BACKGROUND: Congenital syphilis is preventable but has diverse clinical manifestations. Although rhinitis or respiratory symptoms may be among the initial complaints, symptomatic congenital syphilis may already present with overt multisystem disease involving the skin, liver, hematologic system, lungs, skeleton, kidneys, and central nervous system. We report a male infant aged 1 month and 18 days who presented with nasal congestion and rhinorrhea. Initial examination and investigations revealed diffuse desquamation involving the axillae, buttocks, perineum, palms, and soles, together with clus

The month of March is dedicated to Colon Cancer Awareness. Worldwide, colorectal cancer (CRC) incidence has been on the rise. It is currently the third most common cancer in men (746,000 cases, 10.0% of the total) and the second in women (614,000 cases, 9.2% of the total).1 Arecent meta-analysis reported a 61% risk reduction in CRC incidence with colonoscopy.2 Unlike screening programs for breast and prostate cancers, not only has CRC screening reduced mortality from colon cancer and detected early CRC, it has also decreased the incidence of CRC through detection and removal of pre-cancerous l

IMPORTANCE: Syphilis is an infectious disease caused by Treponema pallidum, a gram-negative, spirochete bacterium. Worldwide, an estimated 8 million adults aged 18 to 49 years acquired syphilis in 2022. From 2019 to 2023, US syphilis cases increased by 61% overall, with diagnoses among females increasing by 112% and congenital syphilis cases increasing by 106%.
OBSERVATIONS: Syphilis is transmitted via contact with infectious lesions during vaginal, anal, or oral sex or via the placenta during pregnancy. Individuals at increased risk for syphilis include people with HIV, those engaging in con

BACKGROUND: The neonate and infant periods are critical time windows for diagnosing and treating congenital syphilis (CS) so as to prevent its adverse outcomes. In order to assist pediatricians in achieving early diagnoses and to standardize evaluations and treatments of early CS, this retrospective study described the clinical characteristics, management, and outcomes of infants with early symptomatic CS in Beijing, China, and compared the characteristics of neonatal syphilis with those of post-neonatal syphilis, aiming to enhance the prognosis for affected children.
METHODS: Clinical data,

BACKGROUND: We characterized the rapid increase in syphilis among cisgender women in King County, Washington, and compared it with trends among cisgender men who have sex with men.
METHOD: We used surveillance data from King County, 2007 to 2022, to describe incidence trends stratified by syphilis stage, gender, and gender of sex partners; trends in pregnant cases and congenital syphilis; and trends in rapid plasma reagin titer at diagnosis among late/unknown duration cases. We used joinpoint regression to analyze trends.
RESULTS: Among cisgender women, all-stage syphilis incidence remained

Syphilis remains a common congenital infection over the globe. There has been a tremendous rise in the number of congenital syphilis cases worldwide in the last 20 years. It affects large numbers of pregnant mothers in high burden regions causing a significantly high perinatal mortality and morbidity, which can be easily prevented by early antenatal screening and treatment. Diagnosis of maternal syphilis in pregnancy mainly based on clinical symptoms, serological tests and direct identification of treponemes in clinical samples. However, the diagnosis can be challenging due to the relapsing-re

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: During 2014-2018, reported congenital syphilis (CS) cases in the United States increased 183%, from 462 to 1306 cases. We reviewed infants diagnosed with CS beyond the neonatal period (>28 days) during this time.
METHODS: We reviewed surveillance case report data for infants with CS delivered during 2014-2018 and identified those diagnosed beyond the neonatal period with reported signs or symptoms. We describe these infants and identify possible missed opportunities for earlier diagnoses.
RESULTS: Of the 3834 reported cases of CS delivered during 2014-2018, we iden

A male infant was born by spontaneous delivery on February 7, 2020, with a gestational age of 40 weeks and a birth weight of 4.1 kg. After birth, the infant presented with appearance of skin loss on the bilateral lower limbs, feet, left wrist, face, and lips. Large areas of skin defects, erosion, and exudation were noted on the extensor side of the bilateral lower limbs and feet, and some skin loss with a small amount of exudation was observed on the left wrist, face, and lips, which was accompanied by dorsal hyperextension of the right foot and oral mucosal ulceration (Figure 1). Syphilis is produced by Treponema pallidum, which is acquired mainly through sexual contact and transplacental, but can also be acquired by transfusion of contaminated human blood and direct accidental inoculation. The natural history of the infection is characterized by three symptomatic clinical stages: primary, secondary and tertiary syphilis; these last two are preceded by asymptomatic or latent stages of the disease: early latent syphilis and late latent syphilis. This report presents the epidemiological situation of syphilis in Chile up to 2016, using as a method the descriptive analysis

Neurosyphilis refers to infection of the central nervous system by Treponema pallidum, which may occur at any stage. Neurosyphilis has been categorized in many ways including early and late, asymptomatic versus symptomatic and infectious versus non-infectious. Late neurosyphilis primarily affects the central nervous system parenchyma, and occurs beyond early latent syphilis, years to decades after the initial infection. Associated clinical syndromes include general paresis, tabes dorsalis, vision loss, hearing loss and psychiatric manifestations. Unique algorithms are recommended for HIV-infec

Congenital syphilis is a severe, disabling infection that occurs due to the transmission of Treponema pallidum across the placenta during pregnancy or from contact with an infectious genital lesion during delivery. However, its early diagnosis is often difficult because more than half of the affected infants are asymptomatic, and the signs in symptomatic infants may be subtle and nonspecific. Although its incidence is declining, this long-forgotten disease continues to affect pregnant women, resulting in considerable perinatal morbidity and mortality. We hereby report a case of a 2-month-old i

Congenital syphilis is a potentially serious pathology affecting newborns of infected mothers. Even one case of congenital syphilis is a sentinel public health event, since timely diagnosis and treatment of syphilis infected pregnant woman should prevent transmission almost entirely. Here, we are reporting a case of early symptomatic congenital syphilis presented with severe desquamating papulosquamous lesions over multiple body parts along with erosive lesions around oral cavity and nostrils.

Congenital syphilis is a severe, disabling infection often with grave consequences seen in infants. It occurs due to the transmission of the disease from an infected mother to the unborn infant through the placenta. This long forgotten disease continues to affect pregnant women resulting in perinatal morbidity and mortality. The continuing prevalence of this disease reveals the failure of control measures established for its prevention. We put forth a case of symptomatic congenital syphilis presenting with skeletal manifestations at birth, a rare finding in literature. The report stresses upon

UNLABELLED: STUDY AIMED to assess the epidemiology of sexually transmitted diseases in Poland in 2010.
METHODS: We analyzed data on cases of syphilis, gonorrhoea, NGU, genital herpes and genital warts from the annual reports MZ-14 with individual voivodships.
RESULTS: In 2010, were reported 817 cases of all forms of syphilis--417 fewer then in 2009. There were 572 cases of acquired early syphilis--of which 393 were symptomatic, 227 cases of late syphilis and 18--congenital syphilis. Syphilis in pregnancy and childbirth was found in 22 women. The highest incidence of syphilis--as in pevious y

Congenital syphilis is one of the most well-known congenital infections, yet it remains a worldwide public health problem. Congenital syphilis can involve any organ system and present with various symptoms. However, early diagnosis of congenital syphilis is difficult because more than half of the affected infants are asymptomatic, and the signs in symptomatic infants may be subtle and nonspecific. Here, we report a case of congenital syphilis with only a skin rash, which led to a delay in diagnosis. This case indicates that congenital syphilis should be considered throughout early childhood.

In 2003 year 982 cases of all forms of syphilis were notified in Poland; incidence 2.57 per 100 000 population. The largest number of cases was in mazowieckie (257), dolnoślaskie (124) and slaskie (131) voivodeships. The lowest was registered in kujawsko-pomorskie (13), opolskie (14) and swietokrzyskie (15) voivodeships. There were 446 recognized cases of early symptomatic syphilis and 13 cases of congenital syphilis. Latent syphilis (early and tarda) was diagnosed insufficiently due to decreased number of screening studies. In 2003 year there were 941 932 serum samples tested toward sexually

The continued occurrence of congenital syphilis is an indictment of the inadequate antenatal care services and poor quality of programmes to control sexually transmitted infections. More than 1 million infants are born with congenital syphilis each year. Despite national policies on antenatal testing and the widespread use of antenatal services, syphilis screening is still implemented only sporadically in many countries, leaving the disease undetected and untreated among many pregnant women. The weak organization of services and the costs of screening are the principal obstacles facing program

AIM: To describe a severe form of rapidly progressive HIV-1 infection manifesting in the neonatal period.
METHOD: Prospective cohort study, King Edward VIII Hospital, Durban, South Africa. HIV-1-exposed neonates with hepatosplenomegaly, lymphadenopathy or persistent pneumonia within the first 28 days of life were investigated for perinatal infections. Confirmation of neonatal HIV-1 infection, HIV-1 subtype and clinical outcomes were studied.
RESULTS: Twenty-three (72%) of 32 symptomatic HIV-1-exposed neonates recruited at a mean of 15.2 days were HIV-1-infected. HIV-1 infection was detected
