Anti-NMDA Receptor Encephalitis Associated With an Ovarian Teratoma Presenting as First-episode Psychosis: A Case Report.

We report an unusual case of a 27-year-old previously healthy female who presented with a 15-day history of psychotic, cognitive, and unspecified somatic symptoms. She was admitted to the psychiatric ward of an early intervention in psychosis team and medicated with aripiprazole. The young age of onset, the rapid onset, the absent history of psychiatric disease, and the persistence of a marked memory deficit after the psychotic symptoms remitted strongly suggested a nonpsychiatric etiology and led us to hypothesize autoimmune encephalitis as the most probable diagnosis. An investigation was ca

Effect of Combination Treatment With Varenicline and Nicotine Patch on Smoking Cessation Among Smokers Who Drink Heavily: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

IMPORTANCE: The concurrent use of both tobacco and alcohol causes substantial disease and early mortality, and smokers who drink heavily tend to be less successful in smoking cessation than smokers who do not. Although varenicline combined with nicotine replacement therapy for smoking cessation has been examined among smokers who do not drink heavily, this combination treatment has not yet been examined among smokers who drink heavily. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether combined treatment with varenicline tartrate and nicotine patch improves continuous abstinence from cigarette smoking among smo

The prevalence of autism spectrum disorder traits and diagnosis in adults and young people with personality disorders: A systematic review.

OBJECTIVES: Autism spectrum disorders and personality disorders are spectrum conditions with shared clinical features. Despite similarities, previous attempts to synthesise literature on co-existing prevalence and shared traits have employed a unidirectional focus, assessing personality characteristics of individuals with an autism spectrum disorder diagnosis. Here, we assess the prevalence of autism spectrum disorder diagnosis and/or traits among persons diagnosed with a personality disorder. METHODS: We systematically reviewed the English-language literature following Preferred Reporting It

Social Capital and Post-traumatic Stress Disorder among Heavy Rainfall and Flood Victims in Japan.

This study examined the relationship between cognitive/structural social capital and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among victims of heavy rain and flood. Participants were individuals aged≥18 years affected by the July 2018 heavy rainfall in the cities of Kurashiki and Soja, Japan, and living in temporary housing. We distributed five copies of a questionnaire to 1,991 households and received responses from 1,927 individuals (907 men, 1,008 women, 12 respondents of unspecified sex) in 1,029 households (51.7%). We estimated odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for associa

Chronic exposure to dim light at night disrupts cell-mediated immune response and decreases longevity in aged female mice.

Circadian rhythms are endogenous biological cycles that regulate physiology and behavior for optimal adaptive function and survival; they are synchronized to precisely 24 hours by daily light exposure. Disruption of the daily light-dark (LD) cycle by exposure to artificial light at night (ALAN) dysregulates core clock genes and biological function. Exposure to ALAN has been associated with increased health risks in humans, and elderly individuals are at elevated risk for poor outcome from disease and often experience elevated exposure to ALAN due to increased care requirements. The role of dis

A revised and extended systematic review and meta-analysis of the relationship between childhood adversity and adult psychiatric disorder.

This study aimed to systematically review the evidence for an association between adversity experienced in childhood (≤ 17 years old), and the diagnosis of psychiatric disorder in adulthood. Electronic databases (Scopus, Medline (for Ovid), EMBASE, and PsychINFO) were searched for peer-reviewed, longitudinal cohort studies examining child or adolescent exposure to adversity, and adult-diagnosed depression, anxiety, psychotic disorder, eating disorders, substance abuse disorder, illness anxiety disorder, somatoform disorder, or personality disorder. A total of 39 manuscripts were retained. Resu

Prevalence and Odds of Anxiety Disorders and Anxiety Symptoms in Children and Adults with Psoriasis: Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

The magnitude of the association between psoriasis and depression has been evaluated, but not that between psoriasis and anxiety. The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to examine the prevalence and odds of anxiety disorders and symptoms in patients with psoriasis. Five medical databases (Cochrane Database, EMBASE, PubMed, PsychINFO, ScienceDirect) were searched for relevant literature. A total of 101 eligible articles were identified. Meta-analysis revealed different prevalence rates depending on the type of anxiety disorder: 15% [95% confidence interval [CI] 9-21] for social

The altruistic elderly, a valuable but unrecognised kidney donor group. A case report of an 85-year-old unspecified kidney donor.

BACKGROUND: Kidney transplantation is the definitive treatment for end stage renal disease (ESRD), offering improved quality of life and survival benefit over remaining on dialysis. There is, however, a prevailing significant mismatch between patients awaiting transplantation and available donor kidneys. Over time, initial stringent donor criteria have broadened and organs from extended criteria donors (ECDs) and older donors are now being accepted for transplantation. The spectrum of living donors has also undergone a change from close family members to an increasingly non-related, non-direct

Treatment indications and potential off-label use of antidepressants among older adults: A population-based descriptive study in Denmark.

OBJECTIVES: Off-label prescriptions of antidepressants may be of special concern in older-adults. We aimed to study the potential off-label use of antidepressants among adults ≥65 years by describing the patterns, trends, and factors associated with missing and unspecified treatment indications. METHODS: We used registry data to describe indications of all antidepressant prescriptions (N = 13.8 million) redeemed by older-adults in 2006-2019. We investigated factors associated with off-label use by considering prescriptions with missing and unspecified indications of the first antidepressant p

The role of compulsive exercise in the relationship between perfectionism and eating disorder pathology in underweight adolescents with eating disorders.

Perfectionism has a strong association with eating disorders. Research in non-clinical adults has suggested that perfectionism has both direct and indirect effects on eating disorder symptoms, and that compulsive exercise is a potential mediator. The aim of this study was to understand whether perfectionism is associated with eating disorder symptoms, both directly and indirectly through compulsive exercise in underweight adolescents with eating disorders. Participants were 149 female adolescents (M = 14.90 years, age range 13-17) with eating disorders from the Helping to Outline Paediatric Ea

Posttraumatic stress disorder, suicide, and unintended overdose death in later life: A national cohort study of veterans aged 50 and older.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Although studies have shown posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) associated with risk of suicide, the relationship in later life, especially for overdose death, remains unclear. Thus, the aim of the current study was to determine associations between PTSD, suicide, and unintended overdose death in mid- to late-life. METHODS: A nationwide cohort study integrating Department of Veterans Affairs' (VA) data, Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services data, and national cause-specific mortality data. Participants were US veterans aged ≥50 years with PTSD diagnoses at baseline

Atypical "accelerated" chronic lymphocytic leukemia with abnormal lymphocyte chromatin clumping, bone involvement, and exceptional response to Imbruvica.

BACKGROUND: The "accelerated" chronic lymphocytic leukemia (aCLL) is a relatively rare form of CLL progression. The expanded proliferation centers in aCLL have been associated with adverse prognostic features and propensity to more aggressive behavior with shorter survival. CASE: An atypical case of aCLL with distinct features is described. A 66-year-old female presented with a marrow replacing process associated with multiple osseous metastases and trivial lymphadenopathy. Bone biopsy revealed an unspecified low-grade B cell lymphoproliferative disorder that demonstrated a suboptimal respons

Three cases of parasomnias similar to sleep terrors occurring during sleep-wake transitions from REM sleep.

UNLABELLED: Sleep terrors are a non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep-related parasomnia characterized by abrupt terror with a frightening scream. However, it remains unknown whether sleep terrors occur only from NREM sleep. We evaluated 3 cases of a sleep terrors-like parasomnia that occurred exclusively during arousals from rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. These parasomnia events occurred at REM sleep-wake transitions, manifesting with screaming or crying, similar to sleep terrors, without alertness or clear orientation. The patients were all young-adult females without notable medical conditio

The Role of Mental Health and Behavioral Disorders in the Development of Temporomandibular Disorder: A SWEREG-TMD Nationwide Case-Control Study.

PURPOSE: There is a well-known association between mental and behavioral disorders (MBD) and temporomandibular disorder (TMD), although the association has not been established in population-based samples. This study aimed to investigate this relationship using national population-based registry data. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This case-control study used prospectively collected data from Swedish national registries to investigate exposure to MBD and the probability of developing TMD in all Swedish citizens with hospital-diagnosed or surgically treated TMD between 1998 and 2016. Clinical outcomes and treatment patterns of older adults with dementia-related psychosis by dementia type in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the incidence of clinical events and treatment patterns among older adults with dementia-related psychosis. Given that dementia-related psychosis comprises various dementia types, this study describes the incidence of clinical events and treatment patterns by dementia type after patients with dementia are diagnosed with psychosis. METHODS: Adults aged ≥ 65 years with dementia and newly diagnosed with psychosis were identified in US Medicare claims during 2013-2018. Baseline characteristics were evaluated at the time of the psychosis diagnosis. After the initi
