The impact of climatic factors on headache patterns: a 14-year time series analysis of cluster and tension-type headaches in primary care.

BACKGROUND: Weather-related influences on pain and neurological symptoms are widely discussed in biometeorology. However, the long-term impact of climatic variables on primary care headache consultations remains unclear. This study aimed to examine whether climatic variables are associated with consultations for cluster headaches, tension-type headaches (TTH), and unspecified headaches over 14 years. METHODS: Data (2010-2023) were extracted from medical records using International Classification of Primary Care, Second Edition (ICPC-2) codes. Meteorological variables (temperature, rainfall, w

A Scoping Review of Dietary Management for Nondiabetic Gastroparesis: Evidence Limitations and Research Gaps.

BACKGROUND: Dietary management is essential in gastroparesis, but existing guidelines primarily focus on diabetic gastroparesis, highlighting a lack of evidence-based guidelines for patients with nondiabetic gastroparesis, who experience higher malnutrition and mortality rates. Management is complicated by a suggested bidirectional relationship with eating disorders. OBJECTIVE: To investigate evidence on dietary interventions, patterns, and intake in nondiabetic gastroparesis, including effects on symptoms, nutritional outcomes, quality of life (QoL), and their potential role in disordered ea

Pre-diagnostic biomarkers and risk of stress-related disorders: a cohort study based on electronic health records.

BACKGROUND: Stress-related disorders are associated with future somatic health conditions, suggesting these disorders involve systemic mechanisms. Yet, evidence from biomarkers remains fragmented across physiological systems. We investigated whether routinely collected laboratory biomarkers are associated with stress-related disorder risk and analyzed their temporal trends before diagnosis. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study using electronic health records from Central Finland, collected between 2010 and 2023. Our analytical sample included 73,909 individuals: 6,758 cases and

Sustainable eating for a healthy mind: Association between the EAT-Lancet diet and depression subtypes in a Swiss cohort.

BACKGROUND: Higher adherence to healthy dietary patterns appears to play a role in the prevention of Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). However, the association between the EAT-Lancet diet, developed to promote both human health and environmental sustainability, and MDD remains largely unexplored. OBJECTIVE: To explore the association between adherence to the EAT-Lancet diet and MDD subtypes and assess how dietary patterns among individuals with and without MDD align with EAT-Lancet recommendations. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of 3558 adults from the CoLaus|PsyCoLaus cohor

In-hospital Mortality Patterns and Readmissions in Patients With Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease: An Analysis of the Role of Pulmonary Hypertension.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) may be complicated by pulmonary hypertension (PH). We aimed to understand the impact of PH on in-hospital mortality and quantify the 30-day readmission rate among patients with COPD. For this cross-sectional study, we used the Nationwide Readmissions Database from 2017-2020 to identify adults ≥18 years with COPD. Patients were stratified according to PH diagnosis. Baseline characteristics between groups were compared using the Pearson chi-square test and two-sample t-test. Predictors of in-hospital mortality were determined using multivariate logist

Is ageism among prescribers an influential factor in the management of depression in the elderly? A vignette-based study.

BACKGROUND: The decision-making process, from diagnosing depression to treatment proposal, involves many interrelated factors. Patient age has been identified as a factor that influences care proposals. Our aim is to investigate the association between how prescribers perceive ageing and their decision-making when treating depression. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey of 57 physicians was conducted. The questionnaire collected socio-demographic data, and ageing semantic differential (ASD) scale to assess ageism. It also examined the reactions to treatment proposals in a clinical vignette abou

Neuropsychiatric Diagnostic and Treatment Conundrums: Case Study of an Inpatient With a Complex Illness Presenting With Overlapping Features of Frontotemporal and Lewy Body Dementia.

Frontotemporal dementia (FTD) and Lewy body dementia (LBD) are distinct neurodegenerative disorders that rarely co-occur. However, their overlapping features can obscure diagnosis and complicate management. We present the case of a 65-year-old man with a history of alcohol use disorder, diabetes, and blindness who developed acute behavioral changes, catatonia, and fluctuating mental status. He exhibited signs consistent with a behavioral variant FTD, including disinhibition, executive dysfunction, and hypersexuality, as well as features associated with LBD, including visual hallucinations, aut

QTL mapping of starch, protein, and fatty acid traits reveals pleiotropic loci governing rice eating quality in a recombinant inbred lines population.

The circling rat is an autosomal recessive mutant (homozygous ci2/ci2) that displays lateralized circling behaviour, locomotor hyperactivity, ataxia and stereotypic head-movement. These abnormal behaviours occur in phases or bursts either spontaneously or in response to stress. Heterozygous (ci2/+) littermates display normal spontaneous behaviours. We have previously found that ci2/ci2 rats of both genders have a lower tissue content of dopamine in the striatum ipsilateral to the preferred direction of rotation, indicating that the rats turn away from the brain hemisphere with higher striatal

Large-scale multiethnic electronic health record resource for diabetes complications research: the North West London Diabetes Cohort (NWLDC) - cohort profile.

PURPOSE: The North West London Diabetes Cohort is established to provide systematic characterisation of a large diabetes population as a foundation for complications research and prognostic modelling. Many predictive modelling studies neglect the essential descriptive characterisation of underlying cohorts, focusing narrowly on model accuracy. This cohort profile addresses this gap by comprehensively describing the demographic composition, clinical characteristics and complication incidence patterns. The notably diverse, multiethnic population enables examination of ethnic disparities and supp
