Mental health outcomes and suicidality in hospitalized transgender adolescents: A propensity score-matched Cross-sectional analysis of the National inpatient sample 2016-2018.

Transgender adolescents have unique mental health needs. This demographic has increased rates of mood disorders, anxiety, and depression compared to their cisgender peers. Large-scale studies focused on mental health outcomes, including suicidality, in the transgender adolescent population remain unknown. This study tries to fill these gaps in the literature. Data for this study was taken from the National Inpatient Sample 2016-2018. Transgender adolescents were identified using the ICD-10 codes related to transsexualism diagnoses. These individuals were compared to adolescents without transse

Aphallia - congenital absence of the penis: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Aphallia is a rare congenital anomaly often associated with other urogenital anomalies. The management of aphallia cases for both the immediate and long-term treatment of patients with aphallia pose a major dilemma. Patients are at risk for psychosocial and psychosexual challenges throughout life. METHODS: A systematic review was conducted on aphallia cases. We searched online databases until March 2023 for relevant articles and performed according to the PRISMA-P guidelines. RESULTS: Of the 43 articles screened, there were 33 articles included. A total of 41 patients were analyz

Characteristics of a transgender and gender-diverse patient population in Utah: Use of electronic health records to advance clinical and health equity research.

Transgender and gender-diverse (TGD) people, individuals whose gender identity differs from their sex assigned at birth, face unique challenges in accessing gender-affirming care and often experience disparities in a variety of health outcomes. Clinical research on TGD health is limited by a lack of standardization on how to best identify these individuals. The objective of this retrospective cohort analysis was to accurately identify and describe TGD adults and their use of gender-affirming care from 2003-2023 in a healthcare system in Utah, United States. Long-term outcomes in non-CAH 46,XX DSD.

Differences/disorders of sex development (DSD) comprise a large group of rare congenital conditions. 46,XX DSD, excluding congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH), represent only a small number of these diseases. Due to the rarity of non-CAH 46,XX DSD, data on this sex chromosomal aberration were confined to case reports or case series with small numbers of patients. As the literature is still relatively sparse, medical data on the long-term effects of these pathologies remain scarce. In this review, we aim to provide an overview of current data on the long-term follow-up of patients with non-CAH

Metabolic and cardiovascular risks of hormone treatment for transgender individuals.

Identifying metabolic and cardiovascular risks of gender-affirming hormone therapy (GAHT) is challenging due to other confounding variables that affect patient outcomes and the diversity of treatment regimes. Masculinising hormone therapy produces atherogenic lipid profiles, while effects on other metabolic parameters are not consistent. There is insufficient evidence to conclude if cardiovascular disease risk among transmen is increased. The effects of feminising hormone therapy on metabolic parameters do not demonstrate a consistent pattern in the available literature. However, the risk of v

Evaluating the factor structure and measurement invariance of the 20-item short version of the UPPS-P Impulsive Behavior Scale across multiple countries, languages, and gender identities.

The UPPS-P Impulsive Behavior Model and the various psychometric instruments developed and validated based on this model are well established in clinical and research settings. However, evidence regarding the psychometric validity, reliability, and equivalence across multiple countries of residence, languages, or gender identities, including gender-diverse individuals, is lacking to date. Using data from the International Sex Survey (N = 82,243), confirmatory factor analyses and measurement invariance analyses were performed on the preestablished five-factor structure of the 20-item short vers

Sexual Identity Continuity and Change in a U.S. National Probability Sample of Sexual Minority Adults: Associations With Mental Health and Problematic Substance Use.

OBJECTIVE: Sexual minority disparities in behavioral health (e.g., mental health and substance use) are well-established. However, sexual identity is dynamic, and changes are common across the life course (e.g., identifying with a monosexual [lesbian or gay] label and later with a plurisexual [queer, pansexual, etc.] label). This study assessed whether behavioral health risks coincide with sexual identity change among sexual minority people. METHODS: Associations in a 3-year U.S. national probability sample of sexual minority adults were assessed between sexual minority identity change (consi

Role of Gender in Health and Disease: Methods of Reporting and Interactions with Sex and Other Factors.

Sex and gender are distinct terms that must be used correctly. Data regarding sex and gender may be collected using a 2-step method that separates biological sex and self-reported gender identity. The PhenX Toolkit, funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), is one tool that provides investigators with recommended standard data-collection protocols. Another tool is the Diversity Minimal Item Set questionnaire. Importantly, sex and gender interact: for example, pain has both biological aspects (sex differences in electrical, ischemic, thermal, pressure, and muscle pain sensitivity) and

Child Maltreatment, Mental Health Disorders, and Health Risk Behaviors in People With Diverse Gender Identities.

This study examined rates of mental health disorders and health risk behaviors in people with diverse gender identities and associations with five types of child maltreatment. We used data from the Australian Child Maltreatment Study (ACMS), a nationally representative survey of Australian residents aged 16 years and more, which was designed to understand the experience of child maltreatment (physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, neglect, exposure to domestic violence). Mental disorders-major depressive disorder, generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), alcohol use disorder, post-traumatic

Conversion practice recall and mental health symptoms in sexual and gender minority adults in the USA: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Conversion practices are associated with psychological morbidity, yet few studies have evaluated differences between efforts to change gender identity, sexual orientation, or both. We aimed to examine the individual and joint association of conversion practice recall targeted at gender identity or sexual orientation, or both, with current mental health symptoms among sexual and gender minority people. METHODS: This cross-sectional study used data from The PRIDE Study, a US-based, online, prospective cohort study of sexual and gender minority adults who were recruited through socia

Long-term outcomes for women after dilator therapy with or without surgery in the creation of a neovagina.

BACKGROUND: Vaginal aplasia or hypoplasia often requires the creation of a neovagina using vaginal dilation therapy, vaginoplasty surgery, or a combination of both. However, the absence of validated guidelines and the controversy surrounding vaginoplasty surgery have limited our understanding of the long-term outcomes and impact on quality of life and psychosexual functioning for women with a short or absent vagina. This study provides valuable insights into the Australian context, reflecting the treatment approaches and long-term psychosocial outcomes for this patient group. AIM: This study

Self-Reported Multidimensional Gender Identity in Autistic and Non-Autistic Children.

ABSRACT: PURPOSE: The several prior studies assessing gender identity in young autistic individuals mostly included a mix of child and adolescent participants, heavily relied on parent-reported measures, and yielded mixed findings. A single parent-reported item from the Child Behavior Checklist assessing "wish to be of the opposite sex" was employed in most of these studies. Only one prior study focused specifically on children, but that study employed parent-reported measures. METHODS: Using self-reported multidimensional measures, the present study assessed gender identity in autistic and n

Disparities in depression and anxiety at the intersection of race and gender identity in a large community health sample.

BACKGROUND: Persons of color experience are disproportionately impacted by poor mental health compared to White individuals, as are gender diverse populations relative to cisgender individuals. Yet, few studies have assessed differences in common mental health disorders at the intersection of race and gender identity. METHODS: Using health record data from an urban US community health center in Massachusetts that primarily serves LGBTQIA + communities, we organized patients (N = 29,988) into 24 race and gender identity categories, pairing four race groups (White, Black, Asian, and another rac

Discrimination based on gender identity and decision-making regarding HIV/STI-protected sex, a cross-sectional study among trans and non-binary people in Germany.

BACKGROUND: Trans and non-binary people are often discriminated against. Discrimination has a negative impact on health and may affect sexual health and behavior. We explored the relationship between discrimination based on gender identity and the perceived ability to make decisions about their sex life to feel as protected as desired from HIV and sexually transmitted infections (STI) among trans and non-binary people in Germany. Secondarily, we assessed whether feeling unable of making HIV/STI-protected sex decisions was associated with behaviors related to increased HIV/STI risk. METHODS: W

Sampling Sexual and Gender Minority Youth With UnACoRN (Understanding Affirming Communities, Relationships, and Networks): Lessons From a Web-Based Survey.

BACKGROUND: Periodic surveys of sexual and gender minority (SGM) populations are essential for monitoring and investigating health inequities. Recent legislative efforts to ban so-called conversion therapy make it necessary to adapt youth surveys to reach a wider range of SGM populations, including those <18 years of age and those who may not adopt an explicit two-spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (2S/LGBTQ) identity. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to share our experiences in recruiting SGM youth through multiple in-person and online channels and to share lessons learned for future

[Transgender and Gender Dysphoria: Viewpoints on Clinical Care and Psychological Stress].

Gender identity is a topic of growing interest in mental health research. People with non-conforming gender identity are prone to suffer from stigmatization and bullying, and often present with psychiatric issues. Transgender denotes the broad spectrum of individuals who identify differently from their assigned gender. Some transgender people meet the requirements of the "gender dysphoria" (GD) diagnosis in the DSM-5-TR (diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders, fifth edition, text revision). When these individuals seek or undergo a social transition from male to female or female

Considerations and complexities of accurate PTSD assessment among transgender and gender diverse adults.

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) assessment among transgender and gender diverse (TGD) adults is complex because the literature offers little guidance on affirming assessment that accurately captures both trauma- and discrimination-related distress. This study aimed to characterize threats to precise PTSD assessment that arose during the Clinician-Administered PTSD Scale for the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, fifth edition (CAPS-5). Our sample (N = 44) included trans women (38%), trans men (25%), nonbinary people (23%), and other TGD identities (14%). Participants w

Postoperative adverse events following gender-affirming vaginoplasty: an American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program study.

BACKGROUND: As a part of gender-affirming care, many transgender women undergo vaginoplasty surgery, which is increasingly being performed in the United States. There are considerable knowledge gaps about adverse events associated with vaginoplasty as most published articles report single-center results. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to describe severe and overall 30-day adverse events after gender-affirming vaginoplasty using a large multicenter database. STUDY DESIGN: This was a retrospective cohort study of transgender women who underwent vaginoplasty between 2011 and 2019 using the America
