Stage-specific transcriptional atlas of goose satellite cells uncovers sex-biased molecular dynamics associated with embryonic skeletal muscle development.

INTRODUCTION: Sexual dimorphism in avian skeletal muscle is established during embryogenesis, but the stage-resolved transcriptional programs governing this process in geese remain largely unexplored. METHODS: To construct a stage-specific transcriptional atlas of muscle satellite cells (SMSCs), we performed histological examination and RNA sequencing of PAX7+ SMSCs isolated from male and female Zhedong White goose embryos across four developmental stages (E13, E15, E18, and E23). Quantitative PCR was used to validate selected differentially expressed genes (DEGs). RESULTS: Although myofiber

MaltEms-MaltOBP9 axis mediates sexually dimorphic olfactory behavior in Monochamus alternatus via recognition of pheromone 2-methoxy-4-vinylphenol.

The olfactory system is essential for insect survival and behavior, with odorant-binding proteins (OBPs) playing a key role by binding and transporting chemical signals to olfactory receptors. Although MaltOBP9 from Monochamus alternatus, a primary vector of pine wilt disease, has been linked to olfactory functions in M. alternatus, its regulatory mechanisms and specific roles are not well understood. In this study, we show that MaltOBP9 is highly expressed in the antennae of both male and female adults after sexual maturation. Using fluorescence spectroscopy, molecular docking, and site-direc

When sex matters early: clues from pediatric onset multiple sclerosis.

INTRODUCTION: Pediatric-onset multiple sclerosis (POMS) provides a unique developmental model to investigate when sex differences first emerge in multiple sclerosis (MS). As disease onset occurs during immune, endocrine, and neural maturation, POMS offers an opportunity to understand how puberty may shape disease susceptibility and subsequent trajectories. AREAS COVERED: This review synthesizes evidence from epidemiological, clinical, neuroimaging, biomarker, and therapeutic studies across prepubertal, peripubertal, and post-pubertal stages. Articles published between 2000 and 2025 were ident

Sexual dimorphism in adult zebrafish marrows regulates blood cell composition and immune response.

Hematopoiesis sustains lifelong blood production and immunity and is strongly influenced by biological sex. Males and females differ in their hematopoietic composition and susceptibility to infection and hematologic disease. Because current models cannot readily disentangle the independent contributions of sex chromosomes versus hormones, the mechanisms underlying sexual dimorphism remain poorly understood. Zebrafish have proven to be a powerful, translatable system for studying hematopoiesis, and offer a unique opportunity to isolate hormonal contributions due to their absence of sex chromoso

Regional similarity to male-typical brain architecture links childhood ADHD to neurophysiological aging in later adulthood.

Identifying early life biomarkers of suboptimal aging trajectories could help design interventions to delay or even prevent the onset of pathological conditions in older adulthood. To address this issue, we capitalize on evidence that the prevalence rates and presentation of neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative conditions tend to vary between males and females, thereby raising the possibility that processes involved in sexual differentiation could help connect brain maturation and aging outcomes. Here, we focus on attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), a neurodevelopmental condit

Metabolomic Profiling identifies Biomarkers of Sexual Dimorphism in the Brain and Gonads of Matured Eleutheronema tetradactylum.

Elucidating the metabolic basis of sexual dimorphism is critical for the effective management of sequential hermaphrodites in aquaculture. The four-finger threadfin (Eleutheronema tetradactylum) is a commercially significant protandrous species; however, the metabolic landscapes characterizing its sexual maturity remain unexplored. In this study, we established a foundational metabolomic baseline by profiling brain and gonad tissues from sexually mature males and females using UHPLC-Q-TOF-MS. Multivariate statistical analysis revealed distinct tissue-specific dimorphism, with gonadal tissues e

Odorant receptor Or117 detects camphor to induce floral seeking by the mosquito Aedes aegypti.

Female mosquitoes display distinct, staged, and dynamic resource-seeking behaviors to sustain energy and reproductive demands. Teneral females are attracted to floral odors due to innate energy requirements. During maturation, females develop the competence to take a blood meal, a process expedited following mating and linked to a shift to vertebrate host cue attraction. The change in resource-seeking behaviors is correlated with an overall increase in abundance of chemosensory receptors, with select odorant receptor genes, including odorant receptor Or117, displaying an opposite dynamic expre

Epigenetic mechanisms affected by stress during adolescence and the increased risk for depression later in life: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Stressful life events (SLE) are associated with an increased likelihood of developing depression. However, the underlying mechanisms and the long-lasting consequences of SLE exposure during adolescence, a critical period for physical, sexual, and behavioural maturation, are largely unknown. Recent studies suggest that they might be mediated by aberrant epigenetic mechanisms, such as alterations in DNA methylation, histone modifications and the expression of microRNAs. This systematic review aims at investigating the epigenetic markers affected by SLE during adolescence and their (c

Night-restricted feeding preserves the ovarian circadian rhythm of IL-17 and promotes follicular development in prepubertal and pubertal rabbits.

BACKGROUND: Irregular sleep and eating patterns in modern lifestyles may disrupt reproductive rhythms, thereby impairing reproductive function in adult women. In livestock production, improper management may disturb livestock eating and activity rhythms, thereby reducing reproductive performance. However, whether disruptions in feeding times during the growth stage affect pubertal follicular development via the ovarian circadian rhythm regulation remains unclear. RESULTS: In this study, rabbits were assigned to daytime feeding (DF) and night-restricted feeding (NRF) groups. At day 84, ovarian

Short-term Treatment with Metformin During Puberty Mitigates Metabolic Dysfunctions Programmed by Neonatal Overfeeding in Male Rats.

OBJECTIVE: To address the major public health problems of increased body weight and obesity, causing conditions such as hypertension and diabetes. Early obesity in childhood and adolescence has more severe long-term health consequences. The Developmental Origins of Health and Disease (DOHaD) concept examines how early overfeeding and other factors affect health throughout life. This study hypothesized that a short-term metformin treatment during puberty could reduce metabolic dysfunction caused by neonatal overfeeding. We investigated whether the same intervention would have a similar effect o

COMPREHENSIVE ANALYSIS OF MURINE GAIT DURING SKELETAL MATURATION.

Gait is a highly coordinated motor behavior that integrates musculoskeletal and neuromotor control. Analysis of gait parameters is widely used in murine studies as functional biomarkers of locomotor development and disease progression. However, there has yet to be a comprehensive characterization of how gait matures during the rapid growth preceding skeletal maturity, an age range often used in preclinical gait studies. We analyzed gait longitudinally in healthy C57BL/6J mice from 6 to 16 weeks of age, timed to the onsets of sexual and skeletal maturity, respectively. More than 30 gait paramet

Impacts of prenatal resiquimod exposure during late gestation on rat offspring development and behavior.

Maternal stress during pregnancy causes changes in circulating glucocorticoids and inflammatory cytokines that can alter fetal development. Prior studies have shown that prenatal dexamethasone impacts fetal brain development, increases anxiety-like behavior, and dysregulates neuroendocrine and autonomic function in adult rat offspring. Resiquimod (RQ) activates toll-like receptor 7, causing immune activation. The current study investigated the impact of RQ-induced maternal immune activation during late gestation on rat offspring development and behavior. Pregnant dams were weighed daily. On ge

Characterization of Forkhead Box Transcription Factor (foxl) in Sex Differentiation of Chinese Tongue Sole (Cynoglossus semilaevis).

Chinese tongue sole (Cynoglossus semilaevis) is an important mariculture product in northern China, exhibiting significant sexual dimorphism: females grow 2-4 times faster than males and ultimately attain much greater body weights. As a well-known transcription factor crucial for regulating sex differentiation, foxl2 has been characterized in various mammals. Herein, we identified and characterized three foxl genes, foxl1, foxl2a and foxl2l. Three foxl genes exhibited a gonad-biased expression pattern, where foxl2a showed higher expression in ovary than in testis, while foxl1 and foxl2l exhibi

The role of high BMI from infancy forward on clinician-rated pubertal timing in a large US sample.

CONTEXT: High childhood adiposity accelerates pubertal timing, particularly in females. However, it is unclear when in childhood intervention is most important. OBJECTIVE: To disentangle the associations of body mass index (BMI) during infancy, early, mid-, and late childhood with pubertal timing. METHODS: We studied 132 452 (46.6% female) full-term singletons born in Kaiser Permanente Northern California affiliated facilities between January 1, 2003 and December 31, 2011. A mediation analysis was used to disentangle how BMI during infancy (<2 years), early (2-<5 years), mid- (5-<9 years), a

Hypothalamic endoplasmic reticulum stress drives pubertal precocity due to early-onset obesity in female rodents.

Early-onset obesity, especially in girls, is frequently associated with advanced puberty; a phenomenon bound to increased risk of long-term complications. Hypothalamic endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress has been implicated in the pathophysiology of obesity and its comorbidities. However, its contribution to pubertal disorders associated with obesity remains unexplored. We report herein that central ER stress drives obesity-induced precocious female puberty. Hypothalamic expression of key ER stress markers was blunted during normal pubertal transition and altered in female rats with early-onset

A case of osteoporotic fracture leading to diagnosis of Klinefelter syndrome in a 76-year-old man.

Klinefelter syndrome (KS) is the most prevalent sex chromosome disorder in men but often remains clinically silent until later life. We describe an elderly man whose evaluation for a rib fracture uncovered the diagnosis. A 76-year-old male presented after a low-impact fracture during a coughing episode. Clinical history revealed delayed sexual maturation, small testes, infertility, and mild gynecomastia. Hormonal testing demonstrated markedly reduced testosterone with elevated luteinizing and follicle-stimulating hormones, suggesting primary testicular failure. Karyotype analysis confirmed 47,

Effects of exposure to lisdexamfetamine dimesylate on hepatic parameters of pubertal rats.

Lisdexamfetamine dimesylate (LDX) is a psychostimulant, that has been widely recommended in recent years for the treatment of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. The present study aims to evaluate the effects of LDX administration on the hepatic morphophysiology of pubertal Wistar rats, since the liver plays a central role in systemic metabolism. Male Wistar rats were randomly distributed into two experimental groups: LDX group (LDX) - received 11.3 mg/kg/day of LDX diluted in tap water; and the Control group (C) - received tap water only. Animals were treated by gavage during puberty, f

When Lifelong Anosmia Reveals Hypogonadism: A Case of Kallmann Syndrome with Primary Amenorrhea.

BACKGROUND: Kallmann syndrome (KS) is a rare genetic disorder characterized by hypogonadotropic hypogonadism and anosmia. It is often underdiagnosed in females due to subtle clinical presentation. This can lead to delays in accurate diagnosis and proper long-term management, particularly in women presenting with amenorrhea and uterine hypoplasia. CASE ILLUSTRATION: A 25-year-old nulligravid woman presented with lifelong absence of spontaneous menstruation, anosmia, and partial pubertal development. She was initially misdiagnosed with secondary amenorrhea after a positive progesterone withdraw

Postnatal particulate matter exposure alters developmental milestones and brain gene expression in apoE transgenic mice in a sex- and genotype-dependent manner.

Air pollution, with particulate matter (PM) as one of its most critical environmental contaminants, represents a major global health threat and a leading cause of premature mortality. PM can reach the central nervous system (CNS) and has been implicated in both neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative disorders. Individual susceptibility to PM-induced neurotoxicity is shaped by genetic background. Apolipoprotein E (APOE), the major CNS apolipoprotein, plays a key role in brain homeostasis and neurodevelopment, and its isoforms may differentially modulate vulnerability to environmental insults.
