted in 21 countries, revealed that 30% of adult mental illnesses are attributed to ACE. The present study aimed to identify ACEs of youth in the rural area of Delhi. AIMS: To assess the magnitude of the probl

Cognitive behavioral therapy-based interventions for problematic pornography use: a scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: Problematic pornography use (PPU) has attracted increasing interest due to its reported associations with psychological distress, sexual difficulties, and relationship concerns in a subset of users. Several psychotherapeutic interventions have been proposed. Still, there is no widely accepted, evidence-based, standardized protocol for its treatment. OBJECTIVE: This scoping review aimed to identify and synthesize intervention protocols based on cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for the treatment of PPU, published between 2019 and 2024. METHODS: A systematic search was conducted

Mapping behavioural mechanisms linking childhood maltreatment, cognition, impulsivity, and suicidality in bipolar disorder: A network approach.

Childhood maltreatment (CM) has been consistently associated with increased risk and poorer outcomes in bipolar disorder (BD). However, the behavioural and cognitive mechanisms linking CM and suicidality remain poorly understood, limiting the development of targeted preventive interventions. We estimated a regularised partial correlation network to explore the interplay between CM subtypes (emotional, physical, or sexual abuse; emotional and physical neglect), cognitive domains (attention/processing speed, executive function/working memory, socio-emotional cognition, decision-making), impulsiv

Prevalence of adverse childhood experiences among high school students: a cross-sectional analysis of 16 jurisdictions in the USA.

BACKGROUND: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are preventable, potentially traumatic events occurring before age 18, and are linked to numerous negative outcomes throughout life. Recent national studies report that ACEs are common among US high school students, but the prevalence of ACEs by state and local jurisdiction is unknown. The study objective was to estimate the prevalence of individual and cumulative ACEs among high school students in 16 US jurisdictions. METHODS: Using 2023 Youth Risk Behavior Survey data, we estimated the self-reported prevalence of eight individual (emotional,

Earlier Prostatic Artery Embolization for Progressive Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia: A Biological Rationale and Hypothesis for Disease Interception.

Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a heterogeneous progressive disease that can culminate in bladder outlet obstruction, acute urinary retention (AUR), and potentially irreversible bladder dysfunction. Current treatment pathways appropriately prioritize symptom burden, patient preference, and established complications; however, symptom severity correlates imperfectly with obstruction and detrusor reserve. Prostatic artery embolization (PAE) improves lower urinary tract symptoms with a lower immediate procedural and sexual adverse-event burden than transurethral surgery but produces less com

Sexual function in women with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome: the role of psychological factors.

BACKGROUND: Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is the most common endocrine disorder in women of fertile age. It is associated with somatic and psychological comorbidities and lower sexual function. AIM: To study which psychosocial factors predict sexual dysfunction, and dyadic and solitary sexual desire in women with PCOS. METHODS: This is an observational case control study amongst healthy heterosexual women with (n = 68) and without PCOS (n = 67), aged 18-40 years, in a steady relationship. All participants filled out questionnaires on sexuality (sexual function, sexual distress, sexual des

Sex as Self-Injury Among Youth Clinic Visitors in Sweden.

Earlier research has found that sex could be used as a means of self-injury with functions comparable to other self-injurious behaviors such as cutting or burning the skin. A suggested definition for sex as self-injury (SASI) is "a pattern of seeking sexual situations involving psychological or physical harm to themselves." The research concerning SASI is sparse and the behavior is still in need of further understanding. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of SASI among visitors to youth clinics in Sweden and the associations with sexual risk-taking, drug and alcohol consum

Sexual Risk Behaviors and Current Substance Use Among Sexually Active Adolescents in the United States: Differences by Sex, Race, and Sexual Identity.

Substance use and high-risk sexual behaviors remain pressing public health challenges among U.S. adolescents, with tobacco, alcohol, and marijuana being the most used substances. While previous research has shown an association between substance use and risky sexual behavior, there is limited data on how these associations vary based on demographic modifiers such as race, sex, and sexual identity among sexually active adolescents. This study explores the association between current substance use (cigarettes, e-cigarettes, alcohol, and marijuana) and high-risk sexual behaviors (having multiple

Workplace Sexual Harassment and the Risk of Chronic Disease in a Prospective Cohort Study.

In a sample of university employees, longitudinal data were examined to test a biopsychosocial model of whether exposure to workplace sexual harassment increases hazard for chronic disease, in the context of other known biological, psychological, and social risk factors for chronic disease. Proportional hazards multiple regression was used to predict incidence of first chronic disease across 23 years of follow-up based on experience of sexual harassment. Out of a sample of N = 525, 288 incident diagnoses were observed. Effects of harassment, drinking behavior, cigarette use, depressive symptom

Protective Factors Against Violence and Substance Use in Adolescents: A Latent Class Analysis.

PURPOSE: Substance use (SU) and violence drive a significant proportion of adolescent mortality. Identifying shared protective factors is crucial. We aimed to characterize adolescent SU and violence typologies and examine associations with protective factors. METHODS: Using cross-sectional surveys from 17 high schools, we assessed individual (psychological empowerment and future orientation), interpersonal (social support and school connectedness), and environmental (Child Opportunity Index) protective factors. We used latent class analysis to identify risk profiles across multiple forms of S

Prevalence and factors associated with substance use among adolescent girls and young women working in artisanal and small-scale gold mining communities of Uganda: a cross-sectional exploratory study.

BACKGROUND: Artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) employs many adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) who face distinct vulnerabilities. Work and leisure activities in ASGM often involve substance use. This increases the health, financial, and social burdens of AGYW. This paper examines the prevalence of and factors associated with substance use among AGYW in ASGM in Uganda. METHODS: This paper uses a cross-sectional survey of 810 females aged 15–24 years who work in the ASGM sector in Central and Eastern Uganda. To assess the prevalence and determinants of substance use, we used frequ

Development and validation of a precision treatment rules for first-line antipsychotic recommendations in first episode psychosis jointly incorporating effectiveness, side effects and patient preferences.

Selecting first-line antipsychotic medication for first episode of psychosis patients is a very challenging task requiring the clinicians to empirically weight multiple criteria. Precision treatment rules developed using health records offer a pragmatic approach to support clinicians' treatment selection, however, they don't incorporate side effects and patient preferences. We used Electronic Health Records from Early Intervention for Psychosis services in South London and the Maudsley NHS Trust and followed the RECORD and TRIPOD + AI guidelines. Precision treatment rules were developed using

Associations between family and peer self-harm exposure and self-harm behaviors among young adults: Findings from the SSNE study.

BACKGROUND: Self-harm among young adults is a significant public health concern influenced by psychosocial, demographic, and environmental factors. Although prior research has emphasized social contagion and mental health risk, less is known about how exposure to self-harm within family and peer networks relates to variation in self-harm behaviors. This study examined cross-sectional associations among social exposure to self-harm, mental health indicators, and sociodemographic characteristics using data from the Spatial Social Network and Environmental Exposure (SSNE) study. METHODS: Data fr

Challenging Case: "Digital Addiction" in a Neurodivergent Adolescent.

Adam is a 15-year-old boy who was born prematurely, with prenatal substance exposure, and was diagnosed in early childhood with combined-type attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder and oppositional defiant disorder. He was not found to meet criteria for fetal alcohol spectrum disorder. Despite treatment with stimulant medications and other adjunctive medications, Adam experienced ongoing difficulties with impulse control, sleep, and aggression. Adam was introduced to digital devices at an early age, resulting in unfiltered, poorly supervised, and prolonged screen exposure.Over time, Adam's d

Treating Behavioral Addictions With Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality: Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: The use of augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) to address addictive behaviors such as substance use disorders and gambling disorders has been growing. However, little has been done to explore the use of AR and VR in the treatment of other behavioral addictions. OBJECTIVE: This scoping review aims to provide an overview of existing literature on AR and VR interventions for behavioral addictions. Specifically, the research questions are as follows: (1) What behavioral addictions or behavioral harms are being treated using AR and/or VR? (2) What AR and/or VR treatment int

Prevalence of elevated mental health symptoms, hazardous alcohol and other drug use, and their co-occurrence across sexual and gender identity in a national probability sample.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined heterogeneity in the prevalence estimates of mental health, alcohol, and drug use outcomes across cisgender heterosexual subgroups and sexual and gender minority subgroups using a national probability sample. METHOD: We conducted a secondary data analysis with the U.S. Transgender Population Health Survey (n = 1,436). We calculated prevalence estimates of serious psychological distress, suicidal ideation and attempts, elevated posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms, hazardous alcohol use, hazardous drug use, and co-occurring outcomes across subgroups using cutof

Approach to the patient: cases of hormonal management in older transgender and gender diverse adults.

As the general population continues to shift to an older demographic, more transgender and gender diverse (TGD) adults will seek out endocrinologists and other healthcare providers to help them navigate both initiation and continuation of gender-affirming hormone therapy concurrent with the potential development of age-associated diseases. The purpose of this Approach to the Patient article is a case-based approach to management considerations in older TGD adults in the settings of neurocognitive disorder, increased cardiovascular disease risk, prostate cancer, bone health, and menopause. Menopausal Considerations in Transgender and Gender-Diverse Individuals.

Assessing and treating menopause in transgender and gender diverse (TGD) individuals is of increasing interest to clinicians providing gender-affirming care. There currently exists a small body of literature that describes cardiovascular, bone health, neurocognitive, and other outcomes in the TGD population who experience loss of endogenous sex hormone production, whether through gender-affirming hormone therapy, surgical gonadectomy, or natural aging. However, the literature is currently insufficient to provide clear evidence-based guidance for the medical management of menopause in TGD indiv
