The month of March is dedicated to Colon Cancer Awareness. Worldwide, colorectal cancer (CRC) incidence has been on the rise. It is currently the third most common cancer in men (746,000 cases, 10.0% of the total) and the second in women (614,000 cases, 9.2% of the total).1 Arecent meta-analysis reported a 61% risk reduction in CRC incidence with colonoscopy.2 Unlike screening programs for breast and prostate cancers, not only has CRC screening reduced mortality from colon cancer and detected early CRC, it has also decreased the incidence of CRC through detection and removal of pre-cancerous l

Sjögren-Larsson syndrome (SLS) is a rare, inherited disorder passed down through families in an autosomal recessive pattern. Its main characteristics are spastic diplegic paralysis, congenital ichthyotic hyperkeratosis, and mild-to-moderate mental retardation. Lack of activity of microsomal fatty aldehyde dehydrogenase (FALDH) or its complete absence is the primary cause of this syndrome, leading to the build-up of fatty aldehydes and fatty alcohols in the body, particularly in the skin. In order to provide the best care for patients, educating them about the management of dry skin and offerin

OBJECTIVE: In animal models and humans, mutations in voltage-dependent calcium channel gamma-2 subunit gene (CACNG2) have been associated with neuronal hyperexcitability, including neuropathic pain. The objective of this study was to determine the allelic and genotypic frequencies of CACNG2 polymorphisms (rs4820242, rs2284015 and rs2284017) and their association with the risk of chronic peripheral neuropathic pain (CPNP) in the Mexican population.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were determined by real-time PCR, and allelic and genotypic frequencies were compared

Angelman syndrome (AS) is an autosomal dominant neurodevelopmental genetic disease with maternal imprint, which is associated with the presence of the abnormal chromosome 15q11-q13, and the loss of maternal specific expression of ubiquitin-protein ligase E3A (UBE3A). The expression levels of UBE3A depend on the parental origin and exhibit tissue specificity. In normal brain tissues, the maternal UBE3A gene is actively expressed, whereas the paternal UBE3A gene is not. In total, ~85% of pediatric patients with AS present with epilepsy within their 3rd year of life. This condition is usually dif

AIM: Mental retardation is a social stigma and children affected by this condition always require love and compassion. Pets have a positive role in human life to relieve stress and anxiety. Pets are therefore considered to be a very important aspect of psychological therapy. Those children who are suffering from mental retardation have to be given regular stress and anxiety-relieving sessions. Hence this study aims to analyze the psychosocial effects of pet dog ownership on mentally challenged children.
METHODOLOGY: A total of 112 children were included in the study and were counseled at the

In this study we focus on the application of standardized tests aimed at evaluating the functional degree of independence in children (client 1, WeeFIM test; and client 2, FIM test) in special education diagnostics. The target group consisted of two clients with a diagnosis of mental functional diversity (n = 2; client 1: mild mental retardation, according to ICD-10: F70, aged 6.5 years; and client 2: moderate mental retardation, according to ICD-10: F71, aged 13.4 years). Special pedagogical intervention was primarily applied to the clients, focusing on identified deficits in the areas of cog

BACKGROUND: Allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA) reflects hypersensitivity and an exaggerated immune response to Aspergillus fumigatus. ABPA typically occurs in individuals with airway diseases such as asthma or cystic fibrosis and is associated with worse outcomes for individuals with these conditions. Each year, physicians across the province of British Columbia submit over 2600 diagnostic testing requests to a centralized location in Vancouver, requiring specimen collection, storage, and shipment from different clinics across the province. Timely and reliable testing of Aspergillu

BACKGROUND: Woodhouse-Sakati syndrome is a rare autosomal recessive disease with endocrine and neuroectodermal aberrations with heterogeneous phenotypes and disease course. The most common phenotypes of the disease are progressive sensorineural hearing loss and alopecia, mild-to-moderate mental retardation and hypogonadism. The disease results from mutations in the DCAF17 gene.
METHOD: Here, we reported a large consanguineous pedigree with multiple affected individuals with Woodhouse-Sakati syndrome phenotypes. Laboratory tests confirmed the endocrine perturbance in affected individuals. To f

Williams Syndrome (WS) is a rare genetic multisystem disorder that occurs because of a deletion of approximately 25 genes in the 7q11.23 chromosome region. This causes dysmorphic facial appearances, multiple congenital cardiovascular defects, delayed motor skills, and abnormalities in connective tissues and the endocrine system. The patients are mostly diagnosed with mild to moderate mental retardation, however, they have a hyper sociable, socially dis-inhibited, and outgoing personality, empathetic behavior, and are highly talkative. Oxytocin (OT), a neuropeptide synthesized at the hypothalam

Mutations in the rho guanine nucleotide exchange factor 9 gene (ARHGEF9) are present in patients with heterogeneous phenotypes including psychomotor developmental delay and variable degrees of epilepsy. Malfunction of collybistin (CB) encoded by ARHGEF9 leading to impaired clustering of gephyrin-dependent glycine receptors and γ-aminobutyric acid type A (GABAα) receptors is a crucial pathogenic mechanism. Here, we report on three patients with epilepsy and mental retardation. We studied three male patients with epilepsy and mild to moderate mental retardation. We conducted targeted panel seque

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: PCDH19 gene, which encodes protocadherin 19, is associated with epilepsy and intellectual disability, mainly in affected females. The clinical manifestations are heterogeneous and the main features include early onset seizure, generalized or focal seizures sensitive to fever, and brief seizures occurring in clusters. The disorders exhibit a unique and unusual X-linked pattern of expression. We aimed to investigate PCDH19 mutations/deletions in patients with epilepsy and describe the clinical/molecular features.
METHODS: PCDH19 gene was analyzed in 35 Turkish female patien

Papillon-Lefëvre syndrome (PLS), classified as ectodermal dysplasia, is an autosomal recessive condition related to the cathepsin C (CTSC) gene mutation. The first clinical symptoms, occurring most commonly between the ages of 1 and 4, are palmoplantar hyperkeratosis and also periodontitis resulting in the loss of most or all teeth in the same sequence in which they erupted. Most often the redness of palms and soles precede the occurrence of keratoderma. Moreover, excessive sweating, moderate mental retardation, the tendency to purulent skin and internal organs infection may occur. Lack of cat

IL-1 induces a significant number of metabolic and hematological changes. In experimental animals, IL-1 treatments cause hypotension due to rapid reduction of systemic blood pressure, reduced vascular resistance, increased heart rate and leukocyte aggregations. IL-1 causes endothelial dysfunction, the triggering factor of which may be of a different nature including pathogen infection. This dysfunction, which includes macrophage intervention and increased protein permeability, can be mediated by several factors including cytokines and arachidonic acid products. These effects are caused by the
