Estimation of Prevention-Effective CAB-LA Concentrations Among Men Who Have Sex With Men (MSM) and Transgender Women (TGW) in HPTN 083.

BACKGROUND: The HIV Prevention Trials Network (HPTN) 083 Trial demonstrated the superiority of long-acting, injectable cabotegravir (CAB) over daily oral tenofovir disoproxil fumarate/emtricitabine (TDF/FTC) for HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis among cisgender men (MSM) and transgender women (TGW) who have sex with men. Plasma CAB concentrations associated with HIV protection in humans are unknown. METHODS: We conducted a nested case-control study to investigate the association between plasma CAB concentrations and HIV risk. Plasma CAB concentrations were estimated for participants with confirmed

Impact of reduced chlamydia testing on STI testing and provider preferences in the Netherlands: an experimental vignette study.

OBJECTIVES: The restrictive chlamydia testing guidelines for asymptomatic individuals at Dutch sexual health centres (SHCs) since January 2025 may influence perceptions and attitudes towards testing for sexually transmitted infections (STIs). This study aimed to assess the potential impact of this guideline change on STI testing preferences among young people and to examine determinants and underlying motivations of these preferences. METHODS: Heterosexuals aged 16-34 in the Netherlands, recruited via social media and SHCs, completed an online survey (April-June 2024). STI testing preferences

Estimating the HIV PrEP care continuum among gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men in Amsterdam and the Netherlands.

OBJECTIVE: HIV-preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP) implementation can be examined by the PrEP care continuum that defines steps toward effective HIV prevention. We examined the PrEP continuum among gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM) in the Netherlands and in Amsterdam. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study combining multiple data sources. METHODS: The following steps of the PrEP care continuum were estimated for 2023: GBMSM not living with HIV, accessed sexual health services, PrEP-eligible, PrEP-intention, current PrEP use, and PrEP continuation. The number of GBMSM progressing th

Mobile enhanced prevention support for people leaving jail: examining smartphone app integration with peer mentors and contingency management for a population at risk of HIV.

The period following community reentry from incarceration is associated with elevated risks of drug overdose, HIV transmission, and other harms. The importance of leveraging mobile technology to facilitate service access has grown with smartphone use. Peer navigation has shown efficacy for individuals at risk of HIV transmission. We conducted in-depth qualitative interviews with 19 individuals assigned male at birth (all who have sex with men) who were participants in a randomized controlled trial to test an intervention combining the three above components. Three peer mentors were also interv

Co-creation and evaluation of people-centered mobile health messages to promote PrEP adherence among GBMSM in China: a feasibility study.

BACKGROUND: Co-creation has the potential to generate people-centered mobile health (mHealth) interventions to improve PrEP adherence. This study generated people-centered mHealth messages with Chinese gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM) via a structured co-creation approach, and evaluated the messages quality, and assessed the feasibility of the co-creation approach. METHODS: A three-step co-creation framework was implemented with 19 GBMSM PrEP users and six HIV researchers between 2021 and 2023. Messages were assessed via 10-point scales, and the degree of usefulness b

Preventing the heterosexual epidemic: Responses and contingencies during the HIV/AIDS crisis in Denmark, 1981-1997.

HIV/AIDS posed a significant health threat in Denmark from the early 1980s until the end of the 1990s, claiming approximately 2,000 lives. Gay men, hemophiliacs, drug users, sex workers and migrants were overwhelmingly among the victims of the disease. They also constituted the groups most associated with it. This led to a raised level of public attention to these groups; a heightened visibility that ambiguously resulted both in improving the life conditions of some while also increasing the stigma of others. This article analyses the roles of different cross-sector actors in shaping the respo

Associations of Sex Work Modality Classifications with Condom and Substance Use Behaviors Among Women Who Exchange Sex for Drugs or Money - Four Metropolitan U.S. Cities, 2016.

Women who exchange sex for drugs or money (WES) are disproportionately affected by HIV, particularly in the United States. We used latent class analysis to identify distinct groups, or classes, of sex work modalities (ways in which women find their exchange sex partners) and assess differences between class membership and behaviors associated with HIV transmission. Data are from the 2016 National HIV Behavioral Surveillance (NHBS) cycle focused on heterosexuals at increased risk for HIV infection (HET). Four cities participated in a pilot study exploring a subset of WES. All participants (n =

Trends in the Incidence of HPV-Associated Anal Cancer by Risk Group, 1990-2019: A Population-Based Cohort Study in British Columbia, Canada.

BACKGROUND: Anal squamous cell carcinoma caused by human papillomavirus disproportionately affects people living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV; PLWH), particularly gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBM). New guidelines recommend screening and treatment of precancerous lesions. We aimed to estimate anal cancer incidence by HIV status, sex, and GBM status in British Columbia, Canada. METHODS: Using administrative health databases, we assessed anal cancer stratified by HIV status, sex, and sexual orientation from 1990 to 2019. A phenotypic algorithm was used to classif

Violence Exposure, Affect and ART Use Among Young Black and Latinx Men Who have Sex with Men: An Ecological Momentary Assessment Analysis.

Black and Latinx gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (BLMSM) face disproportionate HIV burdens due to structural racism and homonegativity which manifest as multiple forms of violence that disrupt consistent HIV care engagement. This study examined pathways linking interpersonal, community and structural violence exposure to antiretroviral therapy (ART) use among young adult BLMSM and explored the mediating roles of substance use and negative affect. Participants (N = 41; ages 18-34) living with HIV in New York City completed a 90-day ecological momentary assessment (EMA) between

Preferences for emerging modalities of HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis among sexual and gender diverse populations in Malaysia: implications for person-centred HIV prevention.

BACKGROUND: In Malaysia, HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) uptake remains low. Emerging formulations (e.g. injectable, long-acting oral, and event-driven PrEP) may help overcome barriers such as daily pill burden and adherence. This study examined PrEP preferences among men who have sex with men (MSM), transgender women, and gender-diverse individuals, and assessed how socio-demographic, sexual history, and substance use influence these preferences. METHODS: We conducted the PrEP APPEAL survey among 663 individuals in Malaysia from 10 May 2022 to 30 November 2022. Multivariable binary and m

A transmission relationship investigation of HIV infection through male-to-male sex among a case of left-behind children with heterosexual orientation in Zhejiang Province of China.

OBJECTIVE: This study seeks to trace the source of HIV infection in a male adolescent (P1) with a newly recognized heterosexual orientation in Zhejiang Province on August 23, 2019. METHODS: An in-depth epidemiological interview was conducted with P1 and all sexual partners. For HIV-infected partners, sequential partner tracing was performed until no new HIV cases were detected. The survey assessed high-risk sexual behavior, HIV testing and treatment history, and demographic details. Serum samples were collected for HIV antibody testing, and plasma samples from HIV-positive individuals were ta

Leveraging mHealth interventions to reduce sex- and drug-related risk behaviors among chemsex-involved men who have sex with men: evidence from a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Chemsex, a form of sexualized drug use, is a growing public health concern among men who have sex with men (MSM) in Malaysia. It is associated with an increased likelihood of HIV transmission and other adverse health outcomes, such as overdose. Although harm-reduction services are proven to be efficacious in mitigating these outcomes, they often remain inaccessible because of stigma, criminalization, and limited availability of the service. This study examines the barriers MSM face in such services and explores how a mobile smartphone app with tailored features could help overcome

Interest in Long-Acting PrEP by Methamphetamine Use Among Men Who Have Sex with Men in Four Western US Cities.

Methamphetamine use is a driver of HIV among men who have sex with men (MSM) and is associated with suboptimal adherence to daily, oral PrEP. Long-acting PrEP may be a promising alternative. We analyzed data from the 2023 National HIV Behavioral Surveillance survey in four western cities to assess interest in long-acting PrEP among HIV-negative MSM participants. Of 1,450 participants, 7% used methamphetamine in the past 12 months. Two-thirds were interested in long-acting PrEP (68%); with no difference in interest (χ2 = 1.4, p = 0.24) or prior PrEP use (χ2 = 0.56, p = 0.46) by methamphetamine

Psychosocial and behavioral correlates of Mpox infection among men who have sex with men in China: a multicenter cross-sectional study with implications for health equity.

BACKGROUND: Mpox (formerly known as monkeypox) has disproportionately affected men who have sex with men (MSM), yet evidence from East Asia on psychosocial and behavioral correlates is limited. We examined factors associated with Mpox infection among MSM in China, with attention to health equity considerations. METHODS: A multi-center cross-sectional survey was conducted in six Chinese cities (November 2023-March 2024). Eligible MSM (≥ 18 years; male-to-male sexual contact in the past six months) completed an anonymous questionnaire capturing sociodemographics, Human Immunodeficiency Virus (H

Circumcision for HIV Prevention in Men Who Have Sex With Men: An Updated Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Circumcision reduces HIV risk for men who have sex with women, but for men who have sex with men (MSM), prior meta-analyses were ambiguous because of inconsistent, highly confounded data suggesting regional differences. This has left the weight of evidence unclear even after a small 2024 trial in primarily insertive MSM (PI-MSM) in China showed protection. Any protection would be for PI-MSM and could have substantial impact given high incidence. SETTING: No restrictions. METHODS: We performed an updated literature search on the association of male circumcision with HIV among MSM.
