Accurate and efficient data-driven psychiatric assessment using machine learning.

BACKGROUND: Accurate assessment of mental disorders and learning disabilities is essential for timely intervention. Machine learning and feature selection techniques have potential for improving the accuracy and efficiency of mental health assessments. However, limited research has explored the use of large transdiagnostic datasets, as well as the application of these techniques in developing quick, briefer, question-based assessments. This study applies machine learning and feature selection techniques to a large transdiagnostic dataset featuring a high number of assessment items, and to crea

Redesigning trials to be inclusive of people with a learning disability-a practical example.

BACKGROUND: People with a learning disability are frequently excluded from clinical trials, with around two thirds of trials either directly or indirectly excluding this group. This contributes to the shocking health inequalities they experience, with people with a learning disability having higher rates of long-term health conditions and dying on average 20 years younger than the general population. Improving inclusion of under-served groups in trials is a priority area for research funders and regulators. A UK-wide collaboration, 'No Research About Us, Without Us', was formed to explore and

Perceived discrimination and academic procrastination among college students with physical disabilities: the mediating role of feelings of shame and self-handicapping.

BACKGROUND: Students with physical disabilities frequently experience perceived discrimination and often face psychological challenges. However, research on perceived discrimination among students with physical disabilities rarely extends to unfavorable educational outcomes. AIMS: This study aims to explore the association between perceived discrimination and academic procrastination among college students with physical disabilities, with self-handicapping and feelings of shame acting as serial mediators in this association. SAMPLE: 1142 Chinese college students with physical disabilities part

Exploring Nursing Care Coordination Through Swanson's Theory of Caring: Perspectives of Families of Children and Youth With Special Health Care Needs.

PURPOSE OF STUDY: Caring for children and youth with special health care needs can be overwhelming for families. Higher levels of need often require more extensive and coordinated support. The burden of caring for children with complex health care needs can result in negative effects for parents and caregivers over time, thus increasing the risk of poor physical, emotional, and social well-being. Nursing care coordination is an evidence-based intervention that provides families with guidance and support by delivering safe and effective care. The quality of coordination, however, can profoundly

Teachers' use of semiotic resources in the multimodal-multilingual language instruction.

Teaching newly immigrated deaf and hard-of-hearing multimodal-multilingual learners requires the flexible and adapted use of diverse semiotic resources. This study adopts a linguistic ethnography approach to examine how three teachers use various semiotic resources in classrooms where German and German Sign Language (DGS) are taught simultaneously. The study analyzes (a) which semiotic resources are employed and (b) how teachers jointly use them to support students' languages learning. The findings reveal that teachers commonly draw on DGS, written (and spoken) German, and further semiotic res

AI-Based CT Image Recognition With Med-Gemini-3D in the Diagnosis of a Rare Craniofacial Condition: A Catlin Mark Skull.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly applied in diagnostic imaging to enhance pattern recognition and support clinical decision-making. In 2024, Google introduced Med-Gemini-3D, a multimodal platform capable of interpreting 3-dimensional computed tomography scans and generating radiologist-level reports. Although not yet approved for independent clinical use, such systems may assist in identifying rare conditions that are unfamiliar to clinicians. The authors describe a 22-month-old girl who presented with persistent bilateral parietal skull defects and global developmental delay. Comp

Lexical brain responses in 10-year-old children are impaired in dyslexia: An FPVS-EEG study.

The developmental origin of the left occipitotemporal cortex specialization for automatic lexical access from vision remains unclear. Here we investigated cortical specialization for print processing in children with or without dyslexia, focusing on two distinct tuning levels: coarse-grained tuning for letter/symbol discrimination, and fine-grained tuning for word/pseudoword discrimination. 10-year-old typical readers (n = 24) and children with dyslexia (n = 14) were tested with electroencephalography (EEG) and fast periodic visual stimulation (FPVS), viewing streams of stimuli at a relatively

Deciphering multiway multiscale brain network connectivity from birth to 6 months.

Converging evidence suggests that understanding the human brain requires more than just examining pairwise functional brain interactions. The human brain is a complex, nonlinear system, and focusing solely on linear pairwise functional connectivity often overlooks important nonlinear and higher-order interactions. Infancy is a critical period marked by significant brain development that could contribute to future learning, health, and life success. Exploring higher-order functional relationships in the brain can provide insight into brain function and development. To the best of our knowledge,

Cognitive Pathways in Atypical Development: Executive Functions in Children With Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder and Specific Learning Disorders.

Executive functions encompass a range of higher-level cognitive processes that are crucial for attaining goals and adjusting behaviours. They play a significant role in the early predictions of learning outcomes, academic performance, health, well-being, economic status and social interactions in life. The preschool years are an important period for the development of executive functions, during which an early intervention can have notably beneficial effects. The primary aim of this narrative review is to enhance our understanding of certain executive function impairments, their developmental

Neurodiversity in surgery: Embracing cognitive difference in a demanding profession.

BACKGROUND: Neurodiversity encompasses natural variations in cognitive functioning, including autism spectrum disorder, ADHD, and specific learning difficulties. While the concept is increasingly recognised in education and general workplaces, its relevance in medicine and particularly in surgery, remains underexplored. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review in accordance with PRISMA 2020. Searches of PubMed, Embase, Medline, Global Health and PsycINFO databases up to July 2025 identified studies on neurodivergence among surgeons and healthcare professionals. Enhancing Description and Interpretation of Qualitative Interviews With People With Intellectual Disabilities Through Nonverbal and Paraverbal Data Collection and Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Qualitative research involving interviews typically includes transcribing verbal data. However, insights about meaning can also be ascertained from nonverbal and paraverbal communications. Transcribing nonverbal data allows researchers to include and analyze this additional data whilst ensuring participants' confidentiality. METHODS: Six participants with intellectual disabilities were interviewed using Talking Mats as a communication tool to support data collection. The verbal, nonverbal, and paraverbal data were transcribed using a notation system and analysed using triangulatio

The negative impact of neurodevelopmental disorders and multiple co-occurring conditions on academic performance of school-age children and adolescents.

Students with neurodevelopmental disorders (ND) are at risk for academic impairment. However, the pervasive co-occurrence among these conditions has rarely been considered when evaluating this association. This study examined whether intellectual disabilities (ID), communication disorders, autism spectrum disorder (ASD), attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), specific learning disorder (SLD), and motor disorders were related to academic outcomes. Parents and teachers completed standardized screening instruments for mental health problems and learning difficulties. Children who screen
