The moderating role of impulsivity in the association between sexual abuse and substance use frequency across countries, gender identities, and sexual orientations.

This study examined how impulsivity moderates the relationship between sexual abuse and substance use frequency in a large international sample. Participants (N = 64,472) completed the Alcohol, Smoking, and Substance Involvement Screening Test (ASSIST-11), the UPPS-P Impulsive Behavior Scale, and sexual abuse measures through the International Sex Survey. Structural equation models tested associations between childhood sexual abuse (CSA), adolescent/adult sexual abuse (AASA), and combined exposure with substance use frequency, and explored moderation by impulsivity across gender identity, sexu

Leveraging machine learning to identify gendered stereotypes and body image concerns on diet and fitness online forums.

The pervasive expectations about ideal body types in Western society can lead to body image concerns, dissatisfaction, and in extreme cases, eating disorders and other psychopathologies related to body image. While previous research has focused on online pro-anorexia communities glorifying the "thin ideal", less attention has been given to the broader spectrum of body image concerns or how emerging disorders like muscle dysmorphia ("bigorexia") present in online platforms. To address this gap, we analyze 46 Reddit forums related to diet, fitness, and mental health. We mapped these communities

Gender identity development in autistic individuals: An interview study.

Autistic individuals report more gender-related questions and gender incongruence compared to non-autistic peers. However, research on gender identity in autistic individuals lacks longitudinal perspectives and underrepresents cisgender males. This study explored how both cisgender autistic individuals and trans and gender-diverse (TGD) autistic individuals experienced their gender identity development in a broad sense. Fifteen autistic adults (aged 27-52) participated in semi-structured interviews. Data were analyzed using a qualitative longitudinal approach combining phenomenological and pro

How the Gender Dimension of One Health Helps Combat Outbreaks of Emerging and Reemerging Zoonotic Diseases: Case Studies.

When outbreaks of emerging and reemerging zoonotic diseases are discussed, little attention is paid to differential gender impacts, or to gender involvement and roles in different settings during the outbreak. Gender roles shape how individuals' interactions with animals, wildlife, other people and the environment, which influences exposure to zoonotic pathogens. For example, in some rural communities, men may face risks of exposure to emerging pathogens during hunting whilst women who primarily take care of domestic animals may face prolonged exposure to other zoonotic diseases. In some setti

Testing the tripartite influence model among Chinese transgender and gender-diverse adults by gender identity.

Transgender and gender-diverse (TGD) people face elevated risks for eating and body image disturbances relative to their cisgender counterparts. The tripartite influence model has been widely validated in general populations; however, there is limited evidence on its applicability among TGD adults. Existing studies have also often aggregated individuals with different gender identities and have been primarily conducted in Western cultural contexts. Accordingly, the suitability of the tripartite influence model in non-Western cultural contexts (e.g., China) remains unknown. To fill these gaps,

Prevalence of elevated mental health symptoms, hazardous alcohol and other drug use, and their co-occurrence across sexual and gender identity in a national probability sample.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined heterogeneity in the prevalence estimates of mental health, alcohol, and drug use outcomes across cisgender heterosexual subgroups and sexual and gender minority subgroups using a national probability sample. METHOD: We conducted a secondary data analysis with the U.S. Transgender Population Health Survey (n = 1,436). We calculated prevalence estimates of serious psychological distress, suicidal ideation and attempts, elevated posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms, hazardous alcohol use, hazardous drug use, and co-occurring outcomes across subgroups using cutof

Approach to the patient: cases of hormonal management in older transgender and gender diverse adults.

As the general population continues to shift to an older demographic, more transgender and gender diverse (TGD) adults will seek out endocrinologists and other healthcare providers to help them navigate both initiation and continuation of gender-affirming hormone therapy concurrent with the potential development of age-associated diseases. The purpose of this Approach to the Patient article is a case-based approach to management considerations in older TGD adults in the settings of neurocognitive disorder, increased cardiovascular disease risk, prostate cancer, bone health, and menopause. Menopausal Considerations in Transgender and Gender-Diverse Individuals.

Assessing and treating menopause in transgender and gender diverse (TGD) individuals is of increasing interest to clinicians providing gender-affirming care. There currently exists a small body of literature that describes cardiovascular, bone health, neurocognitive, and other outcomes in the TGD population who experience loss of endogenous sex hormone production, whether through gender-affirming hormone therapy, surgical gonadectomy, or natural aging. However, the literature is currently insufficient to provide clear evidence-based guidance for the medical management of menopause in TGD indiv

Experiences of autistic transgender and gender diverse adults undergoing gender-affirming hormone therapy and the influence on occupational identity outcomes.

INTRODUCTION: Autistic transgender and gender diverse (TGD) adults often report additional barriers to health-care access and occupational participation. Gender-affirming hormone therapy (GAHT) consists of hormonal medications a person may choose to take to increase alignment of physical features with their gender identity. CONSUMER AND COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT: This research project was conducted in response to patient and clinician feedback; however, no consumers were involved in the setup or analysis of the study. METHODS: Six autistic TGD adults undergoing GAHT at a statewide tertiary gende

Traversing from childhood surgery to adult life: Long-term functional and psychosexual outcomes in males with differences/disorders of sex development.

INTRODUCTION: Long-term outcomes of disorders of sex development (DSD) following masculinizing genitoplasty remain inadequately defined, particularly regarding transition through puberty into adult social, reproductive, and sexual roles. This study aimed to comprehensively evaluate the long-term domains in males with DSD following surgery in childhood. METHODS: After ethical approval, DSD males aged ≥18 years post-genitoplasty were assessed for surgical, hormonal, urinary, sexual, fertility-related, and psychosocial outcomes. Societal Gender Norms and Their Influence on Late Life Cognition.

INTRODUCTION: This study assesses the influence of normative gender effects on cognitive outcomes of cognitively unimpaired older adults. The results help to understand how sex/gender identity operates as a structural determinant of AD outcomes and informs future research that is more inclusive of gender-diverse identities. METHODS: We analyze data from 216 adults aged 65 and older who completed survey questions from the Aging Gender Index (AGI), which pertain to often gendered experiences of American men and women, which relate to education, employment experiences, and relationship character

"Just Listen to Me. Help Me Explore it." An Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis Exploring Experiences of Gender Dysphoria, Identity And Resilience in Autistic Adolescents Assigned Female at Birth.

Much of the current autism and gender literature has been based within a medical deficiency model; where both are seen as deficiencies rather than differences. However, there is currently minimal knowledge about the experiences of being an autistic adolescent who is both assigned female at birth and has gender dysphoria (GD), whilst even less is known about their experiences of social identity, self-concept and resilience. This study aims to explore experiences of GD with a particular focus on identity and resilience to promote parent and healthcare staff understanding; particularly around gen

Prevalence of discrimination experienced by autistic youth as compared to neurotypical youth and youth with other neurodevelopmental diagnoses.

Autistic adults have reported experiencing discrimination across settings. Nonetheless, population-based research examining the prevalence of discrimination against autistic individuals has been more limited. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the prevalence of types of discrimination (i.e., due to race or ethnicity, due to sexual orientation or gender identity, and due to health condition or disability) experienced by autistic youth (n = 2339) compared to youth with other neurodevelopmental diagnoses (i.e. attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, learning disability, and speech or other

Cut from the Same Cloth? Comparing the Sexuality of Male Cross-Dressers and Transfeminine Individuals Through the Conceptual Framework of Autogynephilia.

Autogynephilia is a natal male's propensity to be sexually aroused by the thought or fantasy of being a woman. Both male cross-dressers and transfeminine individuals (a broad range of individuals born male with a feminine gender identity; e.g., trans women) have been shown to be motivated or characterized by autogynephilia. Although there is a lack of research on whether other potentially related aspects of sexuality are comparable between them, the conceptual framework of autogynephilia offers several predictions that can be tested empirically. Following these predictions, the present study e
