Plasma proteome demonstrates sex-specific associations with mental health risks in adolescents.

Adolescence is a critical developmental period marked by significant physiological, psychological, and behavioural changes, many of which differ between the sexes. We aimed to investigate sex-specific associations between the plasma proteome and questionnaire-based mental health measures in adolescents. Liquid chromatography - tandem mass spectrometry proteomic analysis was used to measure the plasma proteome abundances in 197 adolescents (11-16 years old) from the WALNUTs cohort. Baseline analysis of sexual dimorphism revealed 76 proteins significantly differentially abundant between sexes, w

Safety Concerns, Mechanistic Pathways, and Knowledge Gaps in the Clinical Use of Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors.

Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are widely prescribed for the management of depressive and anxiety disorders and represent one of the most significant pharmacological advances in psychiatry. SSRIs are effective and better tolerated than older antidepressants; however, long-term safety issues, interactions, and withdrawal effects remain a concern. This review combines data from clinical trials, safety databases, and biological studies to provide a clear overview of the safety of SSRIs. The key risks include gastrointestinal bleeding, sexual dysfunction, hyponatremia, serotonin s

Sexual interactions and their effect on positive and negative emotions in social anxiety disorder.

Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD) is associated with significant interpersonal difficulties, yet little is known about how individuals with SAD experience sexual interactions. The current study examined the emotional consequences of sexual interactions among individuals with and without SAD, using a 21-day daily diary design. Participants were 108 single young adults (54 with SAD; 54 without), all of whom were not in a romantic relationship. Participants reported daily on their sexual interactions and emotional experiences. We found no significant differences in the number of sexual interactions b

Sexual dysfunction in women with endometriosis in a low-middle-income country.

BACKGROUND: Endometriosis affects up to 10% of reproductive-age women and significantly impairs quality of life including sexual function, intimate relationships, fertility, and psychological wellbeing. While its impact has been extensively studied in Western populations, there is limited Sub-Saharan African data exploring how the disease affects female sexual health and distress. This study aimed to assess sexual function and sexual distress among women with endometriosis at a tertiary hospital in Kenya. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted involving 108 women aged 18 to 49 with co

Developing a persona-driven, mHealth-enabled care model for young men with hypogonadism: a methods-based approach to early risk stratification and prevention.

BACKGROUND: Early-onset hypogonadism is an emerging cardiometabolic risk marker in young men, yet current care pathways remain fragmented and insufficiently tailored to patients' multidimensional needs. Digital health technologies offer an opportunity to support early risk stratification, promote self-management, and facilitate long-term prevention. This study presents a methodological framework combining Blueprint Persona modeling and multidisciplinary co-design to support the development of tailored digital health interventions. OBJECTIVE: To apply a persona-based, co-design methodology to

The relationship between age of autism diagnosis and life satisfaction in adulthood.

This study examined how age of autism diagnosis relates to adult life satisfaction in a sample of 769 self-reporting autistic adults. We analyzed how demographic and clinical variables related to age of diagnosis and then analyzed the relationship between age of diagnosis and scores on four measures of life satisfaction while controlling for variables significantly associated with age of diagnosis. Participants diagnosed in adulthood were older, less likely to have an intellectual disability, more likely to be assigned female at birth, more likely to identify as a sexual minority, and had high

Adolescent-Parent Dyad and Adolescent Eating Disorders: A Standardized Patient Simulation.

Many medical students are uncomfortable with adolescent patients and the associated difficulties of navigating speaking with an adolescent alone while ensuring confidentiality. To address this, students are encouraged to effectively use the home, education and employment, eating, activities, drugs, sexuality, suicide/depression, and safety (HEEADSSS) assessment, which is a history-taking method designed to reveal information about a patient's home life, social life, and self-image. We created this observed structured clinical examination (OSCE) for learners to practice their communication skil

Turning Everything Upside Down: The Impact of Illness on Romantic Relationships-A SEM-Based Actor-Partner Interdependence Model.

Illnesses are often associated with fundamental changes in relationship dynamics. Yet, little is known about how different acute and chronic conditions distinctly impact both partners' well-being. This study analyzed the reciprocal associations between different illnesses on life satisfaction and relationship satisfaction in partnerships. Based on data from the Family Demographic Panel (FReDA), 14,426 people were analyzed in a two-stage analysis process. In the first step, a Welch-ANOVA examined disease-specific differences in life satisfaction as a function of partnership status, focusing on

Gender-specific associations among trauma type, sociodemographic conditions, and posttraumatic stress symptom severity: Evidence from a nationally representative Icelandic sample.

Trauma exposure is associated with a range of adverse mental health and sociodemographic factors. However, gender-specific patterns related to distinct trauma types and social variables remain underexplored. Using cross-sectional data from a nationally representative sample of 1,766 Icelandic adults randomly selected from the national population registry (n = 930 women, n = 836 men, Mage = 49.6 years), we examined posttraumatic stress symptom (PTSS) severity across trauma types and sociodemographic factors, focusing on gender differences. Trauma exposure was assessed using the Life Events Chec

How I do it: Nerve-sparing laparoscopic low anterior resection: Step by step nerve identification and preservation.

Advances in surgical techniques, together with the widespread use of neoadjuvant and adjuvant therapies, have markedly improved disease-free and overall survival in patients with rectal cancer. Nevertheless, urogenital dysfunction remains a significant source of postoperative morbidity, primarily due to the anatomical location of the rectum and its close relationship with the autonomic pelvic nerves. Although the incidence of urological complications has declined to below 10%, sexual dysfunction continues to affect approximately one-quarter of patients. Nerve-sparing total mesorectal excision,

Association between marijuana use and erectile dysfunction in a sample of sexual minority men: a cross-sectional analysis.

BACKGROUND: Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a condition characterized by difficulty in achieving or maintaining an erection, consequently affecting sexual performance. ED is often a symptom of underlying health conditions such as cardiovascular heart disease and can lead to psychological distress. Previous studies show an association between marijuana use and ED through its potential impact on the endocannabinoid pathways. However, few studies have explored this relationship among sexual minority men (SMM). Considering this knowledge gap, this study aims to assess the association between marijuan

Building a Sexual and Reproductive Health Module for Implementation in Early Psychosis Programs: A Co-creation Process: Création d'un module sur la santé sexuelle et reproductive à mettre en œuvre dans les programmes d'intervention précoce en cas de psychose : un processus de création conjointe.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with psychosis are at risk for adverse sexual and reproductive health (SRH) experiences, and for receiving suboptimal SRH care. Early psychosis intervention (EPI) programs offer an opportunity to address SRH early in the illness course, yet SRH is not currently part of routine EPI care. This project sought to develop a SRH module for women, transgender, and gender-diverse individuals for delivery within EPI care. METHODS: To develop the SRH module, an integrated knowledge translation frame was used, informed by a community-based participatory action research approach.

Positive and negative mental health care experiences among transgender and non-binary people in Canada.

Unmet mental health care need among transgender and non-binary (TNB) people is high, largely due to structural barriers to care resulting from stigma. Prior research has employed broad measures of access to general mental health care among TNB people, but to further improve access, it is important to understand the experiences of TNB people with specific types of providers and services. We sought to describe positive and negative TNB-specific experiences of TNB people accessing mental health care in Canada and compare the frequency of TNB-specific experiences across participant demographics, t

On the construction of the intersectional identity of LGBTQ people who stutter.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to explore and describe the processes involved in the construction of the intersectional identity of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer people who stutter (LGBTQ+PWS). The study fills a gap in the literature between research on the social identity of people who stutter (Daniels & Gabel, 2004) and a description of the lived experiences of LGBTQ people who stutter (Daniels, Boyle, & Archer, 2023). METHODS: A hybrid qualitative approach combining Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) and Grounded Theory methodologies (GT) was used incor
